Congratulations! Your patience paid off.
The hard part is over........relax and wait!

Well, I got thru MEPS on Tuesday. Apparently, MEPS has been shut off for all Officer Candidates until next fiscal year due to the sequestration/furlough. I know what you’re thinking, the sequestration was not supposed to adversely affect the military, right……..WRONG!! The only people that are processing thru MEPS right now are people needing enlistment physicals. So basically, I got there and there was no room at the Inn for me. The Petty Officer that was manning the desk felt pity on me and was able to slide me in due to a no show for the physical. I think it helped that I was prior service and we had been TDY to many of the same locations. I digress…..
So it was game on after that! The MEPS physical was the exact same experience as it was 15 years ago for me. I did the Underwear Olympics and the duck walk just like everyone else did and I was happy to do it! All in all, it wasn’t that bad. This time around the MEPS staff really seemed invested in making sure everyone passed the tests. That is 180 degrees different from my experience 15 years ago. It took around 7 hours from start to finish but I would have gladly doubled that time just to get it over with.
Now I just have to wait for my tests to come back and then it’s on to N3M. The final doc that reviewed my records at MEPS said that everything was good to go and he didn’t see any reason why N3M would have any questions. Hopefully the medically PQ letter, Final Select letter and Comm Doc’s all follow quickly from this point. If not, oh well I know they’re on their way!
Congrats Bam Bam! I am in the early stages of the AEDO/AMDO process. I hope my outcome is as good as yours and I'm staying tuned.
Bam Bam, congrats! My OR informed me today that N3M found my PQ! She told me that all we are waiting on now is my comm/docs!
I guess it's time to buy a uniform to wear for my commissioning. What do you folks recommend? I was thinking kakis but at this point jogging shorts and a wafflehouse cook tank top would work for me, JK! I also thought about just using the NWU for my pinning but Im not sure I'll need those for awhile and due to the furlough (GS civilian job) I've got to be frugal with the fundage. I know I'll need service dress and kakis for DCOIC.
Thoughts?
Apologies for the threadjack, but this seemed the best place to ask about the current MEPS situation. I'd heard the same thing about potentially contracting out the commissioning physicals when we got ready to send me to MEPS, and since I've already had my flight physical, I was hoping they'd just use that (being more stringent, and all). Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to get out of getting herded like cattle in my underwear for my first military experience, but I'm afraid it will hold up my application and we'll miss the next board (not for OCS; I'm waiting for the MSC board so I can hopefully go to ODS in October). Right now, we have my flight physical sitting at BUPERS, and they are waiting for my commissioning physical; my 2807 got sent to MEPS early last week, and we haven't heard anything back yet. I apologize if some of what I'm writing doesn't make sense; I'm not fully clear on my application process, since we had to do things a bit our of order. Does anyone know of any applicants who have gone the route of private/contract physician or an MTF?Good point Sir, It could be isolated to our NRD/MEPS. I was told that no more OC’s could go thru MEPS until next fiscal year due to the sequestration/furlough. There was an email possibly allowing OC’s to go to civilian providers if they could perform the required exams. They needed to be able to fill out the DD2807-1 and DD2808. I thought that this was great news until I started to look for providers that would do the physical. I provided the Doctors with the USMEPCOM guidelines for the physical and they said they could do most of it but not all of it. So I would be going to multiple places to get the physical completed. The doctors also seemed a little uneasy about doing an official government physical and I think they would have been very inflexible if a measurement was close. I think MEPS was the best option because they do this every day and they can complete it all in a one stop shop fashion.
All in all, it was a good experience that I hope I never have to do again!
Key the music……… That sounds like a question for………NavyOffRec!!!! I know that some OC’s have gone the civilian route but I don’t know the specifics. I was told that the only forms N3M “needed” were the DD2807-1 and DD2808. I’m really glad that I was able to go to MEPS because it was a one stop shop.
Good luck and I’m sure NavyOffRec will have some good gouge momentarily!
