If you are talking about OCS your chances are slim, the majority of selections are from fleet applicants (those on AD), and the few that remain (single digits) often have some type of engineering/maintenance background.

FY12 was the first year in many that I remember that they selected double digits (12), usually it is between 4-7

Thanks for the info JackyB and NavyOffRec. I’m looking for some more info concerning reserve positions and locations. My kit is currently at the board and it’s being reviewed. My recruiter said that I should know pretty soon if I am Pro Rec’d because my kit has been at the board for over a month. I’m cautiously optimistic! I received top ratings from my AMDO community interviews (0-5 &0-6). I have an M.B.A., B.S. in Liberal Arts and an A.S. in Avionics. I’ve been in the aircraft maintenance field (fixed wing and rotary) for 13+ years and I’m currently a GS employee in the Aviation Quality Assurance field. I am also an E-7 in the reserves. I’m hoping that I have a competitive kit but I know that there are many highly qualified people out there looking for limited positions. I guess we will see how it turns out!

Your background is much more extensive than any applicant I have seen picked up on the reserve side, generally they have been engineers with at least one post graduate engineering degree, even for Active I think you would have a good shot.

Thank you for the vote of confidence! I hope the board agrees. I know that the military as a whole will have to do far more with far less for the foreseeable future and competition for these positions will become ever greater.

Dang, Chief...you surely look rock solid. If you don't mind my asking, what's your rating? Not that that should be critical to the process with the rest of your portfolio...

Renegade One, I’m an Air Force Reserve Master Sergeant (MSgt). I was an Avionics Technician on active duty on the C-130E/H, U-2S, F-15C/D and the F-22A. When I left active duty, I went back to the good old C-130H as a full time federal technician in the Air Force Reserve. I started as an Avionics Technician and then ultimately became a Quality Assurance inspector. I left the full time Technician slot and became a straight reservist and a GS Aircraft Quality Assurance Specialist with the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) on the mighty C-130J program. Later, I accepted a promotion to work for the US Army as a GS Aircraft Quality Assurance Specialist on the CH-47D/F, OH-58D, AH-64D, UH-72, UH-1 and UH-60A/L. Sorry for the long winded response.

But it was a "good 'un"! Sorry I "assumed Navy" and called you "Chief"...hope you took it as the compliment that was intended. I can't imagine better quals and credentials...best of luck. We'd be very lucky to gain you as an AMDO.

Renegade One, I surely take that as a compliment! My boss is a retired Chief and he contunially tells me that my Air Force pay grade of E-7 is in no way equal to the rank of Chief. Hopefully, I will get the chance to learn from some of the Navy's top notch SNCO corps and one day earn the honorary Chiefs designation. I would like to think that I have helped some very junior officers learn the ropes and I hope to have another SNCO teach me the way the Navy operates. I guess we'll see! Do you happen to know where the possible duty stations are for a new AMDO? Thanks for the comments!

Are you applying reserve? If so you should go to the nearest USN reserve squadron

I understand where he's coming from...but no worries...I think it's friendly "inter-service banter"...nothing more. Every single "Navy Chief", "Air Force Master", "Marine Gunny" or "Army First" I ever worked with or met was top-notch and co-equal in my mind.

Now...you may not (yet) be a "Trusty Shellback"...but that too will surely come! Something else to look forward to...

Thanks for the comments Renegade One and NavyOffRec. Hopefully I'll hear something soon. I was told that there was a chance of commissioning at LT JG. Do you think that this is actually possible or does everybody get the gold bar when they go the DCO route?

You would have signed a sheet saying you were being put in for anything other than ENS, but in most cases DCO = ENS the exception is usually medical or dental

I didn't sign anything like that so I guess 01-E is where I'll start! My package is still at the board so the wait continues.........
