Metal And Wood Do Not Biodegrade in Water

I could understand enlisted men being ignorant and misinformed. Being that naval aviators and flight officers are the smartest people in the Navy. I am surprised to hear you people say wood and metal are biodegradeable in the water. Metal is NON-ORGANIC, it is mined from ore deep within the earth, just like plastic which is a petroleum based product. If plastic is NOT biodegradable and NOT allowed in water, then why the heck is metal and glass allowed to be dumped overboard?

First off I'd be very careful referring to enlisted personnel as "ignorant" I'm not in the Navy yet but even I know that's a quick way to get on people's bad sides. Second wood definitely is biodegradable I'm not sure how much explanation is needed on that, and have you seen what salt water does to metal? Oxidation is a powerful reaction and that metal breaks down pretty well.

What happens to wood and metal when they're in the water for a very long time?!? Does the term artificial reef mean anything to you?!? Oh yea, that's right, you're an environmentalist - so we are "destroying" the ecosystem. Just like all environmentalists, you never stop to think that we are as much a part of this ecosystem as all your precious trees, creatures, etc.

One thing I find so interesting is how someone so passionate about something can be such a dunce when it comes to the objective subject matter. I see this a lot among young activists, especially about the Earth's environment and its concerns. It must have something to do with basing ones thought processes on feelings and on a few snippits from others who base their utterances on feelings. How about growing up, and considering a large body of data objectively, and then taking actions to correct wrongs? Not only will you FEEL really important because you're making noise (as is the case now), you will BE more important because you'll actually be credible.

But what do I know? I'm just a former, ignoramous enlisted puke. And I'm a second lieutenant so that probably compounds my problem.
