I always wondered how many of these little "paper weights" went overboard, back in the day.

If enough saved, a guy could have started a lucrative marine salvage and paperweight business. :D

You mean like this?

Metal And Wood Do Not Biodegrade in Water

I could understand enlisted men being ignorant and misinformed. Being that naval aviators and flight officers are the smartest people in the Navy. I am surprised to hear you people say wood and metal are biodegradeable in the water. Metal is NON-ORGANIC, it is mined from ore deep within the earth, just like plastic which is a petroleum based product. If plastic is NOT biodegradable and NOT allowed in water, then why the heck is metal and glass allowed to be dumped overboard?

First off I'd be very careful referring to enlisted personnel as "ignorant" I'm not in the Navy yet but even I know that's a quick way to get on people's bad sides. Second wood definitely is biodegradable I'm not sure how much explanation is needed on that, and have you seen what salt water does to metal? Oxidation is a powerful reaction and that metal breaks down pretty well.

Really ?? No shit???

Listen, you arrogant, elitist little S.O.B. ... you've just insulted @ 90% of the U.S. Navy and shown that YOU, in fact, are the "ignorant" one and most likely are dumber than whale shit on the bottom of the deep blue sea ... and most likely not fit to shine the shoes of the aforementioned 90%.

If I had any to give, I'd give you richly deserved negative rep. to get you started down the drain. See ya' on that score tomorrow.

You need an immediate attitude check -- or I suggest you go peddle your papers elsewhere before you get banned.

Believe it.

Do you think that your BS in women's studies means shit?

I'll have you know that on earth day I save up all my plastic soda can holders, tie them together, and then throw them in the sea, along with all my other fellow misinformed, ignorant children.

Thanks [Sherlock], without a college grad like you, I would have never known where metal and plastic came from.

Edit: Sorry A4, I'm late to the BBQ, I read that statement and didn't even check to see if anyone else had responded.

As I was.

What happens to wood and metal when they're in the water for a very long time?!? Does the term artificial reef mean anything to you?!? Oh yea, that's right, you're an environmentalist - so we are "destroying" the ecosystem. Just like all environmentalists, you never stop to think that we are as much a part of this ecosystem as all your precious trees, creatures, etc.

Does it have to be from deep within the earth...what about shallow mines?

And you deduced metal is a petroleum based product. WTF?

You lost me there...

You ever seen this picture?...lots of metal there slowly dissolving...yup going back to nature.

Just thought you might like to know that many of the smart officers here were once ignorant enlisted folk. Good thing we pulled our heads out of our asses when we commissioned.

Or how many of these litter the GIUK gap or other chokepoints or likely anywhere a stalk was in progress? Did Al Gore take that into consideration as a contributing factor of rising of the oceans?

No, it's from one of the several strip clubs in Guam :icon_rage

So what you're saying is that it could actually be from whale pee?

One thing I find so interesting is how someone so passionate about something can be such a dunce when it comes to the objective subject matter. I see this a lot among young activists, especially about the Earth's environment and its concerns. It must have something to do with basing ones thought processes on feelings and on a few snippits from others who base their utterances on feelings. How about growing up, and considering a large body of data objectively, and then taking actions to correct wrongs? Not only will you FEEL really important because you're making noise (as is the case now), you will BE more important because you'll actually be credible.

But what do I know? I'm just a former, ignoramous enlisted puke. And I'm a second lieutenant so that probably compounds my problem.
