It once took me over two hours to leave the compound and make it to the Garrisonville gate over by TBS on the day before Thanksgiving. I-95 was like a parking lot until almost Richmond.
Not the party line but when I was a young ensign with boundless energy, I'd drive long distance at night when I went on leave. You can drive through all those parking lots at normal speed during the wee hours and make good time.

Kids: don't do what I did!!

There are plenty of trucks out that late at night but hardly any of them driving side by side and holding up traffic like you see in the daytime.

Been seeing a lot of Younkin signs Arlington and Falls Church. Even in the neighborhoods around CIA. Maybe there's hope.

Terry McAuliffe’s blunder spotlighted the issue of school boards, moving education up to the 2nd most important issue (behind the economy). Regardless of who wins the VA governor’s race, the Republicans now have a plan to retake the suburbs.

Meanwhile, the Democrats in Congress are so fractured that they are having extreme difficulty passing an infrastructure bill - much like 4 years ago when the Republicans could not do anything over the Affordable Care Act despite controlling the House, the Senate and the Presidency.

Looks the McAuliffe’s gaffe proved fatal as Youngkin was able to make inroads into the suburbs while keeping the rural vote at supercharged levels. Likewise, NJ was almost evenly split after President Biden won there by 16 points last year. The county I live in just switched from a liberal school board to a conservative school board following a very heated local election. The Republicans now have a plan for 2022, will be interesting to see how the Democrats plan to counter.

There were 3 other remarkable elections as well on Tuesday.

In The town of Tito Falls, NJ, a 97 year old WW2 vet won re-election as mayor.

Also in NJ, the most powerful member of the NJ state senate appears to have lost re-election to a person who had little more than a Facebook page.

Finally, the mayor of Buffalo, who lost in the Democratic primary to a more progressive candidate, won re-election as a write-in candidate.

The Buffalo thing was amazing to watch. It is astounding to me how many people think “socialism” is sidewalks and fire departments.

But, but, AOC just wanted to tax the rich!!

When is the last time there was such a massive swing in two major state elections just a year after the previous election? I really hope the Dems still refuse to see this as an indictment of the current administration’s policies and goals and keep climbing that mountain. Also hilarious to see the spin they’re putting on it, because, as evidenced below, they clearly knew how important the Virginia election was.

Not anymore. A very recent example, on a trip to Florida at 2am we were completely stopped (accident) just south of 495, between DC and Quantico.

Now, the express lanes extend down almost to Fredericksburg. Thanksgiving trips to NC are almost a complete non-starter in the last 5-8 yrs. I've done 81 just to avoid DC and NOVA, but DC suburbs now extend to Frederick MD (thanks 270)

Be patient, the repubs will squander their gains from this election just as quickly as the dems did with theirs from 2020. Both of them seem to try to push people to vote for the other party.

I was flipping between CNN, MSNBC and Fox on election night. I don't know how anyone can take MSNBC seriously and how some of these people stay on air in beyond me. Blaming the loss on "White suburban backlash" and everything they said was based on race (the commentator was not Caucasian nor were her 2 guests). Totally oblivious to the issues impacting ALL people (kids education, taxes, inflation, COVID mandates).

It was very reminiscent of Republican Senator Murkowsi of Alaska losing her 2010 primary to a Tea Party candidate than winning the Senate in the general as a write-in.

For what it’s worth, I think AOC does want to increase taxes on the rich but you have another section of the Democratic Party that represents some very well to do localities that wants major tax cuts, in particular a repeal of the SALT taxes. Resolving this will be fun to watch. I said years ago that when the Democrats eventually came to power, their coalition would be racked by major differences and have an internal civil war - looks like that is what is happening.

Opinion: Weren’t the Democrats supposed to raise taxes on the rich?

I saw an interesting article a few weeks ago with the punchline of "we're essentially arguing over details and things that really aren't that big of a deal to many people. Things that are important to a small number of people become big issues in lieu of actual big issues." This essentially means that swings like this will continue to happen as there's not an overarching big problem (think great depression and FDR) to really drive long term voting.

BTDT, at exactly the same time of day (night). It's almost surreal to be stuck in a huge traffic jam at that time of night. Like going through the airport in Qatar at 2:00 AM. Why is this place busy?

Funny how none of them mentioned Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor-elect.

I don’t think so. The Dems shifted straight from neutral to fifth gear as soon as they had control over both houses and therefore never got the car headed down the road. The Republicans gained no actual federal legislative power here; as the Veep said herself, this portends the 2022 and 2024 elections.

I also think this shows that Americans aren’t nearly as progressive and woke as the media would lead us to believe. There’s still a strong center, and they will vote in a way they think is best for their family. The wine mom giveth, and the wine mom taketh away.

That's a fair statement.

No big legislation passed. It's still infrastructure week, after week, after week. When it's all or nothing, have to be prepared for nothing.
