funny...I was blessed with a quick tongue (or fingers) as well..nah just being honest, it can get heated when someone questions your desires and personal opinions on what sacrifice is..

Don't get upset at others when they throw some reality in your face.

whats the reality? Assuming I don't already have some kind of idea..

1. Haircuts are NOT a sacrifice.
2. You talk about the spelling of other with a username "eyzondapryz". That says enough.

You will learn how things are around here.

In the grand scheme of life, yes haircuts are not a sacrifice. But, in my life, right now it is some sort of a sacrifice. There is a thing called personal identity and in an ideal world full of wise, humble people placing any sense of self on appearance wouldn't exist...We all care about how we look to some degree...
About my username, of course it's spelt wrong, that's part of the fun..The only thing is says is that I don't take myself too seriously. I can't wait to learn how things are "around here".

well hal pilot, I'm glad your opinion on the matter grants you the authority to pass judgement on me..About sacrifice, maybe you should sacrifice your pride to learn how to spell...

Military: Retired LCDR & P-3 NFO. SWO qualified on CVN-71 (disassociated sea tour); U.S. Southern Command Policy & Strategy, FMS and Pol-Mil; UN Military Observer in the Western Sahara desert. Escorted reflagged Kuwaiti tankers, watched Iran/Iraqi dogfights, did Operation Preying Mantis BDA, and watched the USS Vincennes shoot down an Airbus while attached to VP-46. Played H-3 door gunner (shortage of AWs in helo squadron) for Iraqi oil platform takedowns and OIC of ship boarding/search team while assigned to CVN-71 during and after Desert Storm. Conducted EO recon and targeting over Bosnia while assigned to VP-16. 4 years as an enlisted Army Reserve infantryman/Drill Sergeant.

Seems to me HAL Pilot has the authority to pass judgment on you. With this type of attitude you are going to get eaten up at OCS so chill out a little.

Hal pilot has the authority to do many things, while commanding respect along the way...The bottom line is (as stupid as it may be) cutting my hair to that degree would be a type of sacrifice for me and telling me to "rethink" my aspirations isn't for him to say, especially based upon one response. You can't make stabbing comments at people and except them to sit there quietly and say "thank you sir, may I have another?" (well at least until I get to OCS, I'm sure I will be doing that all the time) But for now, I'm still a civilian, with an opinion and I might as well get it out of my system.

You sure about that?

Small piece of advice, cool it a little. It is only the internet but there are plenty of current and former military officers here that are more than willing to help you out in any way we can. But if you come across here like you have a chip on your shoulder and a bit of an attitude, you will not recieve much help at all. As a matter of fact, you might not be on this board for long.

So take advantage of the resource that this board is and jsut relax a little bit. Some people might rub you the wrong way but that is a fact of life, expecially in the Navy, so just deal with it. Other than that, best of luck to you at OCS.

If I were you I’d look around and learn. There are some great people on this forum; you are just getting some sound advice from HAL. The navy, especially naval aviation, requires a thick skin. If you were offended, then you’d better get used to it! Unless you’re a “tool” it’s all good-natured and said to help. Good luck to you young lady! Go get em!

I totally want to clarify this, I enjoy all the responses I've recieved and my inherant "fiesty-ness" will be chaneled in more appropriate ways soon. Hal didn't say anything I haven't already heard from my crazy military family. Believe it or not I was smiling when I posted my response. Thanks Steve for the friendly smack across the face (honest, that wasn't sarcasm)

Living the dream
Before I was at AOCS, there was a girl who got her whole head shaved. Evidently she wasn't easily identifiable as female and was too scared to speak up. Supposedly they made her wear a wig until her hair grew back.

It's all good advise here. Read, post and learn with enthusiasm even though you might not totally agree or understand.

I swear I remember "haircut day" very clearly (early June 1984). Gunnery Sgt Goforth assisting our class DI Gunnery Sgt Washington (21-84) grabs the shoulder of a gal coming out of the barber shop and paused for a second. He then grunts quietly in frustration as he examines her skull. Then immediately grabs the next candidate and exclaims "You look like a circumcized pe_is". The second candidate using + headwork responds "uh YES SIR". Man O Man did the sparks fly from that point on. Thank god Gysgt Goforth opted not to use that line on the first candidate. Although he did end up naming her "Candidate Beaver"....because after the haircut she was a splitting image of Theodore Cleaver. {Yes my eyeballs were straight ahead. The action occurred about two feet directly in front of me.}

It's amazing we sometimes have the ability to recall the most insignificant things from Navy life. Great times!

Personal identity is something you give up temporary when you show up at OCS - not to be a jerk, but how could you not expect that?
There's a reason that you're called indoctrination candidates your first week of OCS and there's a very, very good reason that everybody gets a haircut, everybody gets the same uniforms, and everybody gets treated the same.
