There will also be a boycott against them if they silence Joe. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. Such is the state of the country and our "if you disagree with me then I will burn your life to the ground" mindset.
I wonder how many outraged people knew who he was before Neil Young made a public stink about his politics.

I know I didn't.

Conversely. I am sure many are asking who is Neil Young…
I don't think they are. I think they read a headline about an anti-vaxxer and decided to cancel their spotify subscriptions to show solidatarity to 'the cause.' I'd wager that the supermajority of people doing this have neither listened to a single Neil Young song nor a single Joe Rogan podcast.

Spotify can hardly silence him. He is free to host his own distribution, and his video content continues to be hosted on his very popular YouTube channel, which has 11.8M subs. All of that said, I'll be surprised if Spotify drops him. The faux outrage contingent has an extremely short attention span.
If he gets banned from Spotify, he'll become a martyr of cancel culture and make bank on his own distribution. Not only that, Spotify will be fighting a lawsuit to pay the full $100M.

In a bout of irony, I see a non-zero amount of social media posts from people who have canceled their spotify subscriptions in order to subscribe to youtube music.

Gotta love old counter culture liberals promoting suppression of free speech. Guess Joni no longer sees both sides of clouds.
Nobody's free speech is being suppressed. Young is putting his money where his mouth is, since I assume Spotify was paying him for playing his music.

Now it's the market's turn to speak. Spotify wants our $$$, they have some decisions to make.

65 percent of Spotify was owned by just six parties: the firm’s co-founders, Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon (30.6 percent of ordinary shares between them); Tencent Holdings Ltd. (9.1 percent); and a run of three asset-management specialists: Baillie Gifford (11.8 percent), Morgan Stanley (7.3 percent), and T.Rowe Price Associates (6.2 percent).

Poor T.Rowe Price Associates, Baille Gifford, Morgan Stanley, and friends. What will they do?

For as much as you glom on to your wife's legal knowledges, you sure don't seem to understand what constitutes the suppression of free speech. ;)

He wasnt making the legal argument that Rogan's first amendment rights are at threat of being infringed upon. But you know that. The point is obvious.. a certain segment of the population would like to suppress the free flow of ideas that they disagree with, and their chosen tactic in this case is the same as it usually is.. try to get someone fired or deplatformed who has an audience. Their hope, no doubt, is that Google and the rest of the tech giants will follow Spotify and kick Joe off their platforms as well. This same thing has already happened several times... Including to our former president.

Thanks, friend. I'll let Wink speak for himself. :D

To paraphrase the situation: Some old man whose name I didn't know before yesterday said some other guy I didn't know existed before yesterday said that he wouldn't vaccinate his children. The platform that hosts him - Spotify - won't ban him, so I'm going to be so mad as to unsubscribe to Spotify. I'll still listen to it, of course, completely oblivious to the fact that ad revenue completely eclipses my measly subscription. I'll also replace Spotify with some other platform that also hosts Joe Rogan and that Spotify executives invest into because that's the way to stick it to the man!

I will post my righteous fury on Twitter and Instagram and Snapchat... "And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious anger; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them!!!"

Excuse me while I go eat my kale salad with my Chipotle bowl while I write a post about anti-corporatism on reddit.

This is the letter that got the ball rolling. It motivated Neil Young to put his money where he beliefs are and pull out from Spotify, thus giving up a bunch of revenue. Money talks and BS walks. Whether folks will turn off their Spotify or not is secondary.

Thanks for the smiley. I chose the words I did to not imply censorship or any constitutional meaning. Yeah, I know the Constitution pretty damn well. That is because I had a good education and still read a good bit. Nothing to do with Mrs Wink's knowledges. Truth be told, the leading sentance was just a vehicle to make the joke about one of Mitchell's most famous songs.

That said, these people are throwing their weight/money around to inhibit another person's speach. If they could, they would see him not online or pubic speaking at all. Not illegal. Just funny seeing old hippies acting like the people they hated so much. I know, not so unusual these days, but always worth noting to remind folks of how fake the loudest people typically are. It is human nature. Some people don't believe in it.

I don't think this was the response @Mirage was hoping for. :D

I was wondering what sort of pretentious, holier than thou, unwilling to address the issue head on response you'd give. My money was on "Yes, I understand that you believe this", but I guess you've still got a few more canned responses before you return to that.
I'm just biting my tongue, in this kinder, gentler AW. Have a wonderful evening! ?
