It's a "Ski Jump". Non-Catapult aircraft carriers use them to help get planes airborne. Must work well, since they are widely used.

There was also an article in March's issue of Proceedings that focused on the Chinese navy buildup.

Read extreamly limited Payload/Fuel for aircraft taking off. And due to the non-existance of any tanker assets other then taking your SU/Mig aircraft and forcing them to do weight restricted buddy tanking duties you get an extreamly limited combat radius.

Ill see if I can find that website that showed the differnces between a Land Based and a Carrier based Flanker due to the neccesary weight penelties. It was pretty sad really.

Enough for them to get to Taiwan no?

This may be a bit off topic but, any speculation as to why they have not gone for it yet?
