Although Officer's Whites are pretty impractical and I can understand how they aren't equivalent with other services' unifroms, I just think there's too much tradition in them. The times when it is appropriate to wear them I usually enjoy, going to cities (umm... NY!) in them is nothing short of amazing, and if nothing else, when I'm in my whites, I've never been mistaken for being in another service ("Hey Sarge! Lemme buy you a drink!" - never gets heard in whites). SDK's are cool, and I can see their function, but as far as replacing whites? I don't think so.

And agreed on Enlisted wearing garrison caps with blues makes them look like the gestapo. Someone at the Academy tried to get 2/C Midshipmen to wear them with our winter blues so as to "distinguish" those who have committed to the Navy from those who haven't. Ghey - glad that seems to have been squashed. (Firsties now wear khakis as uniform of the day).

There's a soon-to-leave British officer at my school and I swear plebe year I saw him wearing British Tropical whites with shirtstays. I've heard the Brits often try to wear their most ridiculous looking uniforms, yea/nay?

My only problem with the trop khakis are the black socks and shoes.....do you think I could get a uniform mod pushed through so that I could wear my Reef flip-flops instead?? They're mo' comfy!

^^^ I remember the British exchangers breaking out their Trop Whites around the Yard, and occasionally sporting the pith helmet. Never saw one with shirt stays; I think they were a little more professional than THAT. A Little.

I've seen an Aussie LO at my building walking around wearing the Love Boat Uni. "Good evening Captain Steubing....where are Gopher and Doc??"

BTW..Fred Grandy, the actor that played Gopher, has a pretty funny AM morning show here in DC.

A buddy of mine did his mid cruise on an Australian ship. They actually had leather sandals to wear with their uniform shorts.

We used to wear wash khakis with shorts and pith helmets on Diego Garcia....just because we could.....

Pith helmets once or twice because they were $1.50 at the store. Then shorts and ball caps.

I happen to have one of those. Squadron decided to go to the Hawkeye/Greyhound ball in Tropical Whites last year. Great fun to see the look on the Commodores face when we all walked in. What? Isn't this a choker equivilent?

The British Officer on board my YP this summer (same as one previously mentioned with shirt-stays) wore sandals with his tropical whites on the bridge quite often. He broke out the knee-hi socks and white shoes though every time we had to render honors or pull into port, so I just assumed he was wearing them "because he could" kind of thing. Maybe they were "reg" - never once would've thought of that... I wonder!
