Is the navigation over the sea requires BS/BA?

You're both youngsters. I'll bet you went through Randolph when I was an instructor there from '93-'96.

    Hangar 24 Lake Havasu AirFest - 4 Nov 17

Yes... yes, they will. And Hangar 24 increased their beer production for that very reason. Oh.. and I think Sue might have some cigars just for you.

    Hangar 24 Lake Havasu AirFest - 4 Nov 17

Where's the Navy presence?? Havasu in November... sponsored by a brewery?... and only one volunteer? WTF?? Are you staying home to plan the squadron Christmas party??

    Funniest Airshow Stories

W You expect the Marines and the Navy to meet, communicate, and agree on a deconfliction plan by having one of them move their traditional date??? Crazy talk. Sorry we didn't get to meet in Miramar. I was just overextended.

    Auto ejection?

It lost out in the budget process to a very modern ILS receiver.

    Auto ejection?

Despite how many time you read about the "hero pilot steering away from the school", it almost always speculation by wishful bystanders, and almost never factual.

    Hangar 24 Lake Havasu AirFest - 4 Nov 17

This show is shaping up nicely. Hangar 24 opened their second location this year at Havasu Airport, so the brewery is literally a couple hundred yards from the public area. World class performers: Kent Pietsch, Vicky Benzing, Jon Melby, Smoke 'n' Thunder Jet Car, and looking like some very...

    Hangar 24 Lake Havasu AirFest - 4 Nov 17

Yes... Hangar 24 has decided to crank up an airshow at a second location: Lake Havasu City Airport, AZ (KHII). Saturday, 4 November 2017. Barely 60 days away. And, yes, it's Navy/Marine/USCG-approved: the DDF 2535 paperwork is done. 8001' x 100', non-towered, FBO has military/gov't...

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

You are correct, Sir. However, the AF needs to be proactive in finding a solution. Get a waiver from Congress, hire them as a GS... something. If I were involved in fixing a problem this significant, I'd be considering some very difficult COAs, and finding a way to make them work. We all...

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

I'd actually consider it if they made the offer attractive. But for me to take an absence from my airline job AND give up my Retiree Pay to come back onto Active Duty means taking about a six-figure pay cut. If they want to entice retirees back, they need to let them keep their Retiree Pay.

NEWS Contract Red Air pilot rescued after ejection

While they are being used in this military-contract role, they are not common in the hands of private individuals in North America. That big engine is thirsty, and it is "a lot of jet" for the average warbird aficionado. For G.A., the most popular jet warbirds are likely the L-39, S.211, T-33...

Actually, I do not believe any of the backstairs are former military WSO's. Mainly engineers that applied. The two guys mentioned are good friends of mine, and excellent pilots. They seem to really love their jobs. It's not for everyone... but if it is a good fit for someone, they'll stay...

If you knew what you do now, what would you tell your pre-flight school school self?

Spend every penny I had on high-performance flight instruction, including jets. Then apply to the ANG unit of my choice. Well... that's what I'd have told myself 1 year after I got my wings. Today... I'd not have changed a thing. Show up ready to work hard... work hard... execute... ...

    Why navy?

It's kind of funny, flyguy... the reactions and responses you got here are the same you got on BaseOps.net. I'd say that... despite some minor differences... there are a lot of similarities between pilots/navs in the USAF and the Navy.

    Military Pilot Retention and Airlines

For those at Miramar, I hear the "GAO Fighter Pilot Manning Working Group" is visiting the base today. If that's accurate, I'd be curious to know how the meeting goes.

    Why navy?

And the rest that favor the Guard are the ones on active duty that really want a Guard job, but still have a service commitment. Actually, I know quite a few airline pilots that have left the Guard, or are really torn to leave, because the airline pay and benefits has gotten so good, and they...

    Why navy?

Whether you imagine it or not doesn't affect the true answer. That's because if they are young punk Guard babies, in unit they actively rushed and wanted to go to, and they're flying the aircraft they want, then why would they want to uproot their lives to go active duty? Makes no sense. And...

    Interservice Transfer for U-2

Call DSN 368-4447 and ask the question. edit: seeing as you're an SNA, there is zero chance the Navy will let you go anytime in the next few years. And the U-2 Program will not consider you until you have at least a tour of flying experience.

The investigation is on-going, and not much coming through Safety channels since the initial report. However, I did some investigating myself and determined it was due to Harrison Ford sitting #1 to depart Taxiway C.

The Four Horsemen? BTW, I remember seeing guys at the bottom of their AF class get picked for F-16's... and the top guy taking a KC-10. That's been a few years, but I'm not surprised to see it happening again.

  36. HuggyU2

USN Splash one SU-22 (merged threads)

Wow. I have no idea why I remember that mishap, but I'm pretty sure I was in pilot training when it happened. That's been quite a while. Wasn't there some sort of issue with the Hornet on wet runways, during the early years of the Hornet, and that's part of the reason he was killed?

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

What can I say in favor of military flying? NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

While I agree the USAF has a culture problem in many areas, I take exception to your comment, based on what I saw, and who my leaders were, during my 28 years of active service. Yes, there are significant difference between our Services: I knew it early on, and I learned a lot more from my...

    Interservice Transfer AF to USN

That's a good question, Flash. Since I was very close to the IST process for the U-2, I did speak regularly to AFPC (equivalent to BUPERS), and know of aircrew going to other aircraft types. Granted, my knowledge of this is limited... but based on what I was privy to, USAF was receptive...

    Interservice Transfer AF to USN

Fixed it. I know a number of inter-service transfers (IST) from Navy/Marines to AF that have done quite well, to include squadron command. One would have been selected for O-6, but retired do to needs of the family. Another was selected for O-6 last year (though he declined, and retired)...

    Military Aircraft at Airshows

OK... I go to a lot of airshows, and have seen some really neat demos. But, holy shit!... the "WOW factor" on this is off the charts: Don't know whose military did it, but good on 'em.
