    All things MV-22 Osprey

So is there any new word if the Navy is actually gonna pick some of these up? According to a pamphlet left in the ready room, their on the hook for several. I think it'd be a fun aircraft to fly. Glad to hear it's doing well.

    Age 65

Just for argument's sake, what would be the reaction if the retirement age had been moved from 60 to 55? I'd imagine there'd be a lot of similar bitching.

The Great Universal Health Care Debate w/Poll (note: it just passed both houses)

Just so you're aware for your example, most insurance companies won't pay if you're not wearing the gear required IN THAT STATE. So, here in Florida I can ride around on my motorcycle without my helmet all day long, which some people may say is stupid, but it's legal, so insurance will cover it...

The Great Universal Health Care Debate w/Poll (note: it just passed both houses)

I've always liked the old adage "you get what you pay for", so it makes me wonder if we don't have to pay for it, will it actually be any good? Methinks no.

    Brown Water Navy career options?

Interesting slide show. I noticed the inclusion of "Aviation Support". Is this foreshadowing of a new HAL squadron?

    Factors for Selection?

Yes, to all of the above, but most of all......timing. Those all play in, but you could be super stud with 0 pinksheets and everyone wants you to go A and if there's only one slot open for B, you're going B.

    Geo Bachelor'ing it Up

So I should finally be finishing the pipeline here in a few weeks and have a question about doing the geo bachelor thing once I PCS out of Milton. Here's the situation. I'm trying to select 53's, Navy side, so if I get it it'll be either Norfolk or Corpus. The rag is in Norfolk. My wife...

    Naval Academy fights booze...

I understand your sarcasm, and I didn't mean "safety net" in the literal sense. I was simply alluding to the fact falling off of the ledge would probably kill a person regardless if they'd be drinking or not. I'll maintain till the day I die that climbing out on a ledge at that height is stupid...

    Naval Academy fights booze...

Which I totally agree with. The point I was trying to make is that I think climbing out on a ledge 60 feet up with no safety is stupid regardless of having been drinking or not. With respect to the Academy's breathalyzer tests, there obviously has to be a number, otherwise there wouldn't be much...

    Naval Academy fights booze...

I think crawling out onto a ledge 60 feet up is stupid, having been drinking beforehand has no bearing on that. Don't get me wrong, I think the administration is doing a good thing in trying to teach mids a responsible way to handle alcohol. What I adamantly disagree with is how much...

    Naval Academy fights booze...

Yeah, didn't work out too well last time there was a ban on it.....Prohibition anyone? This will come across harsh, but I have no sympathy for stupid. I have sympathy for accidents. Accidents are just that, unforeseen. Stupid is a result of poor decisions and irresponsibility. Teach...

Aero 101 - ask your burning questions here

While I don't know about jets per se, the principles are the same. That said, if you pull full aft stick, trims tabs won't let you pull further, they'll just ease the amount of pressure you physically have to exert on the stick. Combine that with the rapid movements associated with BFM/ACM, I...

    Naval Academy fights booze...

I've never liked these arguments, because if I argue against it am I saying it's ok that "one mid" dies? Not at all. It's the same as saying "if gun control saves one life" then it's worth it. Sure, maybe some rule/law/regulation can save one person's life, but at what cost and number of...

    2008 Bah

MB's reply may have been kind of confusing, but what he meant is that if you PCS to a new duty station your BAH can't go down once you get there. That means now that your in Corpus and getting $860, and say for example in 2008 it went down to $800, you'd keep getting $860 since that's what you...

How I got Burned on my DITY Move!

Few things, as Flytpay said, don't give up. From what I gather from your post is that the people in Leavenworth told you that you'd be doing a DITY. It also seems that they gave you a paper trail to that effect. What that means is that if you've got the papers to prove they set up your move...

Looking for gouge? Ask your Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation here (Part 1)

Yup, and without being any kind of eye doctor, I would imagine they kind of let the glasses thing go since you're looking only at the gauges and the goggles can tune in for the distant visual acuity. Looking for gouge? Ask your Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation here (Part 1)

I don't wear glasses but I seem to recall from the NVD training that since the tubes are so adjustable that the pilot can essentially tune them to the same effect as wearing glasses, canceling out the need for them. I guess they just figure that the uncorrected eyesight isn't bad enough to worry...

    Jet Fuel In The Water

Yeah, all I was trying to get at is that some people I know say that the distilled water on the boat tastes "funny" just because it's so pure, as compared to what they drink at home. I personally couldn't tell a difference.
  39. insanebikerboy

    Jet Fuel In The Water

Part of why the water may taste "funny" is because it's distilled so pure. It has to be almost 100% pure since it's used in the power plant too. Granted, JP fuel (or something else) in the water has a distinct taste I'm sure. However, some people complain that it tastes funny because there...

    Jet Fuel In The Water

As fuel is pumped out of a tank, water is pumped into it. Since the two don't mix, it's not an issue of contamination. And yes, it's a ballast/safety issue, if the tanks aren't filled the ship can mess up it's center of gravity, and if I remember a half empty tank can be somewhat of a...

Aero 101 - ask your burning questions here

Are you talking about losing an engine? I was referring to normal flight with both engines operating normally, that there would be (I think) very little yaw, hence the lack of need for a rudder similar to a stabilator. Of course, it has to be big enough to handle the yaw from a loss of an...

Aero 101 - ask your burning questions here

Isn't yaw in a turbojet/fan not as much of an issue since there isn't p-factor associated with the fuselage? Phrased another way, I thought thrust in a jet was almost entirely down the longitudinal axis and very little across the lateral axis. Caveat: obviously if an engine is lost, yaw...
