    After Retirement for Helos

adding up all my "work days" where i've actually gone to work these past couple years in flight school.. I think I actually work less than 9 months a year... factor in 30 days leave, federal holidays, unscheduled days, non-mandatory safety standdowns and Change of commands.... can someone...

    math requirements for flight school

you don't need to be a math whiz to be a good pilot. a basic understanding of geometry, trigonometry and algebra is all you need. in aviation there are lots of rules of thumbs and eyeballing. this isn't because we don't think accuracy is important.. but because sometimes speed is required...

    Women in Naval Aviation?

my formation partner in primary was a female... my onwing in advanced was a female... (both coasties).... my fam partner at the RAG is a female. No difference between males and females when it comes to flying from what i've seen. they're generally well accepted and i haven't seen any...

Your thoughts on Private Pilot Training

well... when i was in primary after I did IFS (25 hrs civilian flight training) my onwing noticed I taxied around with my stick into the wind. He yanked it to the middle and said "don't do that". let's see.. what else... the landing pattern is quite different... instead of the standard box...

yeah the Navy IP's in advanced are pretty tough. Completely different once you get to the FRS... they still expect a lot from you but won't rip off your head and puke down your neck in the process.

A little gift for the P-3 bubbas...

depends on altitude and airspeed... but i'll just toss out a figure between 1000 and 2000 pounds per hour at sea level. refer to natops performance section.
  23. virtu050

A little gift for the P-3 bubbas...

total thrust principle. if you shut down 2 engines you'll need twice as much thrust from the remaining engines to maintain airspeed.
  24. virtu050

A little gift for the P-3 bubbas...

well about 12% of p-3 thrust comes from jet exhaust. can i claim to be 12% jet pilot?

OCS type training for all Naval Officers?

i'm still not seeing the issue here... if noone can tell one's commissioning source (and noone cares) why is everyone saying OCS for everyone is a good thing. If that's not the issue... and this thread is more about 'TBS' like program for ALL naval officers then we should make it such...

OCS type training for all Naval Officers?

HAHA... is said school available as a shore tour? At first I was confused by the original intent of this thread. OCS is just another way to a commission... anything you learn there will be redundant to your academy or rotc training. If you're talking about professional development, isn't that...

Straight to Reserves from Flight School - Status?

I seriously can't see how ignorant you are about the P-3 community especially if your SO went to advanced in Corpus. There's probably several reasons why someone would go the VR route... thought 2 years of active duty/6 years reserve would be enough for them vice the 8 active for VP/VQ... only...

well i guess i'm one of the few people who've had the benefit/misfortune of attending both NROTC and OCS.. (long story) Having gone through both I can say that there are as many differences as similarities. Disclaimer: the following is from my experiences at my ROTC unit and OCS class...

    Flyin for the first time

yeah cessna's require a lot of rudder input. so do t-34's. if you fly t-44's not so much.. but a lot of elevator trim. p-3's are a trim whore and very difficult to get stable.

    Just selected, got questions

when i was in advanced several months ago VT-35 was doing their "sims" in the plane.. which kinda sux i think. The T-44 has this antequated avionics suite that's a whore to learn during CPT's. VT-31 is a larger squadron which means you'll probably fly with more instructors... if you want more...

Congrats on selecting P-3's! The beast is a blast to fly. The advanced syllabus is definitely instrument intensive. Try to enjoy your time in Corpus, even though people like to bash it. I highly recommend visiting mustang stables on the island.. you can ride horseback on the beach for $30...
