Naval History - Circa WW-II

I am off to Truk (Chuuk) Lagoon for some diving and feel the need to learn more about Truk. I do have a copy of the book WWII Wrecks of Truk Lagoon by Dan Bailey, which has a lot of information but was interested in some of the larger/interesting air attacks on the island bastion. In particular Operation Hailstone, TF 58, think Essex lead, which was the most intensive, successful raid on the island. I am off the the Navy Historical Center at the Washington Navy Yard, and was looking for other sources.

Would Canoe U. have anything/or anyone of interest?

Ideas or recommended groups that I could contact appreciated.

Either the Discovery channel or the Military channel had a pretty good special on the wrecks there about six months ago.

The historical archives department in Nimitz library at USNA has a massive amount of original documents. A high school friends dad worked in the department and it was mind boggling some of the stuff they had stashed away up there. I'd call/email before making the trip though as I think most of it is not readily available to the public.

Thanks much, no did not have that reference.

Hey, may have been on one of your flights. Back in mid-70's just after I retired from the NAV, I was being considered for a job running their communications systems in Palau, now Republic of Palau. Made a brief trip over there via Continental. I love garlic but WOW their use of it was just too much, as well as other considerations, I declined to be considered for the post. Everything simply reeked of garlic. Plus side is certainly no vampires in ROP.

Look at this book, I read it about twenty years ago, it's almost 1000 pages. "War in Korea and the complete history of World War II", by Francis Trevelyan Miller, Litt.D, LLD. (Litt.D, LLD. What ever the hell all that shit means.):) Very good read though. Lots of stuff on Truk.:) I've got the book. If you'd like it, let me know, I'll mail it to you.

And like, Casey said... take pictures. If you don't I'll personally make you drive UP and DOWN 270 (morning and evening) everyday for a week.:D
