    F-22s vs Syrian Fencers

I'm guessing that would really grind the gears of the USAF F-15C guys too, since they haven't had the chance to shoot at anything since the original Gulf War... "Not a pound for air to ground" :D

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery...part DEUX

Cool that 101 is finally getting into the action... Any reason why the F-35 pilots are putting both hands on the towel racks vice just your stick hand in the Hornet?

USN Questions about becoming a Navy NFO through NROTC

Nope not anymore, both are now acceptable according to the NAMI Waiver Guide. It's up to what your surgeon feels is the best treatment for you. I will say I got custom LASIK and have no regrets, I was seeing 20/20 the day after the surgery and I'm at 20/15 now. And as long as I stay hydrated I...

USN Questions about becoming a Navy NFO through NROTC

You can always get LASIK. I used to have a -2.75 prescription in both eyes, went under the laser, came out seeing 20/15 and got picked up for SNA. So if distance vision is your only limiting factor don't write yourself off for pilot just yet.

    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

So if I already received a waiver from N3M am I ok or do I need to bring those documents?
  9. Hopeful Hoya

    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

On the OCS website it says you need to bring your medical and dental records when you check in. But wouldn't they already have your medical records from MEPS? So do you just need to bring your dental records and immunization forms or are there other medical records they want?

    Jets?

Because as @sevenhelmet said the platform selection percentages vary widely from class to class, and it would be near impossible to guess your odds of getting jets even if you were selecting a couple of weeks from now, let alone in the 2-3 years it will take you to apply, get selected, finish...

    Automobile to Newport?

Can any recent graduates speak to driving vs. flying? I live in Pittsburgh so I'm about a 9 hour drive which isn't horrible but still it doesn't seem like there's much reason to have a car there with cabs/uber being available. However my processor is pushing for driving and said if I fly it...

    11 Sept 2016

@Chop07 I noticed that other Appendix B guides included warfare device descriptions, collar/emblem descriptions for supply and Sea Bees, the 15 leadership traits, and warfare descriptions. Does this mean we no longer need to have those memorized before reporting?

    18 July Pilot/NFO Board

I've heard the appeal of ENJJPT has diminished in recent years because you can now select heavies/FAIP out of the program, where it used to guarantee you fighter or bomber. Guaranteed T-38 time definitely seems like a plus though. Also I'm pouring one out for you guys tonight, God knows that...

Look in the "Required Reading" Forum, some of the ORs posted OCS survival guides with the needed knowledge at the end. Look for rank tables, warfare device descriptions, etc.

    Recommended readings

I just read a book called Feet Wet by RADM Paul Gillcrist (Ret.). Basically a memoir of his career, which started in the earliest stages of naval jet aviation, through his experiences in Vietnam, serving as CO of an F-8 squadron, CAG of CVW-3, and eventually commanding TOPGUN. Awesome book...

    Final Select Purgatory

It surprised me as well, I was thinking I wouldn't be going until October (in fact I was just about to buy Homecoming tickets for late Sept. when my recruiter texted). Just goes to show you never know what Big Navy has in store.

Best Way to Improve Push-up Score

I'm in the process of training for the Navy PFT and I've been scoring decently on the run (hitting 12 mins consistently and peaking at 11:30) as well as the sit-ups (maxing in the high 60s). But push-ups are the one area that I'm not pleased with, and I can currently do around 32 good form...

    Europe under extreme duress

From what I've been reading, that is missing the larger benefit of belonging to the EU. Sure, the UK probably sends more money to Brussels than it receives in return (since the bureaucracy costs money to run, after all), but it's an overall net positive because of accress to the common market as...

Double dipping between Air Force & Navy?

There are a number of people here (myself included) who have looked at the AF, and basically unless you're scoring 95+ on the TBAS subtests with a decent amount of prior flight time (10 hours plus) then you will not be competitive for an OTS slot. For the USN, it's all about the ASTB score. If...

    Forced REDES to SWO?

What about if it happens during OCS? If I get the whammy, I would definitely be interested in staying in as a SWO or Intel.
  29. Hopeful Hoya

    Europe under extreme duress

I worded that poorly, I meant more in the sense that many countries in continental (especially west and central) Europe seem to be reluctant participants in the collective defense agreements, at best, with many of them falling below the NATO-suggested defense spending level of 2% of GDP. So if...

    Europe under extreme duress

I guess a better question is would such an arrangement be credible without US and/or British involvement? Europe isn't doing itself any favors with continued expressions of disillusionment/disinterest in the collective security of the continent, and if half of the EU had to be dragged kicking...

    Europe under extreme duress

Considering all the support they've been throwing behind "separatists" in eastern Ukraine for the last two plus years that has yet to inflict significant defeats on another gutted ex-Soviet military, the current Russian military seems like more like a paper tiger than a credible invasion threat...

    Medical Condition "Bible"

You should get a checkup at 6 months, and after you get this done you can forward all the documentation to MEPS, who will get back to you after they review it to schedule a physical.
  33. Hopeful Hoya

    Medical Condition "Bible"

You can get it before, and then you'll forward all of the pre and post-op documentation to MEPS before they schedule you for an appointment. Might as well start the LASIK process now because the wait to go to MEPS can reach a month or more, no sense waiting twice before and after you get the...

Not expecting one for a little bit, seeing as how here are still many people waiting to go from the February board.

LASIK, Naval Vision requirements, MEPS, and Eligibility

Just be aware that even if N3M grants you a waiver, NAMI can still give you the whammy. In the NAMI waiver guide it says for LASIK that applicants must have less than pre-op 3.00 cylinder.

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

Currently the proposal is only for O-3s/O-4s in technical fields, but I wonder if this will eventually open the door for a 15-20 year patched super LT? http://www.navytimes.com/story/military/careers/2016/06/09/pentagon-promotion-up-or-out/85638312/

LASIK, Naval Vision requirements, MEPS, and Eligibility

Can't speak as to whether you are eligible for LASIK or not, but I had it done just over a year ago, and went through MEPS in February and it was a non-issue. Still get some minor dry eye from time to time, but I had my one year checkup a couple of weeks ago and I was seeing better than 20/15 in...

    Advice Needed

Really? At my school they conferred degrees a few days before the actual graduation ceremony, and right after we walked we could pick up our diplomas. Maybe that is the exception to the rule though.
  43. Hopeful Hoya

    Advice Needed

You put an earliest ship date on your application, but I'm not sure if there is a limit as to how far into the future you can put after the board meets. Right now the NRC won't accept applications unless you're <6 months out from graduation so I would be surprised if you could potentially have...

    ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

I think you're nuking this a bit and that is probably why you struggled last time. If it says "FIRE" and the procedure is to set both knobs to the minimum followed by the clutch, then stop whatever you're doing, fiddle with the knobs quickly to find the right direction, turn both in the right...

    Eye surgery

If he meets the vision cutoffs for SNA (20/40 for distant vision is the big one) then no he does not need surgery. SNFO has no similar distant vision requirements. However if he does not meet that cutoff and wants to fly, then he will need to get LASIK or PRK.

    ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

It's been a while since I took the test so I don't remember the specifics about which way to turn the knob, but yes those three gauges correspond to the three knobs. I would recommend writing down the emergency procedures and what knobs to turn as well, and then spending a few minutes thinking...

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

    ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

Don't sweat it too much, the test will tell you what each knob is before you start the test, and when the emergency actually happens, it only takes a second to slightly twist the knob to make sure you're going the right way before committing. That's what I did and I scored fine.

    Seeking Advice

ASTB-E is the newer version that was implemented in December 2013. The biggest change was adding the UAV and performance-based sections. That is the version everyone now takes, but it is still colloquially referred to as the ASTB.
