NATO Declares Russia an Enemy - Your take.

I don't think this really surprises anyone. Even though Putin portrayed an exterior of cooperation and friendliness, deep down he is a product of the Soviet government hierarchy, a career official who would love to see Russia return to the glory days of the Soviet Union. It's be pretty apparent...

    Underwater in Pensacola?

I saw the Blue Angels post about this on their Facebook page today, pretty crazy, 20+ inches in the last 24 hours?! Seems like the whole East Coast is getting hammered, we're getting flash flood warnings up here in DC too.

    National OPO Blog

Sir, I just wanted to thank you again for being on here. I know you have answered many questions that I have had, and getting such important information straight from the source is invaluable to those of us pursuing our dreams of becoming Naval officers. (This is for NavyoffRec and RUFiO too).

April 2014 SNA and NFO Board

Very true. I think there's something very cool about going up in such a high performance machine with 3 of your squadronmates, it reminds me of the "spirited" drives I'm sure many of us have taken with a car full of friends.

April 2014 SNA and NFO Board

I apologize is this is bad gouge, but I thought I remembered reading that the Navy is no longer training new pilots in the Prowler, and all the VQ FRSes have transitioned to the Growler? Also, best of luck to everyone whose packages are going to be seen at the board. It's amazing how many of...

17 Year Old Looking To Become A Pilot

Nittany, when it comes to stick time, does any amount of time (i.e. 10 hours) make a difference, or does it really only help if you go all the way and get a PPL?

April 2014 SNA and NFO Board

Yeah I've heard that, it has to be a pretty nice lifestyle. Personally I'd choose getting to see the world and live in places like SD and Pensacola over than living in Montana or Alaska with the newest toys, but that's just me. I guess as with everything in life, every option has it's pros and cons.
  10. Hopeful Hoya

April 2014 SNA and NFO Board

I'm curious why that is. Is it that the AF/Army are suffering bigger reductions in force than the Navy, or is it more that people don't like the idea of deploying on a ship or don't like the Navy's mission so they apply to the AF and Army first?

    NFO FY14 Board date?

The SNA/SNFO board is a rolling board, so it convenes at least every 90 days, but it can convene earlier than 90 days if the Board has enough packages to move forward. The last board was in mid March, and according to the National OPO, the next one will not convene before late April. Here is...

April 2014 SNA and NFO Board

Great vid, I got a good laugh out of that one :D I really hope that the F-35 doesn't go the way of the -22 and end up so expensive per unit that they will never see real combat. I realize that comparing an air superiority fighter to a fighter/ground attack aircraft is like comparing apples to...

    Multiple concussions

Fair enough, just gotta keep the focus on the things I can control and face the hurdles as they come I guess. Thanks for the advice everyone, I really do appreciate how great of a community we have here at AW. :)

    Multiple concussions

So I guess the lesson is that there is no peace of mind until after your OCS physical results, and that it will be a very long two years for me.

    Multiple concussions

Interesting. Well I tried Googling it, but do you know if I could find the standards relating to head injuries anywhere? I was planning on seeing this doctor this summer anyways just to get all my ducks in order for my future package, and I figure if I have the standards I can find out how much...

    Multiple concussions

Really? That's surprising and kind of disheartening to me. Even if you have been fully cleared by a doctor with no recurring issues (the guy I saw is one of the founders of the ImPact test), you can still get the NAMI wammy?

    Convincing Parents on Lasik

I'm glad to hear that your case went so well, and thank you for your advice. I'm going to be home for Easter Break in a few days so I hope to be able to talk to her and win her over.

    Multiple concussions

I'm in a similar situation, having sustained 3 concussions during my life. At least as far I understand the waiver guide, as long as your loss of consciousness/amnesia was less than 5 minutes you do not need a waiver, just a checkout with a Flight Surgeon.

What Motivated you to go Naval Aviation?

I'm sure has to be a pretty nice gig to fly those, I can't even imagine what it would be like to be one of those Marine Pilots (or the AF guys who fly Air Force 1, for that matter)
  22. Hopeful Hoya

What Motivated you to go Naval Aviation?

I gotta say we're pretty lucky with what we see around here. That was the first time I saw the MH-65s but I always see some UH-60s and CH-3s in the Presidential livery flying up and down the river.

Some pretty amazing stories, although it seems that however you end up here you're pretty much guaranteed to absolutely love it (I'm sure the choker whites and the gold wings help too :D).

What Motivated you to go Naval Aviation?

While out running today on the Potomac (and with every part of my body screaming for me to stop), two Coastie MH-65s flew over me and seeing them pushed me to a personal best time. As I got back home, I was reflecting on that and what inspired me to want to be a Naval Aviator. For me, it was...

    Convincing Parents on Lasik

I appreciate all of your advice. I don't think I need to do something as drastic as emancipating myself. She's rational and I know that if I present her with the right information and right argument I can convince her. So at this stage that's what I'm trying to do. An upwards of 90% success is a...

    Convincing Parents on Lasik

I'm 20 years old and healthy, and I wanted to get a consultation for Lasik or PRK so that I can go SNA/SNFO in a couple of years. As far as I know my case is pretty straightforward, I've been stable on the border of -1.75/-2.00 for several years now, and I have no other eye issues. The issue is...

To everyone aspiring to go into OCS: Why pursue military life vs civilian life?

*with the caveat that I am not there yet... Serving and flying is something that I've wanted to do since I was 5. I did the whole thing with flight simulators when I was younger, and I considered going to the Academy or doing ROTC but in the end I wanted to give myself a "normal" college...

    Special Forces for NAs/NFOs

The 160th is kick-ass and I would kill to have even the opportunity to join them. But from reading it seems like it is nearly impossible to get an aviation slot at Army OCS, and that your designator is not picked until you are at OCS, unlike the Navy where you know before you go. Both of these...

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Just curious, have you guys noticed a correlation between your other standardized test scores (like SATs) and how well you did on the ASTB? Obviously the new stick and throttle section is not comparable, but I was just wondering if the math, critical reading, etc. sections are comparable to the...

    Recruiters

I was wondering when an appropriate time would be to contact a recruiter. I googled/searched the forum a little bit and I didn't find much, except I did see that people could be picked up by boards months out from their graduation date, and sometimes even longer. I'm currently a sophomore and I...

Roger that, heading back to the books. Roger that. I was asking more in a general sense regarding Navy spec ops as opposed to being specific to my (hopeful) career path, sorry if my wording was a little ambiguous. Anyways, I'm glad to see that both pointies and helos have the opportunity to...

Platform Selection, How does that work?

Grizzly, congrats on your #1 and selecting. Although I can't imagine how disappointing it is, it sounds like you're in a great squadron and you're going to have a lot of fun. Blow some stuff up for people like me, who are still years away from primary and would kill to be in your position right...

    Special Forces for NAs/NFOs

That's an interesting option that I definitely will consider. I still think the Navy is the better choice for me (at the risk of verging into "jets or bust" territory) because of the higher chance of selecting something with a tailhook, but I'm open to anything flying related at this point. Is...

    Special Forces for NAs/NFOs

Completely understand. At this point all I'm about focused on is building the best package I can for the SNA/SNFO board. I was asking more out of curiosity than making future career plans. Pure conjecture on my part, and I've since been proven wrong with the -84 and -85 squadrons. Sorry if I...

    Special Forces for NAs/NFOs

I figured as much. I realize that the Navy isn't like the movies and if I'm lucky enough to get an SNA/SNFO slot, they're not going to spend 2 years and a million dollars training me for one tour and then say "oh we're going to send you to BUD/S". It just still surprised me that the Navy...

    Special Forces for NAs/NFOs

This was the quote I was referring to: If true that would be very interesting. I assume the NAs would go through some sort of SEALs/special forces training regimen to prepare them for ground ops?
  46. Hopeful Hoya

    Special Forces for NAs/NFOs

Yeah I figured as much, I just found it surprising that the Navy doesn't even have a Helo squadron dedicated to SEAL support. Although, I guess it would be kind of redundant with the special forces now being more and more under the single umbrella of SOCOM as opposed to being divided by service...

Hey everyone, Just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a student at Georgetown working towards graduating and hopefully getting a SNA slot from OCS (still a couple of years away though). Anyways, I'm a long time lurker and I'm just trying to soak in everything I can about Naval Aviation in...
