    Travel to OHARP

OHARP is technically no cost, but you get partial BAH (~$700 a month) and it looks like the Navy is now coding pilot's orders down to Pensacola as a PCS move so your travel post OCS (i.e. Newport to OHARP location and then down to Pensacola) is covered, at least from my rudimentary understanding...

    The basics of API

I'm doing museum detail currently and it's not bad, you get to talk to a lot of interesting people and look at cool planes all day. Plus it gets you out of being voluntold for a lot of less desirable jobs, like watching people piss or checking IDs outside of the API building for an hour.

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery...part DEUX

Foxtrot from VFA-106 in TACDEMO configuration at NASP today as part of the fleet fly in. If any of you were there thanks for coming, it was great to get up close and personal with the aircraft and hear more about the communities.

    14 NOV 16 Pilot/NFO Board

Unless things have changed, when I was about to leave in December that was not the case, as our Class O's briefed us that a significant overhaul of the academic curriculum was underway and part of that was shortening the program to 10 weeks. It was not a question of if, but when.

    Depth perception mega thread

It doesn't need to be retaken at MEPS, but N3M will only accept optometry results from MEPS or another military clinic. What they will no longer do is accept results from civilian optometrists.

    The basics of API

NFOs are getting pushed through very quickly right now. I.e. report to Pensacola right after finishing OCS, waiting 2-3 weeks to class up for IFS, and 2-3 weeks to class up for API after finishing IFS. For pilots the wait is much greater, I've heard everything from 3 to 8+ weeks to class up for...

    A-Pool info

Just an update: I checked in last week, and the way it looks like they are doing it now is you take the next two weeks to get all of your appointments and medical upchit done, and then you take the APIT on Friday of that second week.

    Magic Carpet

The video I saw had a LCDR from VX-23 who was talking about how the goal was to make landing back at the Boat a completely administrative task, so that you could expend that mental energy on the actual mission. He also said he bagged something like 200 touch and go's in a 2 hour period during...

I've gotten similar errors the past few days as well.

    12 APR 17 SNA/SNFO Board

Doubtful. The Navy can make as many SNAs as it wants but it can't push them through the pipeline any faster unless they increase capacity. Even with 13 weeks of OHARP the word is to expect a 2+ month wait to class up for API right now.

    What NRC considers competitive

I had 3 tickets FWIW. I was having a discussion with the OR in my office the other day and there is a certain number at which the NRD CO must approve a waiver, and a higher number at which the NRC CO must also approve a waiver. I don't know the numbers off the top of my head but I'm sure...

    FY 17 OCS BOARD SCHEDULE

Yes, because the Navy's FY starts in October, so any board after that date would date would be for FY18 selections since they would commission after 1 OCT.

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

No the flight sim is definitely still part of it. Maybe they meant the spatial appreciation section? (it was replaced by the UAV section on the ASTB-E)

    Flying with Contact Lenses

Yeah when I had contacts I would always get a week's worth of testers to try out before deciding on a brand. Personally I thought the dailies were very much worth the extra expense, it was so much easier not having to worry about losing one, keeping them clean, what to do with them at night if I...

Will I get disqualified when I join?

Just anecdotally, I had some counseling in the past for a family divorce that was diagnosed as a low grade adjustment disorder. I was never placed on medication, diagnosed with depression or anxiety, suicidal, etc. and even then it was a bear to get through N3M, and even more hoops to jump...

    LASIK for SNA?

No I had it done in Pittsburgh at a TLC.
  23. Hopeful Hoya

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Yeah nothing like that, from what I remember the questions are all based on paragraph-length passages, which range from simplistic story-type scenarios to dense, legalese-esque Navy regulations.
  24. Hopeful Hoya

    LASIK for SNA?

Yes that would work. As long as you submit the paperwork to MEPS >6 months post-op you're good to go.
  25. Hopeful Hoya

    23 JAN 17 Pilot/NFO Board

Fair enough, I suppose it's easy enough to downplay it after you've been through it and kind of see the method behind the madness, so to say. To give you a measuring stick, I think I did something like 85 sit-ups, 50 pushups, and ran a 12 min 1.5 mile right before I left (so I clearly wasn't in...

    12 APR 17 SNA/SNFO Board

Have you been seen by MEPS and medically PQ'd by N3M? That is typically the most time consuming part of the process so if you haven't gone through that yet you are unlikely to make it to this board.
  27. Hopeful Hoya

    LASIK for SNA?

The way it works is having the surgery DQ's you, and then 6 months after the surgery you can apply for the waiver. Unless there are any significant complications (dry eye requiring regular use of eye drops, haze/blooming issues at night, etc.) then waivers are readily available.

    23 JAN 17 Pilot/NFO Board

Y'all are nuking this beyond belief. Before every PFA they will demonstrate the proper form they expect. If you do it wrong, they will give you at least one warning, maybe two, to correct your form before they start not counting them (and I never saw a DI or RDC take 10 or 20 reps off, unless...
  29. Hopeful Hoya

    LASIK for SNA?

Nope, there's nothing you need to fill out. You just have to give your recruiter all of the documentation from your pre-op workups, the actual surgery, and post-op checkups and he/she will submit it to MEPS for review.
  30. Hopeful Hoya

    23 JAN 17 Pilot/NFO Board

Not sure exactly when, but the Navy landing them on a carrier never moved past a proof of concept phase. No CH-53, but the Navy does fly MH-53s which perform minesweeping duties (I neglected to list it in my earlier post).
  31. Hopeful Hoya

    23 JAN 17 Pilot/NFO Board

The active component of the Navy doesn't fly C-130s, only the reserve does. Your choices will be: Strike (F/A-18C, F/A-18E/F, E/A-18G, and F-35C ...eventually); E-2/C-2; Maritime (P-3, EP-3, P-8); MH-60R/S; and E-6

    LASIK for SNA?

I should have worded that better, I meant that even if SNA hadn't worked out for me LASIK still would have been one of the best things I've done. But luckily it did so that makes the LASIK that much more worth it. :)

Recruiter won't submit my packet for SWO...

There are certainly better and worse times to do it (i.e. if you can hold it while the CO is speaking or during the middle of drill that would certainly be better) but they are pretty understanding. And if you have to go, don't be afraid to ask for a head call because I guarantee you, especially...

USMC Good enough for Marine fighter pilot?

Before someone jumps all over you, I would suggest taking a step back, read the forums for a bit (and especially the Forum's SOPs) and then post original, constructive questions. If you do that, you will find: 1) Asking what are your chances of getting jets will result in you getting made fun...

Recruiter won't submit my packet for SWO...

When you get to OCS, make sure you hydrate. You'll get your flight physical that first week, and you'll likely be tired, stressed, and dehydrated. You'd be surprised how much your vision can change just based on how well you are hydrated (the same goes for your performance on the IST as well)...
  36. Hopeful Hoya

    LASIK for SNA?

Then yes you would need some form of corrective surgery. LASIK and PRK are both waiverable, but MEPS will not see you until 6 months post-op. I got it done and it was one of the best things I ever did (even if I did not end up going SNA), however be aware that it is a significant expense...

    23 JAN 17 Pilot/NFO Board

I would very highly doubt this. The word from NOPO/NRC is that for the next few months SNA/SNFO slots for OCS are undermanned, and that applicants from this board and the April board should expect to ship very quickly. When I'm in the office tomorrow I'll check with my recruiter and processor...

    Return of the Supersonic Airliner?

I still don't understand how this would be economical even if you're a BSD CEO of some Fortune 500 company. Even if it saved you a few hours on a trans-Atlantic hop, is that extra time really worth double or triple the cost of normal business class travel especially when you can still be...

Believe me, that is the last thing you will have time for at OCS (especially the first 9 weeks). A Word on OCS (as of 2 DEC 16)

I would not plan on having any time at least the first 6 weeks for unrestricted internet access, so definitely have auto pay set up before hand and maybe have a family member check on it every couple of weeks or so to make sure there are no issues.

A Word on OCS (as of 2 DEC 16)

My hatchmate was on autopilot after RLP and he responded "Aye Aye Chief" to our class Gunny when he told us to get back into our hatch after we were both done (we were inspected by a Chief). Our Gunny chased us into our hatch and I would have bet any amount of money that we were about to have...

FIFY. Even better, they only sew the butterbars on one set before you leave so you will literally only wear one of your three sets during OHARP, then never wear them again due to khakis/bags in flight school and the sundown. You can definitely bring a laptop to use before/after OCS...

Receiving OCS dates before college graduation?

A Word on OCS (as of 2 DEC 16)

Doubtful, word my class got is that the Navy is very undermanned for NFOs and is pushing them through the pipeline as fast as they can make them (the guys in my class down there now are jumping SNAs who have been OHARPing/stuck A-pool for over 5 months). Don't rip anything off or label...
