    18 July Pilot/NFO Board

They are probably talking about Fiscal Years. Since people selected in this board will not be commissioning by October 1st when the new fiscal year starts, they will be considered FY17 selections (i.e. you would have to be at OCS by July 1 to be FY16). This is more important for the SWO...

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

It means they do a scan before the surgery to "map" your corneas and adjust the laser accordingly. It's become pretty standard the past few years, it's a little more expensive but my surgeon highly recommended it as it allows them to more accurately use the laser.

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Good stuff, but now NAMI actually prefers LASIK. From the waiver guide: "Wavefront-guided LASIK (“Custom LASIK”) is preferred in aviation personnel, as custom treatment may increase visual acuity and final vision outcomes, but in no way is required for a waiver recommendation, as not all...

Best path to take to become an astronaut?

If you want a great book about what it takes to get there, read Riding Rockets by Col. Mike Mullane. Although his info would be a little dated (he was selected in the 1978 Astronaut Group) a lot of it is still applicable and he gives a hilarious but at the same time sobering look into the life...

18 MAY PILOT NFO ROLLING BOARD

Anecdotal, take with a grain of salt, but I have a friend in the pipeline down in Pcola and he only classed up for API last week after graduating OCS in mid-October. Lots of people in A-pool and weather have been causing delays so it sounds like the pipeline is pretty backed up, and that will...

    Seeking Advice

No, the Navy is largely indifferent to your level of flight training. It definitely can push you over into the Y category if you're close, but it can't save you if your ASTB scores and GPA are not competitive. Best thing you can do is study your ass off, retake the ASTB, and shoot for 8s.

    Final Select Purgatory

Thanks dude! Yeah the wait is going to be long but on the bright side it gives me more time to get in shape. Plus I've resigned myself to being in Newport in the winter already haha.

    Checking in as well.

Congrats everyone!! I'm PRO-Y for SNA as well, hope to see some of you at OCS :)

18 MAY PILOT NFO ROLLING BOARD

Heard from a reliable source (not my OR) that results are being finalized and should be released this afternoon. Best of luck to everyone!

18 MAY PILOT NFO ROLLING BOARD

Nope, just a guess based on the outcomes of prior SNA boards.

18 MAY PILOT NFO ROLLING BOARD

I wouldn't get your hopes up for Monday. Knowing how big Navy works, since the AD guys haven't found out yet, I wouldn't expect an answer until Tuesday at the earliest.

    Privately Owned Navy Jet

No VX-9 guys but lots of USN types (including a few with Demo team experience). http://www.warriorairshows.org/#!flight-team/cuy0 Interesting about what your TPS classmates' impressions were. What's the going price for a T-6 though? I never thought that the L-39 was attractive from a purely...

18 MAY PILOT NFO ROLLING BOARD

SNA/SNFO boards usually come back pretty quickly. I would guess AD guys get it on Friday and NRD applicants get it on Monday.

    Privately Owned Navy Jet

That thing is many pilot's ultimate dream toy. Fast, easy flying, extremely reliable, and other than fuel (~$1000 an hour) it's pretty cheap to maintain and mint examples can be had for less than a Ferrari. When it was looking like I was never going to have a chance to fly in the Navy my goal...

    ValuJet 592 Crash

No, they merged with AirTran, and even though ValuJet was the nominal survivor, they retained AirTran's name and branding due to ValuJet's horrid reputation.

    Selection Chances/Pilot Slot

Sure, there are definitely times when your recruiter won't know the answers to your questions, but for very basic stuff, like how does GPA and past arrest history affect your chances, then your recruiter should be the first line of defense. If they do not know, and if you do some searching and...

    Army CAPT Suing POTUS

Not my claim, that was his legal grounds for suing. It seems that Congress' counsel agrees with the WH on this one (!), so this sounds like it won't get very far.

    Army CAPT Suing POTUS

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/05/us/islamic-state-war-powers-lawsuit-obama.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur Apparently suing over the fact that Congress has not approved the war against ISIS. Your political feelings aside, how is it even possible to sue someone in the CoC?
  22. Hopeful Hoya

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Yeah definitely don't retake, those scores are very competitive for SNA/SNFO.
  23. Hopeful Hoya

    Selection Chances/Pilot Slot

Navy selection rates for Pilots have been high lately (70%+) but that can change and you have no control over that. Best thing you can do it put together the strongest kit you can (ASTB scores, LORs, Motivational Statement, etc.) and go from there. I don't have much knowledge of the AF side...

OCS Preparing for OCS in college

-To my understanding, BDCP is technically active but hasn't been funded for several years, but I will let one of the recruiters charm in on that. - You can submit your application 6 months out, but you can work with a recruiter earlier than that. I took my ASTB last May and started working with...

    Barely passed flight physical

I take them when my eyes are feeling dry, and I load up when I know I have an upcoming eye exam (usually 4-5 times a day starting one week before my exam). Did so before MEPS and I was a hard 20/20 and I got about 3/4ths of the 20/15 line.

    Interesting Air Superiority article

Interesting. Any idea why the Eagle is so much higher than the Strike Eagle? Possibly higher average airframe age on the Charlies?
  28. Hopeful Hoya

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

No, it won't change those scores. I believe you have 90 days after the OAR where you can just take the ASTB-E portion, so if your OAR improves and you come back with a PRO-N from the May 18 board you can retake the ASTB portions with your new OAR score to get new pilot/nfo scores.

Waste to pay for private pilot's license?

What do the speeds in a 172 look like vs a T-6 especially in the pattern? If I get selected I thought about getting 3-4 hours of time before I do IFS, but would it really make that much of a difference especially when you're only in the 172 for a couple of weeks and if the T-6 is a completely...

    Minimum vision requirements - HELP

Unfortunately, the commissioning guidelines listed in MANMED Chapter 15, 15-36, §1, (a) state: "Current distant or near visual acuity of any degree that does not correct with spectacle lenses to 20/20 in each eye is disqualifying" Check with your ophthalmologist and see if there's any way to...

    Interesting Air Superiority article

Even then it may be difficult, as AF maintenance crews have apparently had problems in the past finding the correct tooling they needed to repair existing Raptors. http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/raptor-resurrected-what-will-it-take-restart-f-22-fighter-15862
  32. Hopeful Hoya

    Minimum vision requirements - HELP

You are not eligible because vision in both eyes must be correctable to 20/20 for SNA and SNFO applicants. For SNA the maximum uncorrected is 20/40, but for SNFO there is no limit for uncorrected vision...

    VQ Hinge Charged with Espionage

Yeah makes sense, maybe saying they were friends was a stretch but it certainly can't look good if you're a CDR or CAPT who endorsed him for something like "leadership", right?
  35. Hopeful Hoya

    VQ Hinge Charged with Espionage

Sounds like he had a lot of friends who are/were heavy-hitters and probably don't want the questions that would come with being associated with him.

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery...part DEUX

Sorry, I was speaking more generally about anti-ship weaponry, not specifically long range stand-off ASMs.
  37. Hopeful Hoya

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery...part DEUX

In one of the passes, the SU-24 was below the bridge line of the Cook. This was not a slightly aggressive flyby but instead a simulated attack profile for use with anti-ship missiles - that is why it is extraordinary.

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Yeah like the Chief said, a recruiter probably isn't going to be able to do much for you right now. If you can get all of your medical documentation together and write your motivational statement that would be a great start. That way you'll only really need to fill out paperwork when you start...

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Oh ok yeah it's not doable. IIRC you can't even get picked up until 6 months out from your grad date. Word of advice though, in the meantime I'd go through the DD 2807 and for every "yes" that you have, start tracking down all of relevant the medical documentation. It can take forever to track...

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

The date in the APSR is just your "earliest ship" date. Your OCS date could be much beyond that due to manning guidelines, pipeline backups, age critical people, etc.

    MEPS Questions

I believe the tests take a couple of days to come back, then your package has to be submitted to N3M which takes 2-3 days to come back with a PQ or NPQ. The kits due date means the kit has to be at the board by that date, and with the NRD and NRC needing to do their own checks (takes 1-2 weeks...

    Caution to SNA/NFO prospects

Lubricating drops dude, seriously. I notice my vision definitely degrades sometimes as well, especially late at night, when I'm tired, after I'm on a plane, etc. If I'm good about keeping them hydrated then I have no issues.

Well it took two months and a personal connection in the NRC, but I finally received my waiver-approved letter today from N3M!! Could not have come at a better time either, got word in the middle of interviews in San Francisco so not a moment. It is still sinking in, does not feel real to me...

    DQ'd Due to Patellar Tendinitis

Just got the N3M letter back today, DQ'd with waiver not approved due to history of bilateral knee instability and an adjustment disorder (not sure if a year of counseling after a divorce or my speeding tickets triggered this). Recruiter said that the letter didn't have the "N3M will reconsider...

    Feb-Mar 2016 Rolling Pilot/NFO Board

If you need to leave after a specific date I would contact your OR and let him/her know so they can put the right date on there. I believe if you leave it black it means you are available to ship ASAP.
