Thanks man! Seems that my daily sacrifices to the Navy gods are working. Next time I'll make one for everyone at the board. :D

NEWS This is US Navy... We Fly?

Based off of the fact that the Navy has complained in recent weeks about "aggressive" intercepts of P-8s by PLA fighters and Past History, it seems like there's definitely a chance that things escalate.

    ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

Took my ASTB earlier today. Scored a 70 9/9/9... Over the moon to say the least. I figured I'd type up my impressions since what people previously posted definitely helped me. I'll try to avoid rehashing what everyone said before. Math: Got really hard really quickly for me. Had 2-3 Log...

    YIKES!

Apparently this guy is used to making ridiculous claims: http://news.yahoo.com/nasa-alleged-plane-hackers-boast-breaching-space-station-173731094.html If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

    Interesting Air Superiority article

Fair enough, I'll take his work with a grain of salt from now on then.

    Interesting Air Superiority article

Fair enough, obviously I have not flown a front line fighter or Raptor so not very read into what its strengths or weaknesses are, just of the "more is better" mentality. Even if it does well with -9Ms and no cuing system, would anyone really turn down the extra margin they provide?
  8. Hopeful Hoya

    Interesting Air Superiority article

Don't believe that is true. -22s have been carrying -9Ms in their two side internal bays forever, only issue is that they have to open the doors and stick the missile out into the air stream to get a lock before they can fire, compared to the -120s which they can quickly "eject" from the center...

    Interesting Air Superiority article

Another intriguing article in a similar vein (albeit maybe a bit less speculative) http://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/why-its-sad-that-the-f-22-just-fired-its-first-guided-a-1704889474 It's crazy to think that even one of the least-favored aircraft programs in the military right now (A-10) has a...

Had to read that in high school. Great book, will definitely change your perspective on things, but by God did I want to gouge my eyes out with a spoon while reading it.

If you're looking on a per-aircraft basis, the relevant numbers can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_active_United_States_military_aircraft#Navy Not sure about community sizes in terms of NAs/NFOs though.

Help with questions on ASTB Mechanical Flashcards

I came across this in my studies, seems like you already took the OAR but figured I'd post it for anyone else who had trouble figuring it out (as I did). You were right setting PE=KE, so the equation should have been (.5)*(.3)*v^2 = (5.3)*(9.8)*(.2). The math is pretty annoying to do by writing...

    Starting my LASIK Process

Just wanted to check in and say the surgery went amazingly smoothly yesterday. Woke up this morning with no pain and only a small amount of dry eye, and am seeing 20/20 in my right and 20/15 in my left. Can't get over how amazing this is. One hurdle down. Now to hit the books, crush the ASTB...

NEWS Autistic girl and family removed from United flight

Well one thing is certain: no matter the outcome, the only winners here will be the lawyers. Parent's should have planned ahead and flight attendants probably could have handled the situation better, although it seems like it was a lack of training on how to recognize/deal with such a...

    ASTB/OAR vs. SAT

Studying for the ASTB as well. At least from what I've seen so far, the OAR is much different from what I remember the SAT being like. Math is similar but has some more advanced topics (logs and more complex problems), Critical Reading is much more technical than the SAT, and Mechanical...

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery...part DEUX

    Pilot Life after OCS

    1) Whatever you select for, you process for. Through OCS you are essentially guaranteed whatever designator you select, barring a background check problem, NAMI whammy, or DOR during OCS/Flight school. 2) NFO vs NA, do some searching because there is a lot of good info on this site which...

    May-ish 2015 Pilot/NFO Rolling Board

Thanks for the correction, had not seen that but glad to hear for all of our civilian friends applying for NFO.
  35. Hopeful Hoya

No more boards until October (end of FY)?

Do some forum searching, but the answer is a resounding NO. Other than the fact that NRC (i.e. the national recruiting command) is currently only accepting AD applications for NFO, no designator remains closed, and if your recruiter/NRD tells you otherwise that is BS. Try to get them to change...

    Aviator to Finance

Not worried too much, barring another 2008 episode. Aviator to Finance

Can't (and probably never will) be able to buy a F-18 or S-60 and fly it off a carrier. I think @Uncle Fester said it best - You have the rest of your life to make money, but only ~10 years to fly a grey aircraft off of a CVN. Talked to a recruiter yesterday, I think I'm convinced that the...

    Navy or MC Aviation?

I'm in a similar position. It depends on not only what types of flying you want to do, but what kind of officer you want to be: Navy: Much more sea/power projection focused. Most squadrons are sea-going and are embarked on CVNs, DDs, DDGs, etc. Larger number of fixed wing ops. Officer core is...

How much time to study for ATSB?

Yeah that sounds like a load, I can see why you want to wait. For me I really don't have much major work left this semester until finals, and this summer will be much busier for me because I'll be interning in NYC working ~12 hour days, so I'd rather just get it out of the way now since I will...

How much time to study for ATSB?

Thanks man! Fair enough. Main reason I want to take it now is I actually have a lot of free time, and I know this summer/next semester will be a lot busier so I'd rather get it out of the way now. Plus like you said it gives me the opportunity to take it again should I do poorly. Glad to hear...

How much time to study for ATSB?

Hey guys, I was thinking of taking the ATSB in late April/early May since I only have 4 classes and 3 finals this semester. I was just curious if I spent about an hour a day for the next month studying, if that would be enough time to get a decent score? I'm coming from a non-technical...
