    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

Pretty interesting article, at least for a current civilian. Curious to see what you guys think: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/11/us-military-tries-halt-brain-drain/413965/?utm_source=SFFB

I have no experience with the OAR one, my impressions are limited to the ASTB-E version. And no, this is the Barron's book I used: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1438005695?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Exactly the way I felt. They rushed to publish it that they were forced to re-release a revised edition something like a month later because the first was so chock-full of errors. Even then I still caught a few errors in my revised edition.

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

I thought the Accepted Book was kind of crappy, I liked the Barron's 3rd Edition much better (seemed to be more accurate to what the material on the test was actually like).

ASTB trumps everything for SNA. Take it and see how you do. I don't believe waiting until the new FY will change much, selection rates have been pretty high for a couple of years now.

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Yeah I still use math a lot but it is either of the more theoretical side (i.e. using calculus to derive a proof for a specific concept) or very simple plug these numbers into an equation and see what the output is. Not doing a lot of the rate/time/distance calculations, geometry, word problems...

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

I studied for ~2 hours every day for about 2 weeks before the test. I'm a pretty good test taker and have played Flight Sims so a lot of the aviation stuff I knew, but I hadn't taken a formal math class in almost three years and I don't do a lot of critical reading being an economics major...

    Am I competitive?

Do some searching around, there's even a thread where some ORs specifically list out what is and isn't competitive. Short answer: ASTB is everything for SNA/SNFO, and you're on the bubble with those scores.

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Strange that you didn't see one, I had at least 3 or 4 questions about logs. Yeah you didn't need to count in base 2 for the binary, it just asked what the number 4 was in binary (100). You don't need to spend a whole lot of time on either topic, just memorize the basic rules of logs and...

When to go see the Flight Surgeon

Speedy recovery Pickle. Basal cell/Melanoma runs in my Dad's side of the family so I know firsthand that's nasty stuff. Glad you caught it before it became a much bigger problem.

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Big things I would say: Make sure to study for the UAV portion. Since it was only introduced a couple of years ago a lot of the older gouge doesn't cover it and it can trip people up. I attached some practice problems for you. I also attached a Barron's practice test. You can skip the parts...

How badly does an arrest hurt an applicant?

According to what @NavyOffRec and @RUFiO181 have said in the past, past arrests are viewed through the lens of your ASTB scores. An arrest of any kind doesn't look good but high scores (8s and 9s) can make up for it. I'm not an OR and I did not stay in a Holiday Inn last night, but if you're...

Nov-Dec 2015 Pilot NFO Rolling Board

I believe they say 30 days because the NRD and then NRC has to do their own processing/routing on your package after your Processor submits it and before it gets to PRO-BOARD.

    LASIK or PRK

Like I've said I'm not a flight surgeon so I'm far from qualified to read into the legalese of the stuff, but I checked with my recruiter and with the members here before I got surgery and they said LASIK is good to go from the Navy's perspective. There have been a number of candidates on AW...

USN to challenge S. China Sea Islands

USS Lassen will challenge China's territorial claims around artificial islands in the South China Sea within the next 24 hours. Will be interesting to see what the Chinese response will be. http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/10/26/us-southchinasea-usa-idUSKCN0SK2AC20151026

    LASIK or PRK

According to the waiver guide the Navy prefers wavefront-guided LASIK due to the faster recovery time and less risk of scarring that you get with PRK, but there still is the (small) risk of flap detachment down the road with LASIK. From what I have seen waivers are readily available as long as...

    Classes for TPS?

Sounds good, I'll pass up taking multi then and worry about it when the time comes. Thanks for the advice everyone.

    Classes for TPS?

So it's basically a function of, if you don't come in with it, it isn't going to happen? Sounds like TPS probably wouldn't be in the cards for me then.
  21. Hopeful Hoya

    Classes for TPS?

Yeah sounds like trying to get the courses in next semester will be a real pain (already need to take 4 to graduate so taking another 1 or 2 at GW would be a huge load). Maybe if I'm so inclined I can try to whittle away at the physics requirement by taking one next summer before OCS but...

  23. Hopeful Hoya

    Classes for TPS?

Yeah I knew a lot of it was timing driven, just wasn't sure if taking multi would seriously help. Can't really take physics as Georgetown has a tiny department and not a lot of classes (i.e. you can only take 101 in the Fall and 102 in the spring).

    Classes for TPS?

...Before I start, I know the ridiculousness of asking that now when I don't even have a PQ and PRO-Y yet... IF (I realize this is a big if), I get my PQ, get my PRO-Y and FINSEL, make it through OCS, make it through IFS, etc. etc. etc. all the way through finishing my first fleet tour, TPS...

    Night Vision

I'm 5 months out and completely fine. Doc has said I have a little dryness (believe I sleep with my eyes open a bit), but I only really notice it if I've had a couple drinks the night before and I'm dehydrated. Usually after a shower and a bottle of water I'm good to go, or worst case I put some...

Nov-Dec 2015 Pilot NFO Rolling Board

You only get the full flight physical before the Board if you're applying for Marines. If you're going Navy they send you to MEPS for a physical that determines if you are fit for commissioning only, and then you get the full flight work-up your first (or second?) week at OCS.

Not a technical question - Officer Academic Degree plan

Sir, how far out can you complete the ADCP? Could I do it in November when I preregister for my spring classes (and my Dean basically says barring a failure I will graduate), or do I need to wait until my classes from this semester are completed and show up on my transcript?
  28. Hopeful Hoya

    Eye Surgery?

Exactly, I'm currently in month 5 of a 6 month wait after having LASIK. Minimums for SNA are 20/40, don't get LASIK unless you're definitely over the limit.

NEWS Russia building barracks at Syrian airport

Seems that the initial reports were incorrect: while it was a Syrian -29 that spiked the -16s, the aircraft that busted the border were a Russian SU-30 and SU-24. http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/news_123392.htm

NEWS Russia building barracks at Syrian airport

Could also potentially be Russian, their fighter/attack jets have apparently been shadowing the "humanitarian" cargo flights down, transponder off, to travel incognito. So there could be -29s there hidden from view that we don't know about.

Just a warning: this is a very rough draft, so please be somewhat gentle with your feedback. :D Since a young age, I have wanted to follow in my Grandfather's footsteps and become a naval officer. What most attracts me to the Navy as a whole is that, early on in your career, you are expected to...

    NEWS USS Gabby Gifford

One who resigned in disgrace after committing a crime and another who almost single-handedly began American isolationism and put the world on the path to WW2. As much as people hate President Obama I don't think you can really compare him to either. ;)

I take the ASTB in a week...

Not much you can do, it basically tests raw ability. Focus on doing the emergency procedures correctly and quickly, and concentrate on the 2D tracking. Otherwise I would focus on studying the other sections, you probably have a better change of improving your scores there.

    Little known / experimental aircraft

The pole was only meant to work if the orbiter jettisoned the SRBs and ET, and was flown into a nice, gentile glide at ~200 knots. Even if you managed to get into the envelope after a launch failure (unlikely), you would still have to slide down the pole and pray that you have enough clearance...

NEWS Russia building barracks at Syrian airport

Seeing as that jives with what info has been coming out from US officials, and the fact that the SU-30s were originally reported by British intelligence analysts using US commercial satellite data I would be fairly confident that it's true. Even if the image itself is faked the aircraft line up...

    October-ish 2015 Pilot/NFO Rolling Board

    October-ish 2015 Pilot/NFO Rolling Board

The most important sections for your PFAR score are math, spatial appreciation (UAV) and the aeronautical history/knowledge section. I don't think buying a flight sim is really worth it unless you are horribly uncoordinated; the performance based section is very different from a normal flight...

PRK is only a 6 month wait until you can go to MEPS, and no you can submit your package up to 6 months before your graduation date as long as your dean signs off on a degree completion plan (basically stating it is feasible for you to complete your degree in the next 6 months. I can't go to...

    What NRC considers competitive

I'm not super concerned at this point, just trying to plan for any contingencies. So I guess the gist of this is with a 3.5 and a non-tech major I am not competitive for Intel/IW, correct?
  46. Hopeful Hoya

    What NRC considers competitive

I've been reading up on Intel stuff the past few days, as I'm considering backups to SNA/SNFO should something pop up at MEPS. Right now I'm looking at SWO and Intel.
