Is MS Flight Sim worth it for T-6B?

Yes I do play the A-10 mostly, and I dabble in the F-15C. Luckily DCS is currently working on making a F-18, but if I had to guess, current SNA/SNFO applicants probably have a better chance of flying a real F-18 before the DCS one is released.

Is MS Flight Sim worth it for T-6B?

I second DCS, it is a blast. Nothing more fun than pinging away at T-90s and SA-13s with MAVs and LGBs. :D

    Netflix recommendations?

In a similar vein as Man in the High Castle, I got into The Americans over the summer and it is excellent (period early 80s show about deep cover Soviet agents living in the US, think Mad Men meets James Bond).

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery...part DEUX

I agree that the F-35 is ugly as sin, but there were some pretty ugly designs prior to FBW (F-8 Crusader for instance). Also I think the F-22, the Hornet/Rhino and Viper are awesome looking despite their computer driven controls.

    16 years later... 800,000th post!

Wow, I had no idea such a benign post would have such significance. I feel extremely honored to get to be such a small part of this incredibly special site. :) Here's to reaching 1,000,000 and many more!

    Get Lasik/PRK ASAP?

Glad to hear everything is going well! It really is a life changing procedure, I'm over 3 months into mine and it still amazes me every day not having to worry about glasses/contacts.

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

If you take just the OAR, you must take the rest of the ASTB tests within 90 days IIRC, otherwise you will need to retake the whole test.

The Doctor is in! Ask a Flight Surgeon!

Thank you for the advice sir, will just try not to worry about it until MEPS since it does not sound like there is much I can do (aside from not getting another concussion of course).
  9. Hopeful Hoya

The Doctor is in! Ask a Flight Surgeon!

Thank you for the advice sir, will do all of that. Out of curiosity, are the tests similar to the ImpactTest (i.e. measures response time and memory), or are they more in-depth Navy-specific tests?
  10. Hopeful Hoya

The Doctor is in! Ask a Flight Surgeon!

Hey R/, I'm in the process of running down some medical documentation to prepare for MEPS and I had a question: I have had 3 concussions: one in 2004 when I was 10 (LOC of 5 mins and amnesia of ~30mins), one in 2008 (no LOC or amnesia) and 2010 (no LOC or amnesia). I suffer no ongoing effects...

    Get Lasik/PRK ASAP?

Agreed, research the machine they use and make sure it is close to cutting edge, and make sure to ask how often they check and calibrate it.

OCS Seeking opinions: Decline AF OTS commission for Navy OCS?

Just saying, coming on here and sh*ting on service of any type will probably not go over well, especially since you appear to be a non-prior civilian.
  13. Hopeful Hoya

    Get Lasik/PRK ASAP?

^Exactly. It's a scan they do to create a "map" of your eyes so they can refine the laser application even more. The TLC I went to did it both for LASIK and PRK so you should have the option either way.

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

What I did was read through this thread and the ASTB-E Impressions one and downloaded all the gouge that everyone posted, IMO I think the stuff on here is more useful than the Accerpted Inc book (if that was the one you bought). I would also recommend buying the Barron's book because it has 2...

    Get Lasik/PRK ASAP?

Do the LASIK, it's unbelievable. I was seeing 20/15 the next day and basically had no pain/dryness. 3 months out I'm still 20/20 on a crappy day and 20/15 on a good day. Make sure to do it right and go to a good doc who has done a lot of surgeries and do the wavefront scans. Yeah it'll cost...

    October-ish 2015 Pilot/NFO Rolling Board

The gist of it is you can't get cleared by MEPS (or even go to MEPS) until you get your 6-month post op done. If you got yours done in late January, you should get your 6-month checkup done if you haven't already, and contact your recruiter to schedule your appointment at MEPS soon. Barring any...

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

I did not finish on Math and Mechanics (probably only had 2-3 questions left each time), and I got a 70. There's a definite balance between getting them right and working quickly but it all depends.
  18. Hopeful Hoya

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Just two tips for the above if anyone is studying, perfect numbers you just have to memorize, the first four are 6, 28, 496, and 8128. For the fractions, you shouldn't need to do long division, just multiply the top and bottom of each fraction to get a common denominator, and then it should be...

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Barron's is a good start, I would recommend looking up more advanced topics on the web such as purplemath.com or Kahn Academy. Focus on basic log rules and probability especially. I would also recommend reading through this thread and the ASTB-E thread as well if you haven't already. I did this...

    NOSC Shooting

Thoughts and prayers for all of the victims. Also scary to think that even though both of these recent attackers posted stuff online before the attacks, it was not picked up ahead of time. Just imagine what it will be like when one of these guys grows half a brain and realizes that probably...

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

Taking flight lessons would be a huge waste of time and money. PFAR is heavily weighted on Math, Aviation History, and UAV. Do well on those parts, as well as the emergency procedures, and you will be fine.

    Final Select Purgatory

And I would take the challenge of landing on the boat over getting to use a nice cushy 13,000ft runway any day ;)

    October-ish 2015 Pilot/NFO Rolling Board

Nope, had Lasik in mid-May so playing the waiting game until November for MEPS. In the meantime praying that my eyes don't crap out staring at a computer for 14 hours a day at work  Also, congrats on the Pro-Y!!

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

^I agree, it makes sense to at lease try since you have to wait 90 days to re-take the test and it's extremely likely there will be a board during that timeframe.

    foreflight military for intl flying

Just curious, do you guys notice a greater amount of aviators flying with electronic charts or an iPad strapped to their knees vs. a traditional kneeboard? The push for paperless cockpits seems to be pretty prevalent in the commercial community so just wondering if it's the same in the mil...

    ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

Use these to practice. Once you understand the logic it's not too difficult. You are presented with a standard map (North is always up), which has an arrow pointing it showing your direction of flight, and a "camera view" of what the UAV is seeing. The camera view will show 4 parking lots. The...

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

That's exactly what I did and it was extremely helpful. Accuracy is the key but it also tests your reaction time so the compass definitely helped me identify the lots quicker.
  29. Hopeful Hoya

    ASTB - Prep/Study Guide feedback

Nope you're allowed to use it on the test. They give you scratch paper and pencils so I just drew mine before I started the UAV portion.

    ASTB Thank you AW

I'll just leave this here (basically rules #1 and #2 on this site).

OCS Seeking opinions: Decline AF OTS commission for Navy OCS?

You have to commission before your 27th birthday for pilot, so you should be OK as long as you get LASIK within the next few months. You just have to make your own decision as to whether the risk is worth it or not. If you turn down the AF that door is effectively shut for you, so at that point...

    ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

Reading through the thread is a good place to start, definitely helped me focus on a few things I otherwise would have totally missed (knowing what 4 is in binary, for example, which was a question I got on the test). For me, it was doing as many practice problems as I could find (and redoing...

  34. Hopeful Hoya

    Final Select Purgatory

From our standpoint it is pretty much completely random, and you have to remember that the people on AW are an extremely small sample of the number of people waiting to get a FS and go to OCS. So really it would be a waste of time and brainpower trying to solve the puzzle. Instead, focus on the...

Sisterhood of the Traveling (ASTB) Book?

Honestly I thought the Accepted book wasn't really worth it. Essentially everything in it is available online, and there weren't enough practice questions to make it worth it just for that. If I was doing it again, I would focus solely on the online stuff, especially since you can cover some of...

    Becoming A Naval Aviator?

The only people who are really qualified to answer that are at the Navy Aeromedical Medical Institute (NAMI). They are the ones who give you the final go/no-go for your physical qualification for aviation programs. Search for and read the NAMI waiver guide to see what conditions you had and if...

Any online practice test for ASTB/OAR?

There's a full test plus gouge here: http://www.nelnetsolutions.com/pdf/free/mastermilitaryflight.pdf Note: this is from the previous version of the ASTB so you do not need to do the spatial appreciation questions (search this site for info on the new UAV setup).

Sisterhood of the Traveling (ASTB) Book?

@Unimarobj that's fine with me, as long as it's ok with @adrenalinerush Like I told him over PM, I'm in NYC for the summer working and don't have the books with me, but I'm going to see if I can have my parents ship them.

    ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

The only scores that count are the most recent ones. If you have a 60 7/7/7 I would submit with that because those are pretty competitive scores.
  40. Hopeful Hoya

    ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

Unless you take the ASTB portion within a certain amount of time after your OAR exam (I believe it is 90 days), then no, you would have to take the whole thing over again.

    ASTB - Prep/Study Guide feedback

These are what I used. Get your reaction times down under 2 seconds. I also drew a compass on a sheet of paper with the parking lots on it, and then I would rotate it to fit the map shown so I was able to identify the correct lot almost instantly.

Changes to retirement passes first hurdle.

It's funny, that's almost exactly how I feel. 1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

I agree, that looks pretty hairy. I had 2 or 3 log questions on my test and I do not recall any of them being as difficult as that question, and I managed to find the answers without too much hassle in a few minutes. I would be surprised if you encountered something like that on the real test...

Sisterhood of the Traveling (ASTB) Book?

I'm cleaning out my room and such in preparation for moving away for the summer, and I have two brand new, never been written in, ASTB books that I used to prepare for me test. NEWS This is US Navy... We Fly?

Poor phrasing on my part. By escalate, I meant that by having assets operating in a contested environment, there's a chance that something happens (unintentional bumping as Brett said or a bad intercept al la the Hainan Incident) that sends us past the stage of chest thumping or saber rattling...
