    UPT AND API Question

Isnt the final decision up to the Bob’s anyways? I mean, a stud gets awesome grades and would be a good fit in jets, but when stuff like quality spread, timing, etc, comes into play, how much say does the IP really have? (yes I know they make recommendations for or against a stud and a...

    Enlisted to USNA

Unless the process has changed, you don’t interview with a BGO. I interviewed with my Senior Chief, Master Chief, then the Skipper.

    Enlisted to USNA

I’m pretty sure they don’t fill every slot to the academy that is set aside for prior enlisted, some that apply and get accepted get routed though NAPS first. They look at the ‘whole person’ concept, so the fact that you’ve taken classes on your own, and I assume you’ll get good...

    IP Basic and PCS

It sounds like you got it figured out but I’d recommend getting real familiar with the JTR. For future reference if you’re trying to do something and ‘business rules’ aren’t allowing you to, but the JTR says it’s ok, the JTR takes precedence. Business rules conflicting with the JTR is...

    Shave chit affecting flight status?

Fine, you get your beard. You also get high necked collars, bow ties, 100% wool uniforms, and a gazillion button double breasted jackets to go along with it.

    Shave chit affecting flight status?

The quote is accurate in both directions.

    Shave chit affecting flight status?

I’m not saying the change of the medical beard policy is smart, or a good idea. I do think that holding to a policy of no beards for the masses is good. Reference my previous post as to why.

    Shave chit affecting flight status?

I mean, why have any uniform rules? You wanna wear a tutu and flip flops in the office, but you’re the best damn yeoman out there, fuck it right? Dress codes and grooming standards are a good thing.

    Shave chit affecting flight status?

Yeah, we aren’t other countries. Like I said, I’m a crotchety old fuck and I think it’s a good policy. I don’t think a change for guys with skin issues is a good change though.

    Shave chit affecting flight status?

I’ll be the crotchety old fuck that says it. The variability of dudes and how they can grow beards, I’m glad we have a policy that keeps people from growing one. Guys that grow patchy, thin beards, or scraggly, or whatever, how do you regulate that? It looks like shit and I can guarantee if...

    Adios Bluberries

Tomorrow they are officially gone. I had to buy a pair in 2009 for a command wide inspection. I wore them once for that inspection and never again. Good riddance! https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.military.com/daily-news/2019/09/29/navy-says-goodbye-blueberry-camouflage-uniform.html/amp

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

Yeah, and the measurements are so dependent on the person doing the measurements. About a year before I went to primary they were still doing fit checks for people who were close but when I went through they had stopped doing it. I can see the argument both ways, but if someone is out by on a...

    California Love

Can’t speak to the living trust, but California does have some specific rules on their weapons. Being military on PCS orders means you don’t have to register them upon moving in. If you get out of the military or switch to SELRES (gray area) and stay in California, you do have to register. If...

Useless aviation knowledges/Helo NATOPS Potpourri for $200 Alex

The H-60 airframe can handle doing rolls, it’s just pikot skill in rolling a helicopter that limits it. Beyond 60 AOB is gets real squirrrely. No personal experience going past 60, of course. Smiles!

Useless aviation knowledges/Helo NATOPS Potpourri for $200 Alex

Set thrust to N1 and let it be. I have no clue wtf the actual engine thrust is, but the N1 from the chart gets me airborne!

    Transition to FTS

One thing to keep in mind for FTS these days. Aviation is hurting for bodies in the flying squadrons. That coupled with the shifting screen groups is driving promotion to O-5 waaaay down for FTS pilots. Guys are being hung onto for the squadron manning and not having their highwater FITREP when...

LCDR Attrition at 20 Years Question

Oh yeah, the term is ‘shiny penny’. Once these dudes become the chosen ones, usually in their first tour or shortly thereafter, they are fast tracked. Getting selected for each successive rank one or two years early is the norm. I worked for a Colonel a few years ago that took over an ops...

LCDR Attrition at 20 Years Question

I don’t think it’s the O-4 board, it’s the O-5 board where the timing will really hurt them.
  26. insanebikerboy

LCDR Attrition at 20 Years Question

Is that a Navy rule? Because I know some 19 year O-6s in the Air Force. They selected two years early, twice.
  27. insanebikerboy

LCDR Attrition at 20 Years Question

The forecast when you pin on O-4 is what you said. Reality is that when the Bubba list comes out each December, guys are getting sucked up. I don’t personally know any dudes sucked up two zones but with how wide the net is being cast, it’s inevitable.
  28. insanebikerboy

LCDR Attrition at 20 Years Question

Yeah, what’s the phrase, sustained superior timing? I know a few really solid guys that are looking at terminal O-4 now because they got looked at early.
  29. insanebikerboy

    Transition to FTS

You aren’t eliminated by default. The boards and communities are small though, so an individual is playing the odds to decline the offer with the expectation of getting selected again. I know one guy who picked up HSC FTS, turned it down, switched to VT SELRES, and I’m pretty sure he’s a VT FTS...

LCDR Attrition at 20 Years Question

As a SELRES you can ask for waivers to stay beyond the 20 year mark as an O-4. From the couple of guys I’ve seen that did that, they weren’t dirtbags and they got the command to agree. I’d say if you were a non-existent or pain in the ass SELRES, it might be tougher. In my entire sample size...

    AMEX Platinum

Best part of the Amex travel bennies, just flew from London to Dallas and the Centurion Lounge has a spa and showers. The DFW Centurion Lounge is awesome, even though it’s usually pretty busy. OCS Stuck at OTCN, disqualified from aviation and forced to go SWO or to DOR

Need more info, why are you being told you can’t fly? Is it a hard down or do you have options with other services? Personally, if I were in your shoes I’d probably take my ball and go home. You signed up to fly and now you can’t, and you haven’t even commissioned, so you don’t owe Uncle Sam...

Way too early FY20 O4 Board results

I can’t speak to these results but on the O-5 board, not all HSC SWTI types got the asterisk. I personally know two guys who were identical, they had masters, SWTI, JPME, and in a staff tour and one got an asterisk and the other didn’t.

USN The Slow Death Of The Carrier Air Wing - Or a CSAR Threadjack

I'm trying to avoid a dick measuring contest here, but I've been involved with actually creating OPLANs and I can tell you that the PR aspect is one of the most important to the COCOMs. Anecdotally, I've personally seen an entire AOR's operations come to a halt because there wasn't a clear...

Are individual awards getting watered down (ie a NAM for a Det)?

Crew from 84 in Iraq got DFCs for shooting a bunch of fools out of a tree during a hot extract.

Are individual awards getting watered down (ie a NAM for a Det)?

My grandfather got a DFC in Korea for that very thing, he was the rear gunner on an A-26. I have his personal notebook of his flights in Korea. Along with the citation, it sounds like it was a ‘sporty’ night for that crew.

Stand by for high seas, heavy rolls in NSW and JAGC

Publicly humiliate? No. Be honest in communication? Yes. If a CO was here one day and then gone the next, the rest of the command deserves to know why. I don't agree with finding out from the cover of Navy Times, but a lot of feedback from the lower ranks is lack of transparency on what is...

Stand by for high seas, heavy rolls in NSW and JAGC

I've seen this firsthand. CO was allowed to have a change of command about 3 months early. Everyone knew he was "fired" but since he had an actual CoC, he wasn't technically "fired".

CAB doesn’t equal CAR. I know Navy guys who were assigned to Army units on IA that received the CAB but big Navy said no to converting it to a CAR. Policy now is IDF to a base doesn’t get the CAR awarded, you have to fight back. Gone are the days of an entire FOB getting it just because they...
