Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

I’m pretty sure he means why are they using it at all? I can’t stand it in a squadron, just call it ‘ops’, ‘maintenance’, etc. It’s a squadron, not a staff.

Crossing the finish line... running, walking or crawling... (Reserve Retirement Process)

AGR is more like a multi-year MOB, with the goal of getting 20 years active. The difference is you can revert to SELRES in between the AGR stints.

Still fairly accurate. Lot of ASE push lately to get it up to speed across all services as well.

    FY-20 active O-5 results

Stats are posted. 1310 selected at 27% for above zone, 64% in zone, and 1320 at 20% AZ and 45% IZ (ouch). Highest AZ in recent memory. https://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/boards/activedutyofficer/05line/Documents/FY20_AO5L_STATS.pdf

    FY-20 active O-5 results

I’m pretty sure that if a note about ‘merit’ appears on any fitrep beyond this very next one, the reporting senior is writing fitreps incorrectly.

    FY-20 active O-5 results

I found that interesting too, as several HSC CO-selects aren’t on the ‘merit’ list. I guess it’s the difference between the cool kids and the really cool kids.

NEWS USAF Fighter And Bomber Crews Get Modified M4 Rifles That Fit Under Ejection Seats

A team guy jumped on the helo with two crossed shotguns, two pistols, and a tomahawk strapped to his belt. No armor, no helmet, just his radio and a baseball hat. He wasn’t exactly small either, so he would probably be the scariest dude you could imagine kicking in your door.

NEWS USAF Fighter And Bomber Crews Get Modified M4 Rifles That Fit Under Ejection Seats

Per instruction you are required to qualify before a deployment in which you are expected to handle firearms. If you don’t qualify, you aren’t allowed to carry your weapon. You also must qualify on each type, pistol, rifle, and/or shotgun. So if you want to carry two pump shotguns in an X across...

    Aircraft selection

I get your point, but the idea of a missile that size chasing me down is sorta nuts. But, tbh, if I get shot down by a SA-2 in my helo, it really was just my time to go.

Yeah, when the Angry Telephone Pole (a.k.a, SA-2) comes flying at you, I have to imagine it'll make some folks rethink their life choices.

    Aircraft selection

There is 100% nothing wrong with a person wanting to fly a platform that has higher likelihood of engaging with and killing the enemy, and actively seeking out that platform. Just because you aren't comfortable with it doesn't mean others also must feel that same way.

Rand study on USAF pilot retention

"Loss of confidence" comes to mind as the reason why. Someone getting an early PCS or even a "chance to retire" isn't unheard of. It's obviously not blatant misconduct, but at some point the buck needs to stop and letting folks with that much responsibility just shrug their shoulders and...

Or, they could've made it super freaking simple and installed it on a gooseneck mount. To be honest though, figure-8 patterns with an up-slung FLIR isn't rocket science, it just means you have to actually think about the pattern instead of just flying a big ass circle.

Should I stay or should I go? Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love HSC.

HSC overland is a stop-gap until the Army or Air Force can show up. Expeditionary and CVW HSC is not manned, trained, nor equipped to perform more than a few days in the overland environment. Those few days of overland work are almost entirely supported from the boat. For any HSC folks here...

    Air Force to Navy?

If you go FTS aviation you will get at least one tour in a flying squadron. Depending on your rank when you switch, you have a good chance of getting at least two flying tours, maybe three. That said, everyone will eventually have to do a non-flying job and yeah, NOSC admin is one of them...

    Air Force to Navy?

Going AF to Navy active duty isn't as common and is a bit more difficult, mainly due to the career progression the Navy tries to force everyone into. Going active AF to reserve Navy is more likely and I've known guys who've done just that. You could then apply for the FTS program in the Navy...

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

It's becoming more common in reg-AF than it used to be. The IST board is currently accepting 100% of qualified applicants for a transfer over. My first tour was HS and while I could have been oblivious, I don't ever recall FLM concerns. In the 2008/9 timeframe, our bigger concern was flight hour budget. We had guys that had to use the sim to make their annual mins.

This was my experience in 1999, so times have probably changed. That said, I got in some trouble in high school, after I had turned 18. I got it dismissed, and even had the record expunged. Except for certain federal agencies who can access it regardless of being expunged or not, a normal employer cannot see or find out about expungements. Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

The Navy used to only get bravos for training up until a few years ago. A surge of fin failures made them reevaluate and now they won't issue them anymore. I also haven't seen/heard of a Quebec being shot in the Navy, they tend to give us real warheads.

What are the current NVD's for helos?

In the F/H the boxes on the lower console were in the exact same position in each aircraft. Annoyingly, it seems like in the S they are just randomly bolted in, so each helo has a completely different layout so you have to look down a lot more.
  49. insanebikerboy

What are the current NVD's for helos?

In the 60F we’d turn the lights on the upper and lower consoles completely off and just count/remember where stuff was at. I still count out with my fingers the buttons on the cdu even though the 60H is NVD compatible.
