    Milton vs. P'Cola

Hey bch, This is driving me nuts. When I was in milton, there was a sports bar that had 25 cent wings on Tuesdays. Do you know the name of that place? It's on the "main strip" with all the other establishments. I didn't find that place until about half way through...wish I knew about it...

    Tips on Navy OCS???

This statement is really only true for the PRT. Everybody has to run the same pace in formation. Fall out, and you're going to catch hell regardless of age. When someone touches their face and you're all doing pushups in the grass, you'll all be expected to push, regardless of age. OCS was...

    O1e?

Was your husband prior enlisted? They pay you E-5 at OCS, and if he wasn't, then naturally, he's not going to get O-1E. For instance, I hit my 2 year mark this september (when I started OCS) but won't pick up O-2 until December.

    Milton vs. P'Cola

Milton pretty much blows (that's where they moved AMO school, yay). The way I look at it, you'll drive 35 minutes to whiting because you HAVE to, but if you live in the Milton/Pace area, driving 40 minutes to go to outback on the weekend becomes a chore.
  7. Thisguy

    O1e?

It should. It does for Navy OCS, and that'll be a nice bonus on the BAH side.

Well, whoever told you needs to be punched in the mouth. Ok, that may be a little harsh, but there are few things I hate more than bad gouge. http://www.staynavy.navy.mil/counselors_resources/files/Officer_Pilot.doc Special pay/bonuses. Naval aviation officers receive aviation career...

Bad News for people applying for slots

OK, I know for a fact that none of our LT pilots get that bonus after the 5 year mark. Also, the incentive to stay is that if they re-up, they will pay you the bonus AFTER your obligation is up. The Navy already has you by the nuts and they're not going to pay you more during your initial...

    Early OCS

No. All Officer Candidates at Navy OCS hold a Bachelor's degree. It should be noted that BDCP is a better deal than PLC, because PLC only pays you while you're at quantico, BDCP will pay you 24/36 months prior to OCS depending on what your degree is in.

    Transferring Schools?

Let's put it this way, if Riddle is going to cost you 70 Gs for 2 years, and Razorback U. is going to cost you 5 grand a year. Why not spend 2 years there to get a technical degree? It'll be a lot cheaper, a 3.1 in a tech degree isn't bad, and a technical degree will open more doors down the road.

Bad News for people applying for slots

You won't see that extention bonus until year 10 or so (when your commitment is up) the Navy isn't going to give you a bonus when you're already obligated. I think you were looking at the NUKE charts. Those guys get 20g/yr if they re-up after a 5 year commitment.

    BDCP vs. Normal OCS

Another huge difference between the two is that if you DOR as a normal OCS applicant, you'll simply separate from the service. If you DOR as a BDCP applicant, you'll be sent to boot camp as an E-2. Needless to day, BDCP guys usually don't DOR.
  16. Thisguy

    Transferring Schools?

Just curious about why your GPA would dip from 3.7 to 3.1 by going from Riddle to Arkansas. Also, why not finish a technical degree at Arkansas? Is it not offered? Also, another thing to look for, is that most universities require that your last 60 credits (4 semesters) be taken there in...

Bad News for people applying for slots

If this is in fact that case, here's the logic behind it. Better to pay the BDCP folks E-3 pay and allowance than to pay O-1 pay and allowance to a bunch of stash Ensigns who are waiting to get through the pipeline. I know, I know, why not roll the direct guys back, and let the BDCP guys...

    Old guys and OCS

Your four years of active duty would mainly help you with the aviation fields, because they waive up to 48 months of active duty to get under the limit. I don't think you can be say, 37 with 4 years and be able to get under that 35 year limit. That sounds like a pretty hard cap. I'm a little...

Bad News for people applying for slots

That's all well and good, but that sounds strictly for the surface community. I think Sub, Pilot and NFO JO jobs are safe, because they involve Nuclear Power School (guys with engineering degrees have a tough time there) and Flight School. Also, what kind of ships will the E8/E9 be the CO of...

Joke or not, (as someone from upstate NY) I don't like how she ran for office in NY (as opposed to Illinois or Ark). That was strictly an ego move.
  22. Thisguy

How long until we're officially "in"?

You're right about the cutoff. You have to be commissioned by the time you're 27 if you're not prior. I think it's 29 for NFOs. The max age limit to be an officer is 35, however, other programs (such as NUPOC) have their own deadline as well.

Could I make it through OCS?

Not a problem. OCS is actually a very inspirational and motivational place. Even though our Class Drill Instructor was destroying us, by the 6th week, I was ready to run through a brick wall for him. Good luck on whatever you decide.
  25. Thisguy

Could I make it through OCS?

Well, let me put it this way. I know I didn't rush a frat in college mainly because I knew I didn't feel like taking crap from a guy one year older who just pledged last year. That must be what you felt like in the corps. However, it may be easier to catch hell from guys who are much older...

    Doing 20

There's also the REDUX plan, but that really isn't a good deal unless you can make it to 30, here's why: At the 15 year mark, you can sign an agreement saying you'll do 20, and receive a $30,000 bonus. However, your retirement will be 40% after 20, with each additional year adding 3.5%...

Nothing supposedly about it. After 20 years, you get 50% of your base pay (no allowances or special pays). With each year after that tacking on 2.5% for a maximum of 75% after 30 years. As for gov't pensions being higher, what are you comparing to? You can't get jack after 20 years in the...

Could I make it through OCS?

yeah, OCS is just 13 weeks, though it seems a lot longer. I know what you mean about not being able to focus on your college work. At OCS you won't have to deal with that, because you'll be done with school. Though, for 13 weeks, you will live and breathe OCS (minus liberty of course). If...

    Doing 20

About the only way you can be denied LT is if you take a crap on your skipper's desk, or try to maliciously kill someone. LTJG and LT are automatic, especially in aviation, because you won't hit the fleet until you're a JG. You go up for LCDR at the 10 year point.
  32. Thisguy

    Doing 20

I wouldn't worry about that. Numbers can change drastically between now and then, but I'm pretty sure more than 1 in 3 make LCDR. MSU's example is a good one, except if you get passed over twice now, you aren't "encouraged", you're done. I know alot of people are driven by the 1/2 pay after...

    Pro Rec Non-Select

The "S" stands for "student". You're not an NFO or a Naval Aviator until you get your wings. Also, if you get asked what your designator is at OCS, you better reply "Student Naval Flight Officer" or "Student Naval Aviator".
  35. Thisguy

    Student loan questions?

They sure do, I cashed in on it, however one of the criteria is that you were on active duty between from Sept 11, 2001-June 30, 2004, so hurry up and go to OCS so you'll be considered active duty!!! :icon_tong

Does it really take up to 8 months?

On the surface it doesn't make sense. However, the Navy would rather bump people in BDCP back rather than commission a lot of people, only to have the training pipelines full, so you'll have a bunch of stash ensigns. O-1 pay is more than E-3, so in a sense, the navy is cutting their losses.

    Band of Brothers

We were soldiers (the book) While we're on the subject, a good movie (we were soldiers) is an even better book. The movie only covers half the book, as the latter half, Gen. Moore wasn't involved in the battle. You'll also notice that the movie is a little "Hollywooded" up. The climax of the...

Does it really take up to 8 months?

Designator counts. Since SNFO/SNA is so popular, they're not going to send an entire class of 50 through, all one designator. Supply is currently over end strength in the JO ranks (so I've heard), so if there's a lot of people applying supply, that may lengthen the wait.

    Usna Or Nrotc?

...PENN STATE Ha, now we're going to get some ND fans on here saying "a win is a win" :) ND will never join a conference, because their ego is way too big, and they better start winning more ballgames or I hear the Notre Dame Broadcasting Company (NBC) won't re-up the contract.

Boss, Flight intstructor at the rag is pretty common. I don't know the lowdown on shore duty for pilots. When not on deployment, you basically do what you do on deployment: Fly! Except your at home, and it's not nearly as intense as if you were on the carrier (assuming you get a carrier...

That's pretty good. Try running after doing situps and pushups, because that's what the real PRT will be like. I wouldn't sweat it, because 10:30 is excellent low, which is the min. passing. You'll improve at OCS.
