Anymouse: What I would change about AW if I could....

Rather than arging over exactly who can post a sea story, why not just let the community self-correct it? We do have the rep point system. It may be difficult to determine just which pins qualify one to have "sea stories", but we can all tell what's a sea story and what isn't. And if I post...

Anymouse: What I would change about AW if I could....

The red "last page" box in the "last post" column is broken on the main/home page: http://www.airwarriors.com/cmps_index.php But it works on the "New Posts" list. Edit: Whoa...and that teaches me to reply to a page 1 post.

    Marine OCS Preparation

A question - how did you guys maintain the Camelbaks? They seem to be more difficult to refill, and I need to dry or refrigerate mine to keep crud from growing in them.

    Broken but cleared to return

Love it. I was standing at the Delta counter hobbling home (on crutches, seabag on my back, with a cover tan). Agent asks me if I'd like an earlier flight home. "This candidate - er - I would appreciate it, ma'm." She just shakes her head.

    Only the Air Force.....

Ya, you see, posting that on the internet is not a sign of having a sense of humor. It's a sign of having no shame.

    MAV vs UAV

Also note that it's a product built by people who have been forced out of the manned fighter business due to the slow consolidation of acquisitions programs. There just isn't room for 3 or more fighter contractors, these days. Cheaper UCAV's means more players get a shot at the pie. However...

    Virtual Blue Angels video

Actually, it reminded me of another "virtual" unit http://www.usvn.net/ Face it, post a link about guys pretending to do something on a board where the real deal hangs out, and be prepared for ridicule. At least you didn't go ahead and post an airsoft video on lightfighter.net or another site...

Typical Miles Per Week to Max

Walsh wasn't talking about danger, but just physical difficulty. That first hump goes over Da Nang and a few other fun hills east of of Engineer road. The later ones are just long, and since they're half at night, are slower.

    Old Corps

I had the honor of meeting an Iwo Marine, then a Captain, at his daughter's AF commissioning ceremony. He quickly stole the spotlight at the reception, even with a General present. That generation is full of fine gentlemen.

    Oar

According to the NOMI brief, only the first half (math/verbal/mech comprehension) counts toward your OAR. You could be unable to distinguish a jet from a propeller and still be able to ace the OAR. I have heard that you can take only the first half, but I've also heard of people having to take...

    Gmaps Pedometer

Lots of guys have reported success taping the sensor under their insole. Nike also makes a shoelace carrier for the sensor for non Nike+ shoes. I'd be all over it if I didn't already have a polar kit that does the same thing. Now if it read my HRM....I might consider it.

    Marine Gouge

cool. looks good. Needs some formatting cleanup; wiki's not as readable as properly done html. Still, lots easier than ssh'ing and wading through html gobbleygook. I promise it's on my to-do list.....after PT.

    TBS O-Course Vid

I do sometimes wish I had an O-course to run around on. Jungle gym for grown-ups indeed. I'm tempted to do so on the scaffolding around the city but it's hard finding a deserted one where I won't clock anyone in the head. Guess I'll have to get up earlier.

Video of V-22 debut at Farnborough

That's William Lind's page. From what I've heard he's written some outrageous stuff lately that hasn't jived with combat experience. Kinda like Hackworth in his later years. It is bloody obvious from the bio that Boyd had a personality cult.
  25. mmx1

Video of V-22 debut at Farnborough

First of all, it's Col. Wyly. Second of all, let's not buy Boyd's pomp hook line, and sinker. Coram is very clear that while Boyd was brilliant, he was also an arrogant jerkhole, as were many of his groupies. Hell, they called themselves the "acolytes". Walking around convinced that you're...

    Humorous video #421

Uh....why? Is there a regulation or order mandating tucked in shirts? I don't plan on showing up sporting pastel jackets Miami Vice style, but.....you'd expect a bit more sense than that. Maybe I'm assuming too much.

    Marine OCS Preparation

Sucks being the short end, too. My favorite hump was when we took a rest stop and resumed in the reverse direction, so that we were at the front. Complete change.
  28. mmx1

Video of V-22 debut at Farnborough

It's the OODA loop business. Boyd had two major innovations. First was his E-M theory which codified aerial combat in a very technical way. The second was a much more abstract theory about decision making. It's the latter that Wyly brought to the Marine Corps...

    Marine Gouge

Cool; I've been tossing around the idea of putting up a gouge wiki. Actually, that would be a good place for me to put my ASTB study guide. www.columbia.edu/~mmx1/astb. Have realized that it might not be a good idea to have it associated with me once I get commissioned.

Video of V-22 debut at Farnborough

Point is that if you don't have you're not confident enough to defend what you say without ducking and running for the cover of "well, Admiral So and so told me", you look like a tool. Brett - hate to break it to you, but Condi's got the yellow fever.
  33. mmx1

Video of V-22 debut at Farnborough

One tilts back and the other tilts forward. Bingo, yaw. Didn't know until recently that the entire rotor disk of a helicopter could be tilted independently of the aircraft. That's how the -46 yaw's; one disc tilts port, the other starboard, and you get torque around the yaw axis.

    Marine OCS Preparation

They probably got complacent and thought they didn't need to learn a good lock. And when learning the ropes, they probably got away with it as their arms were fresh. After running the O-course, however, is a whole nother story. You probably don't even need to be able to do a single pullup to...

Video of V-22 debut at Farnborough

All hysterics aside, there was indeed mechanical trouble with one of the V-22's on the trans-Atlantic flight. The Atlantic crossing was supposed to be a big deal. Can't recall what the remedy was; I already tossed the paper.

    Marines Want Spaceplane

WAG, (actually ,wild educated guess), but the recoil's probably too much to handle and would make it prohibitively heavy. The steadicam relies on a counterweight to damp movements - to dampen recoil would take a huge weight. Some bright fellow'll probably come up with a system that combines...

    The future of Marine NFO's

The transitions to the JSF will not start until 2011 at the earliest (this is before the much-discussed program delays of this year) and will take a few years to complete, so there's no reason the D model Hornets will get replaced until the end of your commitment. Given that the Navy, motivated...

Boeing Flies EA-18G Wingtip and Jamming Pods for First Time

GE had a press release some time back where they were working on a new version of the F414, with 25% thrust, supposedly ready in 2-3 years (from now). Not 70k lbs, but still a nice kick in the pants.
