    New guy needs help...

Guys, he said he's joining the Marines. Different criteria. As of the Spring, the Marine Corps still looked at the ASTB pretty much as a pass/fail thing. Get over a 5/6/6, don't worry about the OAR score, and run like a gazelle. PFT and the rest of your package matter way more than just how much...

    Keeping pilots in cockpits

Hah, so helo drivers will have the last laugh. After the last fighter pilot has been replaced by a pimply faced teenager trained on hours playing Ace Combat in front of the PS2, helo drivers will still be bringing Marines into "the ****". Poetic, in a sense.

Who else is going to 2nd increment, Jul. 6th

I think he means take a breather, because once you pass the security checkpoint the Marine Corps owns you and it's a whole new world. Then again....maybe he means finding a whole new world in the bathroom. Never can tell these days.

    The dead horse

Doesn't the rumor go that a pilot got the callsign "Pump"?
  8. mmx1

    The dead horse

Nobody bugged us while we were up in the middle of the night; staff would walk in and out of their office and the Company area but not usually walk down the squadbay to inquire into our activities (as long as we were reasonably quiet and discreet, of course). Our squadbay was pitch dark, too...

    New Knife

Hah, I was working on a humorous reply but it never worked out. I don't generally carry for self-defense; it's just a useful tool to have. It does make me feel much better when running in Riverside park at night (yea, I'm a nutcase).

Own a benchmade 710; was my daily carry for most of college. Solid knives; the axis lock is pretty reliable, too.

    What time does Liberty start?

Usually by 5 or 6 in the afternoon. Duty platoon is tasked with work details around the base and barracks, so if he's on a work detail he may not be free until later in the night.

Well..... I just lost my appetite. So that's what my OSO meant when he said it was "just like college". Reminds me of the one night a year I spend in the PSU dorms....staring at the waffle ceilings.

What is a unit of AoA?

It's an angular measure, so yes, the choice of unit is arbitrary. Tough to compute fractionals on the fly, so we just pick the whole circle to equal something. We picked 360 since it has a lot of factors.

    Waiting for Aviation Package Results

What do you need BUMED for? That's probably what's holding it up. The VA doc here cleared me for Active Duty (I was on NOE after NPQ'ing out of the summer session 2005) in September of 2005, I didn't get the go-ahead from BUMED until March, just barely made the April board. If you're applying...

    OCS Liberty

While I went through under the last CO, probation could only escalate and could not be removed. However, the first level (platoon probation) is not that serious; just intended as a wake-up call. I was placed on platoon probation initially for failing the run, with no consequences on liberty...

Star, a brazilian firm, made a few full auto 1911's; there's a few underground Filipino gunsmiths that made mods too. This was in the 30's, Small Arms Review had two cool articles about a year ago.

    Lock & Load???

The M1 is loaded from above, so the bolt has to be locked to the rear, and the clip pushed into the magazine, through the chamber. The clip seating will unlock the bolt, so then you fling your thumb out before the bolt slams home or you get "Garand thumb".

Ack, I keep running into people excited over this book's rewriting of history and am skeptical of its claims of over 100 kills and kill-rates well over 50%. Did they even have a stock of 100 phoenix missiles? What do you think of the first review on amazon (by a Mr. Forzyk)...

    1st Class Swim Test

    Hammer From Above--Crisis?

Midway through the book, so I'm not sure which airframes he's referring to. War will do that - eat up equipment (and men) at prodigious rates. We've got replacements here for the light and medium helicopters - new airframes for Cobra/Hueys and a new platform to replace the 46. Everything else...

USMC Executive Flight Detachment (HMX-1 and Presidential Helo)

Fair enough. I was demurring from making a straight comparison, anyway. I'm just repeating what I've heard from defense contractors that if we were to replace the -46 with a conventional helo, it would be something like the US101, and moreover, a fair comparison of the -22's capacities would not...
  42. mmx1

USMC Executive Flight Detachment (HMX-1 and Presidential Helo)

Yes, it could. The US-101 is in approximately the size and weight class for our Medium airlift capacity and, being a modern helo, is a significant improvement over the CH-46 - makes a lot of the performance gap between the helo and the -22 go away (comparing the -22 to a 40 year old airframe...

Is white guilt making America be wimpy in war?

Edsay is spot on. To parrot my Limited Wars/Low-Intensity Conflicts final that I'm writing up tonight, WWII was rather an oddity as the Germans understood that once the Furher fell, it was time to turn over a new leaf and start afresh. The Japanese went along willingly with the peace because...

Is white guilt making America be wimpy in war?

I'm reserving my full response to the article until I have some time to digest...I feel that he's projecting his own attitudes about white guilt domestically onto the low intensity conflict in Iraq. There are many (good and bad) reasons we're in a low-intensity conflict; the attitudes and biases...
