Please take a moment and update your account profile. If you have an updated account profile with basic information on why you are on Air Warriors it will help other people respond to your posts. How do you update your profile you ask?
Yeah I picked up on that. I've never been on a military base (except a Boy Scout function at Ft. Hood many years ago) and didn't know what to expect. I'm sure that I'll be too busy trying not to drown in the ocean to worry about what I'm going to do in my free time.
Thanks for all the...
The ASTB scoring system is very complex. I would post it, but they're changing the test and I would be typing for hours only to have a new scoring system unveiled shortly.
Basically though, you can't get your adjusted scores because they are based on how you did RELATIVE TO OTHER PEOPLE...
Wow, I just read the last two days worth of posts... Suffice it to say that there is a reason they say "no politics or religion in the wardroom." That is the saying, isn't it? Anyway, I think that everyone had some valid points that they made and everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I...
World Famous Screwbirds? I checked into that (thanks to Google) - is checking out the NAS worth the trip? I'd love to go just to see the sights, but I doubt that the rest of the people going on the trip would have much interest... we'll see.
SPRING BREAK HAS ARRIVED!!!!!!!!!!
I'll be catching a plane from the great state of Texas over to sunny San Diego, California. I've never been anywhere in CA at all, and I was looking for some suggestions on cool places to eat/see/visit/whatever. I'm going with about 20 other people for...
Holy :censored_ guys - I quit watching this thread for a day or two and people start writing novels!!! Eventually I'll catch up and chime in - until then it's back to my accounting homework...
That was his point - your degree can be in anything as long as you get a degree. It doesn't matter. You could work in supply with a Biology degree if you wanted (I think).
Intro to Naval Science is definitely the easiest class I have ever taken in my college career. Granted, some of that is because of the way my instructor set up the course, but still... I ended up with something like a 102 for the class- definitely an easy "A". You'll learn some cool stuff...
Well I have no idea then. I worked my package out of NRD Houston and they accidentally had my GPA calculated a little bit wrong. I used the standard calculation that I mentioned above and they changed my GPA to what I had calculated. However, just because you have a 3.25 (for example), does...
Question - when doing situps do your arms have to stay tight against your chest? I mean can you raise your elbows out to touch your legs as long as your hands are crossed and touching your shoulders? This is the way I've done it for PRT's in the past and I was wondering whether it will be the...
I don't have it, but I'm pretty sure they take your grade points in all your college level classes (university, community college, whatever) and divide by you total attempted graded hours. It should be a standard-issue GPA calculation. Grade points are 4 for A's, 3-B's, 2-C's, 1-D's and zero...
Is the FALANT test the one where there are three lights in a vertical line and you have to tell what color light is on? If so, you might have to take a "plate test" like the link in the first post and still take the FALANT even if you ace the plate test. That's what happened to me, and even...
I've heard that Marine air is more geared towards ground support whereas Navair is more fleet defense/deep strike. I haven't even started OCS yet, so don't misinterpret my post as knowledgeable. I've still got a long road ahead, just thought this was a good question and could use a reply...
Definitely just speculation here, but I think that the 0,5,10 or whatever are percentages of loss at a specific frequency. That would mean that if you lose more than 25% of you ability to hear a tested frequency then you might be in some trouble. Like I said though, that is just my uneducated...
All you need to do is look at the practice test. The above post by jca320 is the link to get it. THE PRACTICE IS AS CLOSE TO THE REAL THING AS IT GETS.
Thisguy probably had it right. Your BDCP checks will probably be $900-1000 each, and that's every two weeks. If your BAH is 667 then I bet you clear $2000 per month easy. I get just under $2000 per month with a BAH a little lower than yours.
Nate - I was referring to the practice test. Is that what you need? Go to the "home" link at the top of the page. Under the list of forums, there is one called "Gouge." Click it. Scroll down a little bit and you'll see "ASTB Gouge.PDF" Download it. That's the practice test that will help...
If you can do all of the stuff in the practice test from this site, you should do very well on the real test. Going over the ARCO book can only help. If you feel like you're ready based on the practice and Arco, then you are definitely ready for the real ASTB.
Hard to say... you're getting into questions that probably only the actual people on the selection board can answer accurately. I think your best bet for some solid info on this one is to talk to an Officer Recruiter. I could speculate, but all it would be is a guess. The 2.1 won't look too...
Hey zuggerat - one C in one class shouldn't make too big of a difference. I think they will see that you took a hard class and give you some credit for it... who knows how it all works anyway.
You would do well to take these classes if you can make the grades. As a Finance major, I will graduate without much calculus and without physics at all. I'm pretty sure that means I can't go to test pilot school or NASA, but not everyone wants to do that anyway. Just something to think about.
^ I'm an officer candidate in the BDCP program. Technically I don't do anything for them yet, but I signed a contract committing to several years of service. Basically the Navy owns me whether I make it through OCS or not. Sorry if I gave you the impression I was an experienced Navy man.
Ben
Wow, I didn't know you could do that. I always thought that you had to either meet the standards or have already had PRK at least 6 months prior to applying. You learn something new every day.
I'm pretty sure you don't want to apply for the Marine Corps until you are 100% sure, without a doubt, that you want to be a Marine more than anything else in life. I went Navy myself, but that's the general impression I've picked up on from the Marine guys I've met before. Good luck whatever...
1. I don't recall needing my HS transcripts or SAT/ACT scores.
2. GPA, ASTB are the biggies, but they look at everything.
3. It took me about 2 months to get recommended and an additional 6 weeks or so to get the final selection letter.
4. If you are eligible now, apply NOW...
Just out of curiosity, what kind of vision did you guys who were SNA before PRK have? If you were good enough to make SNA standards, why did you get PRK? If your eyes weren't quite up to par, how did you get SNA before the surgery?
The competitive profile for pilot changes all the time. When I applied, they wanted a 6/7/6 with at least a 50 OAR. You have to remember that it's not just your ASTB scores that count. While the test is very important, the board also looks at your GPA, leadership experience, recommendations...
I went to MEPS in Houston last year. To confirm what you heard, they send me down the street to a civilian optometrist. There weren't docs on staff to do the proper tests at MEPS. However, this is just the MEPS in Houston. Others may be different.
anthros for specific airframes
I have an excel spreadsheet that explains some of the requirements for some airframes. --edit--
Here, I attached the file. This is not a height requirement issue, it instead addresses specific anthropomorphic (sp?) measurements like sitting height and...
Not exactly "the process," but it's so competitive right now that if you can't meet the fitness standards you'd pretty much be wasting your time. At least that's what I would think - your recruiter could just be a :censored_ .
I get the rainbow effect when I look at tinted windows in cars, so I know what you mean. And no, I didn't know that the shields were polarized. Do people commonly wear sunglasses under helmets or do most just rely on the shield to make seeing easier? Are the helmets in training the same as...
I definitely have no firsthand knowledge, but I would guess that the hanging would help decompress your spine. When you think about it, 1/3 of an inch really isn't all that much - so you might actually gain enough to make it. Also, if you quit doing the hang excercise you would probably...
No, I don't want a pair of aviators...
I like to buy things that will last a long time. So if I'm going to spend some money on a nice pair of sunglasses, I want them to be able to work when I get to the fleet. In general, I prefer having polarized lenses to cut glare. Will this make it...
Did you get a suppressor to go on that threaded barrel? Suppressed weapons are lots of fun :D Any other advantages to getting the tactical instead of the normal USP? I'm looking into making a purchase...
I had to fill out the EPSQ three times. It SUCKED. The processor at my recruiting station kept telling me the wrong way to save to a disk, so instead of saving the file my computer erased it. I'll be glad when they change the system so that you can update your information periodically.
Is the wait between OCS and API the same waiting period that new Ensigns get sent (probably after they requested) back home for a short duty at your hometown recruiter's office? I've heard of this several times and actually saw a Nuke at my recruiting station who had just returned from OCS...
need a little clarification
OK so to get my story straight, what happens to my guns if I check into API and have to live on base. Do I get to register and keep them at home or must they go to the armory?
Also, anyone know much about the concealed carry laws in Florida?
I didn't use the chat very frequently, but when I did use it I thought it was great. The only bad thing is when too many people are chatting at once - hard to keep up with the conversation. It's a great way to get the information you need without having to wait around. I definitely think it's...
