    new/recent topics problem

I'm having some issues with the new site. If I sit around too long while logged in and then click "new posts," sometimes the forum marks most of the topics as "read" whether I've actully read them or not. This usually happens when I take a long time posting a reply or if I walk away from my...

NROTC: TEXAS A&M OR UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS

You've got some pretty big issues to think about with this decision. Thoughts that come to mind are that a commission is a commission, no matter how you get it. You only live once. College years are supposed to be some of "the best years of your life." I think that the other posts have...

    PP License, will it help?

Having a private license will make your application look better, but I don't think it's enough to justify the costs involved. Don't get me wrong, I have my PPL and love flying as often as I can. However, I started flight training after I had almost completely finished the application process -...

    Any chance in switching communities

As the others have pointed out, there is a difference between accepting NFO and trying to redesignate versus turning down NFO and sending in another entire application. I'd look into the redesignation option - that way you don't risk losing your NFO spot if they don't take you for NA. Just my...

    Any chance in switching communities

What kind of "ammendments"? Do you think that it would be enough to make your SNA app a whole lot better? Definitely a difficult decision... I guess it comes down to whether you'd rather be a NFO or risk having a desk job. I'd stick with NFO if it were me, but you're gonna have to be the one...

I think they are both possible, but I don't have any more information than that.

    Flight School?

That's news to me - thanks for letting me know. I didn't take the ASVAB and really did think it was only used in qualifying enlisted applicants for certain jobs. Also didn't know that about the Marines - again, thanks.

    BDCP and eyesight questions

You won't get accepted into BDCP/OCS if your eyes aren't up to standards. That means that if you need PRK to make your eyes good enough, you will have to wait at least 6 months AFTER prk before you will be considered for a waiver. The other things your doctor was referring to are probably...

    knees

Definitely check on ITBS (the illitobial band syndrome that EA-6B mentioned). I haven't had it, but I read up on it when people started posting about it a while back. Do a search for ITBS and you should find some good info. There's some stretches you can do that will probably make your knees...

    Flight School?

FYI the ASVAB is for enlisted ranks, and I think all branches of the service use it. mizzoufan, what link are you referring to? Nick - you will take the ASTB. There's a practice test floating around on the site, it will help you A LOT if you can find it. I'll email it to you if you need.

    ASTB Study Guides

If you can't get them from the new site, you might see if they're still up on the old one. If not you can email me and I'll send you the practice test.
  16. ben

    Flight School?

Do you mean the ASTB? That's the test that you have to take to be able to "sign up" for OCS. There's a recent post by webmaster that should have some study gouge. Let me know if you can't find it.

    navadmin message-brown boots?

does this help? The Belleville website lists the 330 ST as "USN Flight Approved." Obviously not the navadmin message you're looking for, but it might help. Not that I actually know anything about it - I'm not even at OCS yet. http://www.lawboot.com/law_5.htm#16

    need some straight answers

In my opinion, there is no reason to have to use a recruiter from your hometown if there is a recruiting office where you go to school. I used the recruiter who is in my school's town and things have gone just fine. As far as slots being availabe, it is true that sometimes they hold off...

    Opinions on Kerry

I hate to chime in late here but I just couldn't resist. It would take way too long to try to refute each and every thing I disagree with so I'll just take the last post by akamifeldman. I'm by no means saying that I know all things. Just take a second to see the other side of your argument...

Time & Place to discuss Mishaps

I really don't understand what the big deal is. There is a LARGE difference between sharing publicly released information and sharing things you heard from people in your squadron. The house I grew up in is about 20 minutes from the reported "crash" site and our local newspaper has been on the...

    Hearing Test

My problem is that my ears ring. The ringing sound actually covers up some of the higher frequency tones that they test for, but I'm still within standards. I don't think the earplug trick would work too well for me since I hear the ringing most when all else is quiet. Thanks for the tip though.

pro rec to final selection for SNA

I have no idea how open or closed classes. You have BDCP people assigned to classes as far as 3 years in advance, and there isn't a good way for everyday people like you and me to keep up with how full each OCS class gets. Also, you have to remember that it's not just SNAs and SNFOs who have...

    Marine Flight Contracts at USNA

The 41 slots are likely for Academy people only. The number sounds WAY too low to be nation-wide.

    Hearing Test

I think you're OK. I have some hearing issues and they took me anyway. If you go below 80% then you might run into trouble, but if not then I think you're fine. Check out the NOMI site for she specifics. http://www.nomi.med.navy.mil/Nami/WaiverGuideTopics/exams.htm#sna

pro rec to final selection for SNA

Your time will vary, but I think it took a month or two before they gave me the final select. Honestly, it's been too long to remember exactly. Anyway, people say you're pretty much guaranteed a spot if you pass your medical exam, PFT, and EPSQ. However, as many people on this site will tell...

    Pullup Frustration

I'm not much of an expert, but doesn't the Armstrong program call for doing pullups EVERY day? Most fitness guru types recommend resting a particular muscle group for at least a day before you work it again. I'm sure that if the Armstrong program wasn't successful for lots of people it...

    OCS?

I don't know about OTS, but OCS and BDCP are the same thing. The only difference is that when you apply for OCS they will offer you a BDCP scholarship if you don't graduate for a while (at least 12 months?). To my knowledge everything else is the same.

    physical

There seems to be a little bit of a misconception here. I think the way it works is that you don't have to get a prostate exam for entrance into the Navy, but you DO have to get one when you get your flight physical. These are two different exams and the flight physical is much more thorough...

    Is this good or bad?

I'm not ROTC, but it sounds like it's a glorified version of "we got your stuff, now wait on us to decide something" kind of a thing.
  39. ben

    fall back?

If you want to be in the Navy bad enough, and you know you are not physically disqualified, your backup plan should be like this one - TEMPORARY.
  40. ben

    BDCP vs NROTC opinions

^I agree with rabe. If I had known that I wanted to be an officer when I was coming out of high school, I would have definitely gone NROTC. You gain more exposure different aspects of the military plus you get to go to school for free. Granted, BDCP offers a contract into a specific...

    MEPS Physical

MEPS - not fun, but required for lots of folks. To my knowledge, it's where large groups of enlistees for all branches of the military are processed at one time. Hence the name Military Entrance Processing Station. When I went, I was the only officer candidate there and had to do some extra...

    Am I too tall!?!?

See "Anthro measurements" under this same forum. I've got some info on some aircraft, but not all. Email me for specifics - posting everything would take FOREVER.
  43. ben

    fall back?

My fall back plan was to re-evaluate my chances and either reapply Navy or take a shot at the Marines. I was looking into the AF as a last resort but ended up not having to worry about it. The LAST thing I wanted to do was go get a desk job. Good luck.

    Anthro Measurements

I've got some info on the planes in the path to fighters, but that's it. It's too complicated to post all the stinkin' measurements, so if you think you're too big/small on a particular length then email me and I'll check for you (or anyone else who is curious.) From the information I have...

How to avoid boredom while running on a treadmill

Treadmills where I run are parked right in front of a bunch of TV's. Watching gets your attention focused somewhere besides running, which in turn makes running easier. At least that's how it works for me.

    What to do...

I'm not speaking from personal experience, but I wouldn't go for supply unless you know you'd be happy with it. If you go in just trying for a transfer, what happens if you don't get it? Would you be able to handle supply for 4 years? If so, then go for it. Good luck.
