You did not get misquoted. You do not in itcite discussion by asking "why are they more important than the average warfighter?" A better question would be, "what do you feel the impact on future instructors and their students if the flight hours of today's JO's is cut so far back that they...

    TOP GUN Misunderstood

Dipping sonar helos would routinely operate in pairs doing ASW. I know we fly dual-ship CSAR and SOF support, but in Vietnam, CSAR was single ship. I don't know when it changed. I've never heard of helo crews training for division lead though.

Having done a fly-in attack and a hover attack, they are not even close to being equal. Nothing is more accurate than a helo with a dipping sonar dropping from a hover.

One's a search platform to track a sub and the other is a localization platform to attack and kill it. Different missions that compliment each other when used effectively. However, you haven't lived until you can announce over ASW C&R for everyone in the Strike Group to hear, "my ball is wet...

I had one for the H-60 wired into an extension pigtail. I had an enterprising (and thirsty) AT rig it up for me. He also wired in a kill switch, so I could speak on the radio without it going out.

Another new set of Hookers inbound

Since you guys will have two Wings worth of students (4 squadrons?) does one Wing bring jets or does both Wings? Carrier deployments

The standard IDTC in the 90's through September 11th 9-11 was a 6 month deployment, followed by a surge period for 3 months, then stand down of about 6 months, Work ups would last approximately 9 months (TSTA I &II, TSTA III/C2X, Airwing Fallon, JTFEX, then deploy again for 6 months. Carrier deployments

This debate started as should helo squadrons have a Super JO in the squadron or a position on the CAG staff ( we are not getting both) The decision was that it was better to get our pilots experience on a staff learning something new vice being in a squadron again. On the flying side a CAG...

    Carrier deployments

We're presently riding all our platforms hard and putting them away wet. This will only lead to less maintenance availabilities for our ships. The 6 month deployment every 24 months worked well for 40 years, if it ain't broke, then lets try to find a stupid way to make it less effective!

Think this Sequester thing is real

The closures that towers are facing is not do to sequestration. The Navy shifted a bunch of Air Traffic Controller billets to sea duty, so each NAS got cut about 10-15% of bodies. Each NAS had to propose reductions in service and CNAP, CNAL, CNATRA, CNIC and USFFC all got to pick for a list...

    bathrooms on aircraft carriers

If you ever have a pilot take a dump in one of the gravity sonobuouy tubes (H-60F or H-3) make sure someone covers the top of the tube with something before you "launch" it. The wind can cause 'loose material' in the tubes to fly back up into the cabin/cockpit making a big old mess!

    Boston Marathon Explosion

"We" have to be right 100% of the time and "they" only have to get lucky once. To say that something like this could never happen if people were doing their jobs properly is an incredibly naive opinion considering the types of the threats we are facing.

    HMX-1 MV-22

We had an HMX-1 det to support a POTUS visit and I got a tour of the H-3 and got to talk to the Det OIC, an O-4 which is where I got my info. Additionally, it's tougher to come by H-3 parts these days. H-60 parts can be pretty much found at your local quickie-mart now....
  49. helolumpy

    HMX-1 MV-22

The H-3's remain east of the Rockies. Anything outside of that area will be H-60's. To put the H-3 in a C-17/C-5, you have to take the rotor head off and that means an FCF after you get it put back together. An H-60 can fit inside without needing an FCF on the back-end.
