    NROTC vs AFROTC

They had a great AFN commercial where you see these guys in camo and face paint with M-4's patrolling through a swamp. They start talking about the importance of weather knowledge and ask the camera "do you have what it takes to join us?' It then shows them inflating a giant international...

    Website Upgrade to Xenforo 1.2.1

The supposed NMCI rule is a printer within 50 feet. Of course, you're in the Reserves, so you don't get a printer until you turn 65 or something like that....

    Website Upgrade to Xenforo 1.2.1

Unless you have a Lexmark desk top printer which was provided by NMCI a few years back. Windows 7 doen't have the driver to support my NMCI printer, so I can't use my NMCI printer on the NMCI network anymore.... NMCI should change their logo so it says "The Fleet Serves Us"!!

Actually, I'm not paid to produce information for a FOIA request, but I still have to do it. My job assignement doesn't say anything about going through years of old records, to include the records of my predecessors to find informaion that someone asked for it. In your case, you have a...

    Just a rant

Wink stated he hated the term "boots on the ground". R1 asked him if he had a problem with the word "boots". My post was to simply suggest a reason that he may hate the term "boots" is that poem we were forced to listen to.

When I got commissioned at Mass Maritime, I was wearing USN Ensign boards vice the midshipman boards my classmates who didn't join the Navy wore. But at Kings Point, everyone gets commissioned since that's the price of a free education.

    First new Japanese CV!

So far Japan is only buying F-35A's. It would be tough to operate them from a big deck amphib so unless they change their buy, it will stay helos only.

    Breakdown of "The Drama"

Some advice I learned early (and practice to this day), when you stick your head above the grass and take fire, sometimes it's best to just duck and cover. Someone else will stick their head up soon and they'll start drawing fire. Heat on them is heat off you. I learned that was the first...

    Favorite Golf Courses

Sawgrass Country Club (not TPC but probably nicer but without the island hole) has offered free tee times to military folks on Labor day. I'm teeing off at 1330! Played TPC Sawgrass and must say that was the nicest track I've ever played. TPC Virginia Beach used to have internet only...

Who pins the wings at winging Ceremony? Wife or Dad?

At least in the Navy, most promotions are usually just the wife and maybe kids. (Unlike some Air Force promotions, where it seems they flew in their entire families; it was like a retirement ceremony with all the family involved) Since the wife is usually the one pinning on the new rank...

Being deployed to the other side of the world when your daughter is born has got to be on the list somewhere. PCS'ing every couple of years gets difficult as your kids start making friends. Staff work. That being said, I have no regrets!

    The Officer Recruiter is in...

My info is dated, but you used to be able to defer student loan payments for your first two years in the Navy. So, you'll be picking up JG (with that raise) about the same time you have to repaying student loans. IIRC, it wasn't a Navy program per se, it was a program within the Student Loan...

    Strategic sealift officer

I still will occasionally wear the old pin because I don't wear it enough to bother: 1. doing the work to get the Strategic Sealift designation 2. Spend the money to buy a new pin that I might wear once or twice a year .

    Strategic sealift officer

You don't just have to ship out, you need to keep your license active and be involved in a industry related to you license. And you don't have to wear the enormous pin that I may occasionally wear because no one knows exactly what it is.

    WHICH Brown Shoe?

Dude, for $600 you can get a pair of Bates brown shoes, a new pair of Dryjoys golf shoes and a brand new driver. I'm not sure where your priorities lie, but $600 for a pair of shoes is waaaay too much on an Ensign's salary!

On and Off Base Housing at NAS Jax

The problem with 295 to NAS (over the Buckman Bridge) is when there is a fender bender on Rt 17 heading into the base. Traffic will back up over the hump of the bridge in a heart beat. If you're in Mandarin, you're committed to the Buckman.

Long Beach, CA mayoral candidate upset over Hornets

For the record, I'd love to attach that picture to all the noise complaint email responses I have to send. The moments of happy satisfaction would soon be outweighed by the ass-pain when the sent my response to the city, the paper, the Region, etc.

    WHICH Brown Shoe?

I like the neutral polish, the brown was darker than the dye in the leather and it would leave an uneven coloring when I was done if I didn't get the wax layer equal.
