    F/A-18 aileron explanation

The computer in the F/A-18 drops the ailerons to match the flaps when the flaps are lowered. Remember, in the Hornet, the pilot makes suggestions to the computer and the computer flies the airplane.:D

How many people per class fail to graduate OCS?

Ah, the new kinder and gentler OCS.:icon_rage My AOCS class started with 32, graduated 20. 2 rolled in, 2 rolled out to a later class. Of the 12 that left, 10 DOR'ed in the first week before we even met our DI and the other 2 within two weeks. Anyway, if you want it bad enough, you will...

    Deployment of F/A-18F

Now, I heard the other day that if two or more Strike Groups are combined (be they CSG, ESG or SSG) then the resultant will be called a.... . . . . . . . . BATTLE GROUP. Need something for all those admirals to do.

    Marine aviators on boats?

This is called Navy and Marine Corp TACAIR Integration. Basically, every airwing will have one USMC F/A-18C squadron. Oh, and Steve, the boat is that thingie in my avatar. Silly shoes.;)

    Deployment of F/A-18F

From Naval Aviation Vision 2020: The notional CVW of the future is as follows: - 44 Strike Fighter (F/A-18, JSF) aircraft - 4 - 12 Joint-Unmanned Combat Air System (J-UCAS) aircraft - 5 EA-18G Airborne Electronic Attack (AEA) aircraft - 5 E-2D Advanced Hawkeye Aircraft - 20 MH-60R/S...

    OCS Changes

Hey Doc, Remember it is not AOCS anymore and has not been for a number of years. It is now just OCS when the Navy combined the Newport OCS with the Pensacola AOCS. AOCS was tough, OCS was not. And I guess, still is not.:(

    F-14 Shoestring??

Used to love to watch T-45 HUD cripples come to the Prowler RAG. "500, Prowler ball, no HUD" is always good for a laugh when the Hornets start wanking around the boat.

    E-1b?

Grumman E-1b Tracer aka "Willie Fudd" or "Stoof with a Roof" Predecessor of the E-2 Hawkeye, same mission. E-1B: S-2A Tracker (predecessor of S-3 Viking): S-2A was also the basis for the C-1A Trader, the first COD (Carrier Onboard Delivery) which was the predecessor of the current...

    How did you get commissioned?

Yeah, a bunch of them invaded the O'club last Friday. I heard that it was there first time allowed liberty. Mostly JG's and LT's with a smattering of ENS's. Few prior enlisted. Lots of medical and JAG insignia. It was a veritable sea of black shoes and black jackets. I think some of them were...

    Pilot Callsigns

All the following were in my A-6 squadron: "Big" Johnson (he was 6'4" and 230) "Stiffy" "Lick" Mawhinney "Boner" "Stroke" and of course, "Meat". "Lick" and "Big" were both pilots I flew with a lot. Imagine the briefing board: Lizard 500 - Big/Meat (or) Lick/Meat What were they...

    How did you get commissioned?

An experience to say the least or the least of experiences.:icon_wink And as for the OT: Aviation Officer Candidate School Class One Eight Niner Zero, Drill Instructor Gunnery Sergeant Woodring, United States Marine Corp, Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of Battalion Two.

Oh and Brett, the use of words like pejorative means you are ready for hinge status and your lobotomy. Welcome to the Dark Side my friend.:D

    Navy Attack Helos?

One word why it is a "hill of beans" - MAINTENANCE 2 SH-60's on a DDG means that you will have one available while the other is in scheduled maintenance (7/14/28/56/224 day inspections, etc). Also, only need one set of replacement parts, etc. You get the idea.

Air traffic as seen by the FAA

At IGS at Whidbey, they love to show a snapshot of all the 1200 squawkers in one day in the Seattle region. Lot of guys going "see and avoid" right where we do our low levels.

    Ribbon Bothering Me

Actually, it is the National Defense Service Medal. He is just wearing the ribbon that represents the medal.:D It was authorized for a while after Desert Storm and then reauthorized after 9/11. Basically, the ability to fog a mirror while in the miltary during a certain time period.

    Blood Chits

    Chinese Master Inflight Refueling

Pretty harsh Brett.;) Anyway, I can think of several other countries that have IFR capability (and have used it). India - Has 6 IL-78 tankers. Just did a joint exercise with the French where their Su-30's tanked from both Indian and French tankers. Iran - Has two or three 707 style...

A Day in the Life of a SWO on an Aircraft Carrier

A here is a good look of the life a JO strike fighter pilot at sea. http://www.airwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12671 A little tongue in cheek but all good humor has a basis in reality.

    Marine Squadrons on Carriers

Well Flash, I think we now have more admirals than ships. I remember the old days when an airwing was almost 90 aircraft. 14 plane Intruder squadrons, 14 plane Tomcat squadrons and 5 plane Prowler squadrons. Now we are lucky to have 70 airframes on a flight deck.:(

    Nuclear carrier in Japan

    OCS Changes

AOCS Class 18-90, Gunnery Sergeant Woodring, United States Marine Corp, Non-commissioned Officer in Charge of Battalion II. And for you new guys, in the old days, AOCS in Pensacola was strictly for aviators and we had no Chiefs only DI's. Everyone else (shoes and other lower forms of life...

    OCS Changes

Obviously, somebody's sarcasm detector was broken when they read my post. OCS can be changed for the better. I don't think feedback from newly commissioned candidates is probably the best source however. However, some of the more rigorous portions of training installed a certain...

    leave charged over holidays?

Just wait to you have been in the fleet a while and they start taking away your extra days. You can only have a max of 60 days on the book at the end of the fiscal year (sometimes more if deployed, combat, etc). If you have more than 60 on 30 September, you have 60 on 01 Oct. Gone, bye bye...

    HH-60 Smoke in cockpit?

In the Prowler, the cooled bleed air is at 32 degrees. In humid conditions at high power settings (i.e. on the cat), you can get it to snow in the cockpit if you have the ECS in full cold.

The Good, The Bad and The Stupid...

As an NFO who has in a mid-air collision caused by a pilot doing an unauthorized manuever (which he had done before and been counselled not to repeat), I am saying that the punshment fit the crime. 15 hours, 500+ knots, <100 feet, populated area. What would have happened if he had hit some...

    Holiday Leave

Maybe not in the "expeditionary" fleet. Were you guys on AF rules for leave and crew rest??;) Honestly, it usually depends on the CO's policy. He can say 350 miles requires a leave chit or he can use the reasonable man theory. Usually depends on how many times he has been burned by people...

    Naval Officer College Loan Cancellation

Last time I checked you could take up to 3 years deferment of student loans for being active duty military. I did it for two then started paying. Paid them off 3 years ago. BTW: I have never heard of loan cancellations for enlisted either. There are programs for both officers and enlisted to...

    FrankenProwler????

Brett, I was at a meeting with "Kilo" Parks (in his new contractor role) and he told me that the ICAP III is one bad-a$$ mofo in terms of capability. Any truth to that?

WATCHES: Question for all you Aviators

Oh yeah, and lets remind all the newbies that de-gloving doesn't mean losing your glove. This ECMO lost all his fingers and part of his hand. The metal band of his watch caught on the canopy bow and that was it.

    No more rifle drill?

Ah, the kinder and gentler OCS. Back in the day (all the best stories start "Back in the day"), we had: O-Course C-Course Rifle Drill Rifle Run Rose Garden Grenade Pit Are the DI's still allowed to yell or so the have to say "Please"? Sad to see how the program has been...

WATCHES: Question for all you Aviators

Good watch for dressup. POS for normal day to day. You will kill yourself if you scratch that Rolex or Brietling getting into the jet. My Ironman died at 60' while diving so now I have a POS from the K-Mart in Guam. Still works after two years.

    F-18 Marines or Navy?

Ah, the wisdom of a Prolwer stud. Prowler NATOPS is actually 6.5 pos to 2.4 neg. (Lower under assymetric G-loads and at great speeds). Yes, administratively limited to 4G's but that is because of FLE (fatigue life expenditure) and the need to make the jets last till 2010+. Being a HDLD...

Marine Air vs Air Force or Navy

It's not the platform, it's the culture that makes a big difference. I can't speak to our brothers in green (though I have deployed with some great ones), but as for AF vs. Navy, Bob Norris said it best: The Cliff Note's version is simply, "Flare to land, squat to pee." :D But if you...

    NFO's in the EA-18 G ???

Since it is an EA-18G not an EF/A-18G, I would put my money on VAQ not VFAQ.
  44. SteveG75

    NFO's in the EA-18 G ???

Like Brett said, priorities will dictate loadouts. A pod is much more useful than a HARM. You will be introduced to all this during the Tactics phase at the RAG. And don't forget, even though the E/F guys will be the HARM truck, you will get to do all there planning and shot cards. Also, those...
  45. SteveG75

    NFO's in the EA-18 G ???

OK, I could be wrong on the numbr of degrees. But look at an E/F from below. The pylons toe out to ensure weapons separation. The G will have the same issue since re-engineering the wing is out of the question.
  46. SteveG75

    NFO's in the EA-18 G ???

Yeah Brett, I agree. I spoke to some Pax River guys who did the F1 pod tests a while ago and they said it does fly like the family truckster with all that drag. Also, don't forget those big slab sided pods are canted out 7 degrees on the wing stations. I highly doubt you will see the 2 drop -...
  47. SteveG75

    NFO's in the EA-18 G ???

Remember, that JSOW part is not funded yet. And bigger engines burn more gas so you need more drops which cause more drag which burns more gas............
  48. SteveG75

    NFO's in the EA-18 G ???

Ok, here is some gouge on EA-18G stores loading. Below are photos from a little booklet I got at a meeting I went to at Boeing. These are "Approved for Public Release SPR-109.03". Basically, all EA-18G will have ALQ-218 wingtip pods. Block 1 will be able carry ALQ-99 pods, HARM, AIM-120C...
