    Nomex Jackets

Nomex jacket is considered organizational clothing. Technically, you cannot wear it off base and can only wear it with working uniforms (i.e. flight suits or wash khakis on the ship). The leather jacket is a uniform item and can be worn with multiple uniforms and out in town. You are only...

    Best and Worst 'Propstops' Worldwide

We did a CVW-9 det to Masirah in 1995 and being hosted by the Hawk squadron, the only place we ate was the O'Club. Pretty good as I remember it (steak every night). All our meals were paid for by the embassy, our only expense was the nightly beer. It was kinda fun to be getting a better per-diem...

    The Role of the NFO

Little NFO story for you all: Westerman / Westin saga One afternoon CDR Ron Hays, CO VA-85, and myself In Buckeye 1, and Lt. Bill Westerman and Ltjg Brian Westlin in Buckeye 2 were scheduled for road recce in Route Package 2 in North Vietnam, armed with MK-82s. Just prior to manning...

    Best and Worst 'Propstops' Worldwide

Here is some old school TACAIR gouge On Base: - Tinker burger - SAC box lunch at Offutt (much bigger than those small ones they give the fighter boys) - Anything the chief's mess is grilling outside the hangar on det (Fallon, Key West, El Centro come to mind). Nothing like a greasy...

    Summary of NFO flight school

Former Prowler RAG instructor here. RP's (replacement pilots) fly their first six flights with IP's (instructor pilots) and then do the rest of the syllabus with NFO instructors. They bounce and CQ with the same NFO instructor. NFO instructors not only fly with the pilots, we also did front...

    Uniforms

Everything you wanted to know: Navy Uniform Regulations. Chapter 3 has the actual uniforms. These are all legal but obviously some are not used (tropical khaki comes to mind) https://buperscd.technology.navy.mil/bup_updt/508/unireg/uregMenu.html

F-14A Catastrophic Engine Failure at Mach 1

I didn't make the Stennis cruise. I got to do the 8 month Westpac float-ex while everyone else went to war. Oh well.

F-14A Catastrophic Engine Failure at Mach 1

Waylon got command of VFA-147 , CVW-9, USS Carl Vinson. I was in the same air wing last cruise while he was the skipper. I was also in CVW-11 (VA-95) when this incident happened. Waylon had burn on the back of his neck and the RIO had burns around both arms (he had his gloves on but his...

    Let's talk about reputation points

I personally would like to see who is giving me comments. The one I got was "dont be a hater" about a thread I made on F/A-18 guys. My comment was said in jest and I have done 4 cruises with my pointy nose brethern and have the greatest respect for them. As it currently stands, the rep...

    Websites

Sailrbob is good. Pretty accurate reflection of SWO life. Heck, I work with a couple and they are actually great guys. Here are a couple of good SWO quotes from SB: 1) SWO fire solution: STAB, STAB, LOOK, STAB, STAB. 2) How do you know when SWO's are confused? They are stabbing each...

Pilots and NFO on Recruiting Duty?

Usually not a flying billet unless there is a T-34 available. I remember that NRD Albany used to have a T-34B. Shore duty (unless a RAG or VT instructor) is usually DIFDEN (Duty in flight status not involving flying, still get flight pay and counter clicks) vice DIFOPS (duty in flight status...

    Attrition rate for boat qualifications?

Those are numbers from the EA-6B RAG. Our jet is a lot harder to qualify in and we also qualify our pilots at night (they don't do night traps in the training command). Also, due to timing, we sometimes have to send the students to the boat with the minimum of hours (50 hours in type). Like I...

    Attrition rate for boat qualifications?

I have seen boats where 100% of the pilots qualify and ones where only 60-70% qualify. There are just too many variables. Heck, we had boat dets at the Prowler RAG where only 50% qualified. Those who disqual the first time usually make it on the second attempt.

    why are you an SNA?

Beats working for a living. :icon_smil Actually worked as an engineer in school and decided that I would rather be challenged and be excited. Get to part of an tradition that reaches back to Midway and prior (met some WWII vets at Tailhook). Work with people like "Bug" Roach...

    Ea-6b?

What Flash said. Also, COMVAQWINGPAC (Prowler Wing) is committed to keeping the EA-18G at Whidbey. Personally, I say that basing at Lemoore makes sense from a range and maintenace support standpoint. Land based technically deploy 3 months and then home for 6 months. CV squadrons deploy 6...

    Last F-14A's Are Gone

Got this book at Hook 04. Here is a link: http://www.ospreypublishing.com/title_detail.php/title=S7875~per=36 Pretty well researched and basically the Iranian F-14's scored 130-150 kills during the Iran-Iraq war (1981-88) with approximately 40-50 being Phoenix kills. Don't forget, most...

    Marine F/A-18D WSO/NFO

In the fleet, the MC is the senior man in the crew. Can be the pilot or ECMO. I was the third most senior (lineal) guy in my squadron so I was usually the MC unless flying with the CO or XO. We had JO MC's and sent out a couple of cross countries that way. Front seat (ECMO1) time however was...

    Marine F/A-18D WSO/NFO

WSO actually has a lot of stuff available to him to do. He can run the radar (if the pilot lets him), handle comms (if the pilot lets him), find/designate targets with the FLIR (if the pilot lets him). It is very easy to be overtasked in a high-stress environment and good crew coordination can...

    F/A-18D question

I heard that VFA-115 flew about 40% 2Q6 (tanker) hops on their last deployments. That is about what we did in A-6's so I have little sympathy for the FAG's (Fighter Attack Guys :icon_magi ).
  23. SteveG75

    Marine F/A-18D WSO/NFO

No. The WSO can find targets but the only pickle to drop/fire ordance is in the front. No. The Marines send all Hornet pilots throught the same RAG and they are all "single-seat" mentality. There is really no crew-coordination training since the Corp may take a C pilot and stick him in a...

    reasons for rejection

There is a maximum age at commisioning based on designator. NFO is higher than pilot. The age is waiverable for prior ENLISTED service based on the designator. I looked at this for one of my enlisted who wanted to go to OCS. Couple of things no one every mentions about NFO-pilot transitions...

    F/A-18D question

D's don't go to the boat. Based on the max trap weight of the F/A-18 C/D, a D empty weight precludes it from having enough gas to trap. Basically, a D would be so low on gas that that every pass would have to be hawked by a tanker and if they boltered, they would have to get gas from the tanker...

    'angels'

Angels = thousands Cherubs = hundreds i.e. Helo at "Cherubs five" is at 500 feet. Jets use angels so 11,500 is angels 11.5 .

    Prowlers

Flash, Ground refueling panel for the A-6E was on the monitored bus which required both generators on line, hence, both motors running. Never changed till the aircraft went away. So, how is D.C.? Ever get that Level III MC sign-off. "Meat" Forget who posted maintenance hours vs...
