    Holster Styles for the Sandbox

Just another thought. You may be having to wear body armor when outside. That means with a shoulder holster, you have to take it off every time you put on/remove the body armor when going in/out of buildings. Also, if you can get a set or 2 of DCU's, then hang the pistol on your belt. My...

    F-4Us in Vietnam?

Marines never flew the A-7 Corsair II. A-4's and F-4's. Now, the French did fly F4U-7 Corsairs and F8F Bearcats in Indochina but that might before the time period you are thinking of.

Tax question re: ship mess bills

Actually, it depends. I have claimed them before. If you are maintaining a residence for your wife, then they can be claimed as a non-reimbursed business expense. Two ways to do this: 1) Claim the actual value of your mess bill reciepts. 2) Claim the standard IRS deduction of approx $30 a...

    Prowler FO Question

You did see this part, right? Other than the fact that I need to hang here 4.5 more years to get to 20, sounds like a great job for a FOS'd O-4.:D 1500+ hours means probably means DH with today's flight time averages. (I got right at 1200+ with a fleet, RAG and DH tour in the Prowler (6 years)).

    VFA-201 to be decommissioned?

OK, OK, I give. And, I did do a "Lobo" Flag back in 1994 with the reserves out of Mugu. My point should have been that with the decrease in OPTAR and the declining need for a reserve airwing to go to war and the new USN-USMC Tacair integration plan where we get a Marine squadron in every...

    VFA-201 to be decommissioned?

I will pour a little bit of cold water on the old guys here with a question. When was the last time a reserve fighter or attack squadron deployed?? IMHO, the idea of CVWR-20 marrying up with a reserve carrier (JFK?) and heading out to do battle is over. I have not seen VF/VA/VFA reserve...

    Fun Meter no longer pegged

:icon_hamm Nail, meet hammer. Lots of guys (Navy and Marine) are being sent IA from my command (NWDC, Navy Warfare Development Command). I actually see it as a way of breaking up the pain of shore duty (this one is painful) and gaining some points with the detailers for follow-on orders. We...

    Vertrep

Actually, the MSC ships do have room for a -46. I had a DH who was -46 to Intruder to Prowler transition guy who did a tour flying out of Guam flying off MSC ships. He said they had great food and staterooms. As for the Puma's a little Google search revealed...

    Sea King retirement

Whidbey SAR might have an issue with that statement. They basically do all the overland mountain SAR in northern WA. The AF out of McChord covers the south and the CG Dolphins do the water. They did 16 rescues in 2005 including 6 medevacs. Whidbey may be the only NAS with its own SAR left...

    Kneeboards For New PCL's

PCL in my navbag outside pocket. Checklists under my kneeboard (between thigh and board) when not in use. When using my PCL (i.e. emergency), it goes in the same place as the checklist. Worked for 2000+ tacair hours.

Search continues for missing Navy aircraft, 4 aviators

NO speculating boys, let's not let this thread get out of hand. That said, article does mention that it was T-39 from VT-86, presumably overland. One of my old CO's is now a contractor pilot flying those. Hope his OK.

    Indian Country?

Small world indeed. Of course, when you short a division of Hornets 200 lbs each , you end up with 800 lbs to go rage. LOL. Not that I would ever do that. So, from your location, I presume you are doing the reserve Hornet gig out of Fort Worth. Nice to see more fleet bubbas on the board.
  18. SteveG75

    Indian Country?

Hey, which squadron in CAG-11 were you in? I did the 1993 and 1995 cruises on the "Babe-raham" in VA-95. I remember the Hornets trying to jump us in Indian Country and then they trying to beg some opportunity gas if we had a buddy store. Those guys had no shame. Still, good times and Perth...

    REQUEST: Good aviation/military books

In A-4's style, but I used Barnes and Noble since they have all these books: The Blond Knight of Germany by Raymond F. Toliver, Trevor J. Constable. Erich Hartman went into comabt with the Luftwaffe in 1942, he was twenty years old. By 1945, he had 352 kills. After spending 10 years in a...

    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

Correct, working blues = quick stops, winter blues = liberty uniform. The difference is the tie. They are considered a different uniform. From Chapter One of the regs:
  21. SteveG75

    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

Oh, they are not wearing "working blues", they are wearing "winter blues". Working blues don't have a tie and as a working uniform are not authorized outside work space (i.e. off base). They fall into the same category as coveralls. Winter blues are considered a service uniform and are in...

    OCS Changes

Actually, OCS has only had Marine DI's for a few years. The old OCS was based in Newport, RI and had 100% Chiefs with no Marines. During the mid-90's, the Navy consolidated OCS with AOCS (Aviation Officer Candidate School) in Pensacola. AOCS always had Marine DI's. My stepfather was AOCS...

    F-22

The E/F is not in the same category as a JSF. The E/F is the Tomcat replacement (and arguably the Intruder replacement that the C/D never was) while the JSF is the replacement for the C/D. Totally different beasts.

    I Need Help!

    Landing Question Regarding Accident

Read the above post. 1. Pilots go to full military power when they trap NOT afterburner. You don''t need afterburner and it will use gas that you WILL need if you bolter. 2. Any pilot that pulls the throttles back before being given the signal by the guys on deck is asking for a FNAEB and...

Total Ejections a Pilot can make?

Well, I was 6'2" before I ejected and 6'2" after I ejected. Also, Brett is right, it is a lot more than 12G's. The spine can take about 12G's sustained in the vertical axis but can take a lot more for short (milliseconds) periods of time.
  29. SteveG75

Total Ejections a Pilot can make?

Well, after three ejections, I wouldn't want to fly anyway. I know quite a few people who have survived an ejection or other class 'A' mishap ('A' is loss of aircraft, $1mil damage or death). I am one of the few people I know with two 'A's on their record. #1 was an A-6E midair that...

BAH while at OCS for the wife

    Air Medal Display Question

    Civvy Cobras?

Speaking of fire bombers, how about the Martin Mars? A photo of the Martin-Mars water dropper from Canada. 7,400 gallons of water with each drop, if foam is added then it can cover 4 acres of ground with 4 inches of foam in one drop. Good pic to illustrate the size of the Mars. Notice...

737 runs off runway at Midway Chicago

    F/A-18 for crowd control?

My first cruise, we got diverted to Somalia after the Task Force Ranger battle. Micheal Durant mentions hearing jet flyby's in his book. The first flight was two F-14A's at 500' over Mogadishu in full blower. We then did several days of flight ops within sight of the beach.

TWO ITEMS .... MMA in Mugu and carrier in Hawaii ???

Highly doubt we will see a carrier in Hawaii. GW is going to Yoko in 2008 to replace the Kitty. JFK is going away. Navy is going from 12 CV hulls to 11. East Coast (Norfolk/Mayport) are sweating who gets the JFK's replacement. Article here...

    Landing in 0 visibility

ACLS (Automatic Carrier Landing System) is the SPN-42 or SPN-46. It is basically a data link system that allows the carrier to track the aircraft and give it steering commands. These steering commands are relayed to the pilot via a needles display that shows glideslope and lineup deviations...
