    Winged FO's Start Talking! (please)

Fly what you want. If you are good enough, the Navy will find a place for you. I chose Intruders out of flight school and never regretted that decision even though I only flew them for just over 3 years.

    Global Hawk out...BAMS-D in

Global Hawk (any block) =/= BAMS-D (which is basically a Block 10) =/= MQ-4C (BAMS) Don't expect to see the AF flying BAMS anytime soon.

F-35C Unable to Get Aboard Ship, really?

Just FYI, F-105 Thunderchief was equipped with both types of air-air refueling. Note the door for AF style boom just in front of the Navy style probe.

F-35C Unable to Get Aboard Ship, really?

Heck, half the A-6E's that the Navy bought were rebuilt A-6A's. Still waiting for the first F/A-18E that is a rebuilt F/A-18A. Calling the new airplane a Hornet was pure politics.

F-35C Unable to Get Aboard Ship, really?

And a bitching patch (got one in my collection at home). LOL But seriously, the A-6F was killed to build the A-12. Then the A-12 got killed so the Navy went to the Hornet E/F. Would have loved to fly the A-6F though. More F info with pics...

    Bombing Hitler's Dams

1955 movie based on Paul Brickhill's book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dam_Busters_(film) Video of the 65th anniversary flypast at the Derwent Dam (used by 617 Squadron to practice). Pretty low even for day VFR. Must have been fun at night. Another good view of the flyby:

Blue Angels - Victims of Budget Cuts?

Two words........Smart Perdiem. I am sure that the travel budget is a big part of the Blue's budget. They could go for government messing and probably save at least $50 per a person per a day while on the road. It all adds up.

funny things you've heard on the radio

Two more classics (even if not true): A Pan Am 727 flight, waiting for start clearance in Munich , overheard the following: Lufthansa (in German): " Ground, what is our start clearance time?" Ground (in English): "If you want an answer you must speak in English." Lufthansa (in English): "I am...

funny things you've heard on the radio

Another SR-71 story: SR-71 Blackbird pilot Brian Shul reported one exchange. His SR-71 was screaming across Southern California, 13 miles high and its crew were monitoring cockpit chatter as they entered Los Angeles airspace. Though they didn't really control the SR-71, LA monitored its...

funny things you've heard on the radio

Old Intruder story: - There we were...another tanker hop. A squeaky voiced fighter guy with a south-Texas accent jumps on the air with “Say Texacoooo”. I just can’t resist, so I reply with “Texacoooo”. His voice lowers an octave as he says “Say tanker posit”. I’m on a roll so I give him “Tanker...

    Marine F-22s

Yeah, I bought a '77 308 GTB back in January. Actually, not a bad car to maintain.

    Marine F-22s

Yeah, got to love the 308GTS in Vacation. But don't forget Christy coming back in the Mondial convertible in Vegas Vacation with the baby in the back seat. BTW, is that Family Truckster the STOVL variant? I seem to remember Clark getting it airborne off a ramp.

    Marine F-22s

Brett, these were just newspaper editorials. Of course, the budget crisis is much greater over there than here so everybody is looking to shave a penny (or a pound) as appropriate.
  17. SteveG75

    Marine F-22s

Well, the Brits have already dropped the F-35B. Current plans is that the first Queen Elizabeth class carrier will be built and then immediately mothballed. Cheaper to do that than cancel the contract. The second ship will be built with cats, arresting gear and an angled deck. Currently the...

    Classics & Antiques

A major service (belts, valve lash, etc) goes for about $4500 at a mechanic every 30k miles. If you can work on cars yourself, you can do it for probably $1500 in parts. 308/328 series is really the last Ferrari that you can work on at home. I have a friend who puts $200 to $300 every month into...

Proceedings Takes a Look at the Culture of Naval Aviation

Actually, the VA-155 mishap was on the VR-1351 hitting the Columbia River near Rock Island. The crop duster mishap was VA-95 on the VR-1354. Crew was Dan Dugan and XO Jacobs. XO went to mast for falsifying his up chits. I joined VA-95 two months later and flew quite a bit with Dugie. BTW, the...

    REQUEST: Good aviation/military books

Just finished a "A Dawn Like Thunder" about VT-8. Everyones knows about the guys off the Hornet but this book also covers the VT-8 Avengers that flew off Midway as well as what happened after the Battle of Midway. Hint: Cactus Air Force. Definitely a good read.

Intruder & Prowler - Mishaps [History]

I knew the pilot, Mark "Willie" Nelson, in the Q-1 mishap. We were instructors together back at VAQ-129. About 8 months before this mishap, "Willie" almost had to the use the yellow and black handle on a another hop. He was flying a DEFTAC hop during a RAG det down in El Centro. While doing a...

    limited edition C* model

Handle aft, pilot or RIO can initiate. Handle forward, pilot only initiates. Generally, handle would be aft with NATOPS qualified aircrew in the back seat. When flying students or guests, handle is forward so a panicky backseater does not eject a functioning pilot. If the pilot pulls, everyone...

What is it like to be an NFO?

NFO's can do anything they want in retirement. I know a lot (including myself) that are test engineers at Pax. That means there is a possibility of flying. I know one who is hired on to be a civilian flight test NFO. Honestly, I miss flying but did not fly for my last 6 years in the Navy. There...

    osprey escort

Getting the OV-10 on and off the big deck amphibs may be a bit of an issue. IMHO, an Osprey escort needs to deploy with the Osprey which means LHA/LHD compatibility at a minimum. OV-10's have flown off LHD's in the past but the payload is limited due to the flight deck length. Landing back...

F/A-18E vs F... benefits of one over the other?

So, a 1,000 lbs more give, correct? Making sure that mission critical go/no-go asset gets all the fuel it needs... Some more of that fine single seat tanker tradition (no NFO needed to run a buddy store).

MEDALS?? We don't NEED no STEEEENKIN' badges !!! *split thread*

Staff pukes, got to hate them. The Navy guys in Baghdad during my IA were giving themselves BSM's and then fought me over an NCM with 'V' for one of my Battalion EWO's. PO2 going outside the wire almost daily with EOD. Installing systems on buildings in Ramadi while under sniper fire. Their...

    IA/GSA Billets Stateside

Well, that info changes things. No where did you say that you had already been to Iraq. IA/GSA or some other billet? Your profile really has no info and no wings with your name. I made an assumption based on lack of facts. You really need to provide more info if you want good responses.

Tampastan IA's are few and far between. Just suck it up and go to Iraq like the rest of the men. I will say that my year of working Counter-IED in Iraq was the most rewarding of my career. Not the most fun or best flying or time with family. But I know that the equipment I was tasked with...

Wow! An Air Force BGEN unloads in his going away speech!!!!

I don't know. I think the Aussies might take the cake. F-111 flyby at the 2008 Indycar races including a nice little "bump and burn". Also heard about this one from some of the F-111 guys that came to Whidbey circa 1996. Army vs. AF at the AF Academy in Colorado Springs. F-111's are the...

    too little to fly?

When I was an instructor at 129, there was a female student that we had to anthro out of Prowlers. Too short/light for the ejection seat. Would have broken her back (less weight = more G's). She ended up in VQ-1 and got the all expenses paid trip to Hainan.

Nope. Basically those two are held up by other members. Even if they pass that hurdle, Webb's blanket hold-up will prevent them from moving forward. Webb's actual quote:

What do you Aviators and Flight Officers take in the cockpit with you?

For flying around or packed in your survival vest? Flying around was a water bottle, candybars, Rice Krispie treats. Nothing too gut wrenching since I have had 8+ hour sorties strapped to an ejection seat. (Most sorties on OSW were double/triple cycle so about a 4.5). Survival vest...
