A day in the life of a j/o carrier pilot

This is the transcipt of a focsle follies skit from my last cruise. I apologize in advance for the all caps, that is how it was sent to me. Enjoy! THE PIECE IS ENTITLED 'DIARY OF A DAY ON THE ILLUSTRIOUS CHUCKY V' BY LIEUTENANT WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (STRIKE FIGHTER PILOT). THE NARRATIVE TAKES...

18-90, Gunnery Sergeant Woodring, United States Marine Corp, Non-Commisioned Office in Charge of Battalion II. There was no abbreviations in our class. I can still remember the first words he ever said to me......."Get over in the grass and mountain climb till your heart bursts." My...

    Fleetweek San Fran 2010

Somehow I just got reminded of my buddy's story of visiting Provincetown, MA. For those who don't know, Provincetown is out on Cape Cod and straights are actually in the monority there. So, anyway, my buddy was on the Academy sailing team and they pulled into Provincetown. Why, who knows...

Just HOW difficult is the A&M Corps of Cadets? (I'm needing some advice)

My last squadron was the active duty partner for the NROTC unit at Boulder. One of my last cross countries was to Buckley to support a dog and pony for them. I went off and spent the weekend with family. The three JO's went raging in downtown Boulder in bags and drank the mids under the table...

    Pax River Geo-Bach

As a Va Beach guy who just retired and is hoping to get picked up for a job at Pax, I can tell you that the drive is right about 4 hours. 198 miles from my house (by Wesleyan) to Pax. As for the geo-bach, there a plenty of small apartments around Pax. A couple of non-traditional solutions...

    Driving Records!

Well, the yellow is the original color and I agree that very few cars look good in yellow. Corvette, Viper, Lambo. That is probably about it. Only body mod is an 80-82 rear bumper.

    Gloves

I feel that the photos of guys manning up without gloves are inconclusive. I never worn mine for pre-flight or man-up to avoid getting grease or hydraulic fluid on them. I always put them on at engine start. All it takes is being in one aircraft fire (reference my earlier post) and you will...

    Gloves

I had a buddy who was badly burned when his Intruder caught fire while hot refueling on deck. The worst areas where were his gloves had the fingers cut off. I had my gloves on when this jet caught on fire and I always wore them since.

    Driving Records!

Agreed. But, I have to agree that a Scion tC is not an exciting vehicle. Personally, I am not a big fan of "Fast and Furious" type cars. I'll stick with American V-8's. Here is a pic of my toy. Never pulled over even with the sidepipes (which can be quite loud). I was going to do a 427 small...

I would question why you did not learn your lesson at 19 with the first arrest. You stated the second was just last year (at age 26) so that means you just kept on doing stupid stuff. That will show a continued lack of maturity. Also, the second arrest is cannot be considered a traffic offense...

    Service Swap?

It is not all flying in the Navy either. After you get your wings and get through the FRS, you do your first sea (flying) tour. After that is a shore tour which may or may not include flying (i.e. staff, ROTC, instructor, weapons school). Then there is usually a dis-associated sea tour which...

    NAVADMIN 196/10 Personal Firearms

Another problem is that base armories are going away. Little Creek got rid of their base one and each unit had to make arrangements to store its own weapons. I was at TACRON while we were working out all the solutions. Ended up getting our own armory but had to beg for space from RIVGRU for a while.

Special Mission DH Selects making O-5?

TACRON is also a SM DH slot now. So, you get sea pay, no flying, and work consists of standing a watch and submitting ATO inputs for the Marines on an amphib. Now that is a good deal. And yes, the sarcasm is intended.

    D-Day and Naval Aviation (VCS-7)

6 June Allied Invasion of Normandy—Seventeen Naval Aviators taken from aviation units on battleships and cruisers were assigned to bombardment duty as part of VCS-7. Parts Incorporated in a Flight Suit

I stopped cutting the tips off my flight gloves. I had one acquaintance who was in a fuel fire with the canopy open (A-6 land). He ended up with bad burns everywhere but where he had Nomex. Then, a RIO I knew shelled out of a burning Tomcat. He had gloves on but sleeves rolled up and ended...

Lest we forget: June 4th 1942

Just scored a copy of John Ford's "Battle of Midway" documentary for $5 on Amazon. It is only 18 minutes long but the legendary director filmed it from atop the power plant on Midway island during the Japanese attack. It was awarded the Best Documentary Oscar for 1942. Lest we forget: June 4th 1942

On 4 June 1942, 51 torpedo planes attacked the Japanese fleet. They consisted of 41 TBD Devastator's from the carriers, 6 TBF Avengers and 4 B-26 Maruaders from Miday. Four TBD's made it back to USS Enterprise, two B-26's and one TBF made it back to Miday. OF the 120 men who flew in those...

Has anyone ever actually witnessed this ritual?

"Ditch card" is for doing the "ditch" aka Suez Canal. With all the East Coast boats going to C5F, lots of people doing that now. No partying now due to ATFP (we did steel beach on my 1998 transit) though. Not a Caterpillar here but a life member (#4582) of the Martin Baker Tie Club.

    Death by .ppt!

I remember doing Air Wing Fallon with acetate and overhead projectors. 90% of the planning time was spent actually planning, not making all the fonts the same, and we actually had time to have a beer after work since planning took about half the time.

    The T-39 and Pensacola

    USS Murtha?

From another board: LPD 26... It will take Marines to hostile shores, dump them on the beach without support, immediately leave, refuse to resupply them, then broadcast propganda about how evil those same Marines are. It also comes with an oversized, unused flight deck. JANAP...

Days from raising right hand, serious doubts or just cold feet?

Exactly, Naval Officer first, NA/NFO second. You can conceivably get to 20+ years with just three flying tours after flight school, ie. JO, Deptartment Head, CO/XO. In fact, more flying tours might hurt your chances of getting to 20+ based on the Navy's need for well-rounded officers. So, you...

The Glocpilot and the Princess (April's Fool or what?)

Personally, I think she is an idiot. Civilian world runs on first names. My command has tones of civilians (both GS and contractor) and I call them by their first name and they call me by mine (or my callsign). I call the O-6's and flags Sir and Ma'am as required. Anybody who uses "princess" in...

    Pics from Iwo Jima

Got to spend the night on Iwo back in 2003 on a weather divert from the boat. No tour since we did not have time or a request in. I will say that seeing that island was a beautiful site after flying a bingo profile for 350 nm. Took 3k of gas before we started the bingo and landed with 3k.

    Best Naval Aviation movies

Here is one about the Navy that bought us the angled deck, steam catapult, and fresnel lenses, then abandoned it all to fly Harriers. :) Nothing like flying into a battleship's flak at a breathtaking 100 kts in a biplane.

    Navy vs Air Force

Bob is highlighting the reality of the Navy. It is the challenge that drives us, not the uniformity. OK, here is a summation of my varied, but never dull career. ~800 A-6E hours, ~1200 EA-6B hours, 485 traps 12 years at Whidbey (3 fleet squadron tours, 2 RAG student tours, 1 RAG instructor...

    Navy vs Air Force

Well, the first post sounds like it was written by a SWO. If I had to generalize about SWO's, they are all bitter and angry (just kidding for our SWO brethern). But the surface Navy bears even less relation to Tailhook aviation that the USAF does. If the second post (Bob Norris) makes you...

    Car choice and moving

Hey, the Avalanche gets 18mpg on the highway (used to get 20 before I moved to VA and got stuck with crappy E10 gas) and the Corvette gets 20mpg (Quadrajet and overdrive). Looking at an LS swap for the Corvette so I should be able to get 25+. :)
