Not true. I had 20/70 nearsightedness before I applied to OCS. Paid for laser surgery, a waiver, and am about to be winged. I had to wait 6 months after surgery and pay for it out of my own pocket. It was worth every penny.

On the older ones in Corpus the GPS was pre-programmed IIRC. There was a preloaded Flight Plan and data set from 2007 or something like that. You could only load up what they had for the I2505 GPS-sim. Remember trainer 13? The dead-zone was a good two inches from center and the trim changed...

The Corpus sim guys are great. Unless you show up not knowing your stuff (which is always a problem), they'll treat you fairly.
