    ADM Stavridis writes

I know people who are, for lack of better terms, as ensigns or second lieutenants, near-experts on vague topics like Naval Rearmament in the 1930s or have tons of experience in running businesses or managing large organizations, who although they'd have almost no sea-time or street-cred in the...

    TIMS at home

I know people who have it on their laptops. It has been pretty useful on occasion to do stuff like ASAPS, NAVFLIRs, Leave/Liberty requests and such. Day-to-day, I'd say get it if you can. Why not? It doesn't hurt.

    Job question (for significant other)

Depending on your timing, Pensacola could get almost as cold as Tennessee. Don't put your sweaters away when you head on down there :p

A good time not to be a Sixth Fleet staffer...

Seriously. A lot of influential Russians forget that the Soviet Union broke up twenty years ago. There's some serious denial among the old hardliners and, disturbingly enough, a lot of younger nationalists, that the USSR is gone for good. Libya, and by extension any nation that opposes the...

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery

I should get some pics of cleaned-up, freshly-painted Mentors to illustrate that for our T-6 flying friends in Whiting. With a side-by-side of the inside...too bad you can't smell the cockpit from the picture. Then they'd get the authentic experience!

My Naval Career Lasted 2 months before it ended

Wow man I'm so sorry to hear that. The silver lining is that the Navy helped you fix a potentially serious medical problem that would've probably bankrupted you otherwise. I don't know if things happen for a reason, but maybe passing out at OCS saved you. Don't shortchange yourself. Go get...

    Rhabdomyolysis Waiver

You can always work with your OR to work with the system while you get a second written opinion through a civilian doctor. I don't know the waiver process myself , but your OR should know and if he/she is good, can get the ball rolling to put in for the waiver. I saw some friends at OCS get...

    Advantages for Enlisted vs officer?

You don't have to bump, we see ya. This has been answered a few times on here, but here's the short and sweet. "Will I get more respect as an senior officer if I started out as enlisted first?" - Depends. In general, an officer is an officer. You earn respect through example. Some priors...

    F-22As... For the USMC?

Marinemike, I am obviously making the mistake of being far too general in my comments. I was probably on hour 10 of my 12 hour watch that night I posted it so I should've maybe re-read that a few times before posting. I'll try to stay away from generalities from now on, especially when...

You're probably right. My memory fails me at the moment. I need to do more reading.

    F-22As... For the USMC?

Boomer I didn't say it can't STO, or that it needs more runway. From what I read, it has problems with doing the same dirt-field type thing that the Harrier can, and the flight decks on LHA/LHDs may need to be reinforced to handle the F-35s different style of T/O. I'm not claiming to be an...

    F-22As... For the USMC?

I'm not kicking him at all, just letting him know why people are replying the way they are. I'm more than happy to discuss the topic with him. No one loves a better debate than me. I think the USMC is probably going to wind down its procurement of fixed wing TACAIR in the future. It's a...

    The basics of API

I was in the same boat. Those guys can teach a rock to float with weights attached. I almost drowned twice before API, sucked at swimming, had no confidence in the water, etc. A few weeks at Hold Swim did wonders. Though I had to work at the tower jump (just let yourself "start" to drown...

What happens at Tahoe doesn't stay at Tahoe; What would Gramps say?

I'm seeing a trend though. If the CO does it/condones it, it's gonna happen. I hope they at least got a good shot before they took the dip.

    DADT repealed

^^^Exactly Phrog. As with most things, the tone of the transition totally depends on the leadership. How much dissent they're willing to tolerate, how they're going to handle the logistics and berthing, and the flood of issues that will come along with the changing of the policy. I am glad the...

    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

That was the single best night of OCS. I think my class was the last to do it. I vaguely remember hearing about someone seeing it and being quite irate that we were doing this, and had no idea it was a "tradition" amongst candios.

Umm... I think I understand what's trying to be said here. But I think it needs to be clarified a bit. "Discuss here about what you wish for your children. Army officer, pilot... something else ??? :p " I tried.

    Career Advice

There are many many jobs in the aviation community, in India, or elsewhere. Your biggest hurdle is knowing English, for international work, so you're good there. You have to be more specific if you're looking for career advice. All I know is you work in IT, live in India, and like airplanes.

Deja Vu - the Mega oft-repeated question: Differences Between USMC and Naval Aviation

And the mighty hammer of the mods has struck! Maybe we can do this for all those recurring questions. I think we should have a popup show up to every new registered user, blacks out the background, flashes, and has a FAQ link to the questions no one wants to answer ever again on this site...

    F-22As... For the USMC?

Vigil, I'm sure you're well-meaning and I can see you probably have a legitimate academic reason for coming here, but if someone here gives you advice or answers your question, best adopt the attitude of just saying "Thanks" or at least directly replying without any addenda. The reason you're...

    IFS Gouge

I guess it was the 6+ hrs of daily clicking through that inane computer-learning software that made me think that if I didn't have the chance to stop it, go in front of my tv, sit on my couch, crack open a beer... I'd murder someone. At least it was only two weeks.

    IFS Gouge

I thought IFS suddenly got hard for the people who were now being forced to take the tests and courses in the building rather than doing it at home. I remember the academics being quite a bit more daunting than I expected. I did well , but it did surprise me. I didn't have to take the course in...

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

I don't know if we'd ever be fully replaced by Skynet and the Predator mafia. There will always be a need for manned aircraft. Even so, the idea of unmanned systems taking up the majority of aircraft is a very likely scenario it seems. Let's just hope we're not so naive as to let these...

    IFS Gouge

IFS still results in a lot of attritions, if anything because of the need to sit in that classroom all day and do 6 hours worth of mandatory computer-based learning every day. Plus some people find out aviation isn't for them. Works out.

    Am I going too far?

You're just excited. Have fun. Enjoy it. I nerd out pretty often on aviation stuff, and other much dorkier things. I did a lot of research prior to OCS in particular. I always do a lot of searching online and reading posts and asking questions. It's normal to be interested in your career...

    Insider Scoop on Navy OCS

I wish we had the ropes course. When I was leaving I heard rumors they were going to construct it. That's just plain awesome. Anyone else remember being put in the "rest position" by GySgt Stahl? I felt my sinuses were going to burst wide open after a minute like that.

    The basics of API

It depends on the needs of the Training Wings at Corpus and Whiting. You can put in for one or the other (or Vance if you feel masochistic), but recently TW-4 in Corpus has been asking for more students. Unless you've got follow-on orders to Whiting because you're married, you will probably end...

    Looking for realistic opinions

^^ I agree with SynixMan here. Your package is fine. Retake the ASTB. It's not super low, there are pilots with that score but every little bit helps. Study a bit more and do it again. Remember that timing is everything in the military and there's no way for us to tell if there was even a...

    Year Long Wait for API

Silly question/threadjack on the way. I don't know much about the civilian flight certification process beyond what I learned in IFS. I know I need a PPL to qualify to earn my commercial on the civilian side. When taking the FAA equivalency post-winging, the commercial qualifies me to do all...

    Year Long Wait for API

I've met one or two Marines doing their PPL at Skywarrior after doing IFS. I don't know if they went through IFS there, but for some reason they decided that school was worth their money. Not my first choice, but maybe they were masochists?

    1. Pretty much a tentative offer. They've basically said "we think you're worth offering this job to, so we're gonna forward it along to stamp everything else out". The real solid offer is the FS. Nothing is set in stone until you get your commission, and even then, there are unforeseeable...
