    USN Naval Aviator Number

I thought naval aviator numbers were more of helo thing of late. I had heard it was resurrected in the early 2000's. Not much help I know.

    USMC TACAIR future

The only way you could do the math would be to know things that are unknowable: what squadron you would end up with, the personalities when you get there etc. Since you can't do that, listen Zippy and Schoolbubba: go F-35s. Honestly, your knowledge as an f-18 airframer is not going to help...

    USMC TACAIR future

I'll echo some of what Phrog is saying here. Transitioning is a tricky thing in the best of times. There's so many things that go into whether you're successful in your new MOS it's impossible to know for sure. Timing (as all have said) is obviously a huge one. It's not just timing in your...

Was flying for the Navy/Marines worth it?

Everybody touched on the work hours, standard military/bullshit etc. I'll say my worst days have come from the death of friends. If you stay long enough you'll know someone. The highs are so high because the lows are so goddamn low.

FAC Tour: The good and the bad

FAC Tour: The good and the bad

VMM guys are able to get FAC tours. Typically they look for you to be section lead but that isn't a requirement. Usually the monitor will try and get you back to your MAG for a few years but that's not set in stone either. They would be PCA or PCS orders based on the location of the battalion...

Retreating Blade Stall before VNE - loss of control

There is a story where the aircraft separated at the 410 section (where the ramp meets the fuselage) in flight and the pilots survived. I forget which book it I read about it in, maybe Bonnie Sue. The Phrog had a history of breaking apart at the 410 in the 60's.

Retreating Blade Stall before VNE - loss of control

Purely anecdotal but I've stalled the aft head of a phrog and it manifested as a good shudder and about a rapid 20 degree nose up attitude. Very uncomfortable but we recovered in a few seconds by dropping collective and rolling out of the turn. As for which way it will roll I'm not sure. We...

    All things MV-22 Osprey

Another good Gazette article that articulates much of the discussion we've been having. However, I didn't write this...I claim no title;) https://www.mca-marines.org/gazette/2016/04/mv-22

    All things MV-22 Osprey

This is what I was driving at. There aren't enough flight hours to do this and the rest of the T&R. This "Harvest Plopter" idea is a cart before the horse scenario. We don't have the readiness to do the shit we're currently tasked with let alone an entirely knew skill set. Now we're starting...

    All things MV-22 Osprey

That money would be better spent on building better readiness/parts we need to get more birds in the air. We don't need to make assault support pilots into shooters.

    Ospreys vs Rotors

I'll see if I can answer your questions. I'm a phrog transition guy so I've seen both sides of the story. Helo pilots aren't jealous, they just don't know what they're talking about most of the time when it comes to another airframe. The Osprey isn't a helicopter, it's a tiltrotor. It does...

    NEWS UAV 'Combat' Flight Time?!

The way the OIR requirement is written it pretty much rules out aviation unless, as you said, it's an exceptionally long deployment to hit the 60 "day" mark. I wouldn't be surprised if they change it for strike guys but assault trash like my friends and I will likely just continue to tally air...

    Sensitivity Training for Marines

I don't see anybody arguing that this isn't going to happen. Higher has dictated that it's going to happen. Fine. We will execute. However your statements implied a changing/lowering of the standards. That absolutely can't be allowed to happen under any circumstances.

    Sensitivity Training for Marines

Pags, combat isn't hard because it hasn't been thought about hard enough to make it easy. The argument you made isn't a slippery slope, it's a cliff.

How to Know If You Really Want to Fly?

Yeah man don't sweat the 'is this for me' type stuff. If you think you'll like it go for it. If you don't you'll spend the rest of your life asking 'what if'. It won't be easy, but if it were everybody would do it. I can guarantee this if you do it: you'll learn things about yourself most...

Sorry I don't have any gouge man. I will say if you're up against the board and you need to get pme complete in a year the blended seminar program is the way to go. Culture in the Wing

To echo what has already been said here: in the assault support community we are very aware that our sole purpose is to support the Marine on the ground. Navy CSAR det gets rescue

We did an entire 1.0 VMM in support of AT last year. It was eye opening in many ways. It also was a great primer on how everybody else does TRAP/PR. Glad to see the Navy were the ones flying the 60s on this one. They're definitely better positioned location wise execute this one.

V-22 Chosen to be the new COD

I'm hoping the CV-22 det model can help the Marine Corps figure that part out. This airplane doesn't need to tied to ships the way we did with the HMM. The Marine Corps needs to get away from the inexplicable need to shoehorn 12 Ospreys onto ARG shipping.

V-22 Chosen to be the new COD

Most controllers understand what MV-22 is capable of so I've never had an issue with confusion as to how or what I would do in the terminal environment. We tend to keep it simple due to the rotor wash considerations and just land on the active runway abeam the taxiway. In talking to...

That's because the studs don't know shit. It's not their fault though. Over all the different stages, weather, medical, different squadrons with different paces, and sticking points throughout flight school there's a good chance you won't all select as a group. That is if they don't all end up as UAS operators.

It's going to be explained to you by whoever gives you the essay. Using a 3 color pen and having every other word a different color was another method...other than that you've got most of them. V-22 Chosen to be the new COD

It does. It's very noticeable when you lose it landing to a spot. It's there but not as noticeable when taking off, probably due to the angle of disks while transitioning to forward flight.

V-22 Chosen to be the new COD

The flaps stay in AUTO for both STOs and running landings. There's very few situations where the pilots actually need to manipulate the flaps. The aircraft does well with run on landings. Roll out obviously depends on weight and ambient conditions. The aircraft actually calculates the numbers...

V-22 Chosen to be the new COD

STO or RTO (short take-off/rolling take-offs) are the preferred take off method for the plopter. The standards are 60 or 75 STO named for the degree at which your nacelles are positioned. I was told by Bell/Boeing engineers that the Osprey can internal the F-35 motor with "minor cabin modifications". I'm thinking that means more than folding up the troop seats but that's what I was told. As for putting rockets on it? Yeah we'll see.

I use them and love them. I have custom fit and the foamies. I prefer the latter. It's a big improvement in the Phrog due to how noisy the forward tranny is. Without them my ability to hear during hour 4 of a 5.5 is pretty diminished.
