    AMEX Platinum

While I can see the benefit in other locations, in DFW, the USO is awesome!! It's on the 'right' side of security, so if you have a layover, you can get some free chow and sodas, watch TV in a comfy chair and they even have beds so you can take a nap and don't have to deal with TSA again...

    USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) - Status

I remember when some Air Force DV's came out to the JFK to see flight ops. They were shocked (shocked, I say) that we had sailors writing backwards on a grease board down in Air Ops. The joked how in the Air Force they had computer programs to do that instead of a sailor. Fast forward to...

Advice for SNA switching to SNFO

Like in CRM/ACT (or whatever term is en vogue now) the method of transmission is just as important as the info you're trying to convey. Is there times to use tough love, yeah. When someone is asking a fellow member their experiences of transferring from SNA to SNFO in a thread entitled...

Advice for SNA switching to SNFO

So someone who wanted to be a pilot since he was 5 got DQ'd, he's upset and you're saying he needs to "get over the fucking heart break"? He never said anything disparaging about NFO except that his dream was to be a pilot and he did not achieve his dream. He then asked someone who went...

    Random aircraft sightings

The aircraft at Jax right now are from ATAC which has the Hawker Hunters and Kfirs (http://www.atacusa.com/atac_aircraft.html); Phoenix Air is flying a Lear And King Air (http://phoenixair.com/milops.html); VFA-204 is flying legacy Hornets (not sure of the variant since they borrowed some jets...

    Commissaries Closing?

That is changing. 8,000 patients on Prime who are seeing doctors outside the gate at NAS Jax are being pulled back into the MTF. Other MTF's are doing the same but with different numbers. This is purely a cost savings measure.

    Commissaries Closing?

With the present capability (manning) with military medicine, DOD would need to hire a lot of more doctors (especially specialists) and acquire or build more medical facilities if every dependent were forced to only go to an MTF. I believe your question was rhetorical, but after hearing from...

    Commissaries Closing?

Just to add a fact, the Exchange does get some funding from the DOD but only to defray the cost of overseas shipping. Otherwise, it's a self-supporting enterprise.

Mental decline in high-flying military pilots

I was told there would be no math here.... Since the moon's gravity is one-sixth that of Earth, does that mean a U-2 pilot's "appendage" is one-sixth of a helo pilot's?????

    Disappointed in NEX

New rule about deglamorizing alcohol. The hours it can be sold is limited and alcohol can only occupy a certain percentage of square footage of the store. Hard liquor and beer and wine are treated differently, so the quickie mart on NAS Jax had to remove hard liquor and it had to replaced...

    Disappointed in NEX

My expirience is you can't get "cheaper" electronics at the NEX. You want a top of the line Samsung, they got it. You want a $200 tv for the spare bed room, no joy.

So, HTs now have a new selection out of Advanced?

It deploys on a small boy as a tactical asset under the command of that ship's CO. The Triton (follow-on to BAMS-D) will be tasked by someone way above the ship's CO do much bigger picture tasking than tactical recce. It also can be flown into an area where the threat or political...

Extended stays at the hold short for NAS Whidbey Growlers?

R1, I can't speak to Whidbey, but at NAS Jax the problem with short field gear is when the P-3 and now the P-8 land on it. We tend to get the short field gear knocked out because the gear is relatively close to the TDZ, especially with the VP FRS here and some of the landings are quite...

So, HTs now have a new selection out of Advanced?

The Triton plan is to have pilots go there for their shore tour. Since it can be flown from any control station in the world, it can be "shore duty" since you're home every night. Tough to do that with this though....

    Service Selection-NROTC Class of '14

One issue here is that the Navy (or other Service) controls the curriculum. At an ROTC school or through OCS, the Service has very little to no control of the education and lifestyle of the students. Don't underestimate the appeal of almost total control!

Remembering API - Back In The Day...

The H-3 pilots did water landings in the FRS. There is urban legend of two great H-3 water stories. One is a single engine failure off the coast of Jax. The pilots landed in the water and water taxied it all the way to the beach. They then walk up to the door of Carol Alt's house and ask...
