Not avoiding anything. You said that this process sent a signal that our military is not held accountable for crimes (alleged) in a war zone.
I responded with information illustrating the process. You don't think the outcome of the process was appropriate.

Just like you incorrectly assumed my service history, you incorrectly assume my personal ethical feelings on the matter.

Good luck to you though, and I mean that sincerely.

Go back and read where I questioned the process. I questioned the decision making behind it. You absolutely are avoiding the crux of the issue. There were crimes committed. I never had an issue with the process. POTUS intervened and it was wrong. The former POTUS was wrong with Manning, and multiple other cases, and the current POTUS is wrong on this case.

You spent your time in a stack hundreds or thousands of feet in the air and not on the deck. Nor apparently did you spend it studying why this lack of accountability in certain types of warfare will harm future efforts. That’s all I really need to know.

You can sit here and say “yup, this was all done procedurally correct, and POTUS has the ability to do what he wants” but also agree that the decision was poor and has effects larger than a news bit or Facebook post.

Not really. Let me summarize this article in two sentences:

SECDEF wants Trump to keep his hands out of DoD's Wheaties. Liberal paper finds DoD insiders who will openly disagree with POTUS under conditions of anonymity.

More at 11!

Apparently that liberal paper was sleeping on job for the entire 8 year tenure of the Obama administration.

Y'all are absurd. Oddly enough, came across the same exact article Brett just posted. Thought it would be an interesting extension of this discussion, as Brett did. Then immediately remembered, 'oh wait, (the exact dudes that ended up posting) are going to (do exactly what they did), so I did a pretty quick search (which is encouraged periodically around here) for 'Esper Trump' and most major media outlets covered this story and its ramifications. Except for Fox, though, so I guess it's BS.

Before you haul off on an ad hominem attack, I would note for the sake of contributing something to the discussion as opposed to just complaining, I think the ability to think critically, to interrogate sources for truth, etc., will be one of the most critical skills in the information age. Couple the departure of the news media (nearly the entire thing, left and right both) from the reading of the news and into opinions about the news with gerrymandering and the role of money in politics, and we're not heading in the right direction as a country. /end rant.

Can't bust the Chief for taking a picture when the whole Navy is celebrating the picture of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's funeral...

@Notanaviator The problem is that many (most, really) Americans lack the critical thinking skills to discern the chaff from the wheat. This is why the IRC and similar disinformation efforts have been so effective. I know this makes me as an elitist in some people’s eyes.

Brett, I've been watching you go back-and-forth with Hozer and read the article you posted with the expectation that it was going to lend some insight into this 'process' you keep talking about but refuse to explain to anyone because your staff tour(s?) inside the beltway make you more enlightened than the rest of us peons.

Unfortunately, that was not the case.

However, at the end of the day I agree with Hozer...

The people who followed Gallagher's case will fall in three camps: those who think he got away with murder regardless of the verdict; those who think he should be crucified for taking a picture with a dead guy like Hotdogs; and those who think the whole thing is overblown and Gallagher should be pardened like Trump. Outside of the < 1% of the population that works inside the beltway or serves in the military, no one cares that the CNO and SECDEF are chaffed about Trump exercising the authority of the office of the President and breaking some unwritten rules of decorum.

You are calling a duck a duck. Many people are unwilling or are unable to accept this fact.

Reminds me, I ran into Eric Greitens in Norfolk at a training class, he's still wearing the trident.
Was his Trident withdrawn? I was at a corporate function a couple of years ago where he was the keynote speaker - he received $10k for his presence. It was very well received and the Trident was displayed everywhere.

I'm sure those corporate gigs all thoroughly vet their speaker's qualifications through PERS before designing their event materials. Pretty sure that's part of Title X.

I thought I read an article that said when he attempted to re-affiliate with the Navy, the SEALs would not allow him back into the community. Interesting if they wouldn't let you back into the community they would still allow you to wear the Trident.
