yea the rumor comes from the IPs. a little misinformation perhaps?:D

It may be a misunderstanding of the information by the stud of what's put out, not disinformation. Sometimes IPs may know of what's coming down the line, but it would be very specific to that point in time and can't be applied across the board.

Studs tend to hear what the want to hear sometimes.

Uh, yea, flying is flying though the Air Force can take the fun out of everything. Check out baseops.net and read up on Al Udeid...

Seriously, though, different cultures and attitudes effect everything--the Navy is a pretty laid back and relaxed when compared to a lot of things the Air Force does. Our Primary flight training is a perfect example: we work when we have to, and expect everyone to be responsible for their shit. 12 hour days are not a requirement, and we don't have to show up for work when not on the schedule. Not so true in the Air Force: you will be there for your 12 hour work day no matter what.

Also, who wants to keep their sleeves rolled down 24/7--esp. in Corpus Christi in the summer? That's gotta suck.

How does this compare to the Marines? I'm assuming they're more hardcore in most ways than the other services. What is the quality of life like in the Marines? Do you get to deploy to air bases as well as on carriers?

I'm currently in AFROTC and I've read up on a lot on baseops. Between that and all the nuclear mishaps and leadership changes it's embarrassing and I'm not even in the service yet.

A friend suggested that I check out Marine opportunities, but can't offer any advice since he hasn't even left for OCS yet.

Any help is appreciated.

PS- What do you all think of Generation Kill and the PBS series Carrier?

More "hardcore" in what ways?

(2) That's the truth. Selected with a NSS in the low 60's and didn't get my any of my choices. It's all about timing and needs of the Navy.

Fixed this based on my experiences.:D:D

You get what you get. You'll learn to enjoy it or not. Suck it up and get it done anyway. Is there really anything else to say about this?

Sorry, that was pretty ambiguous. I go to a military school so there's a big mix from all the service ROTCs and prior E's and all that. Seeing anyone in a Marine commissioning program or an active duty guy going to school, there's a noticeable difference in adherence to military discipline, drill, that kind of stuff.

My AFROTC unit feels even more lax than my child's play military high school.

You spend most of your non-deployed time at an airbase. Deployed, usually an amphibious ship for helos, sometimes fixed wing will go on a carrier, however, many today end up deploying to bases in Iraq or Afghanistan.

I'm currently in AFROTC and I've read up on a lot on baseops. Between that and all the nuclear mishaps and leadership changes it's embarrassing and I'm not even in the service yet.

I wouldn't even worry about the high-echelon leadership issues yet, more about culture and QOL.

There's a separate thread on each of those shows.

:shake_125 Tomorrow is the day! I'm so anxious, I can't possibly fall asleep right now. I can only imagine how the guys at TBS felt the night before they received their MOS's, at least I know I'm going to fly.

Studs tend to hear what the want to hear sometimes.

It's just a self defense mechanism. Blissful ignorance is occasionally more tolerable than accepting the truth. You say, "stupid deviations and sloppy airmanship put you in that situation, but I guess the recovery was good," and I hear, "blah blah blah...the recovery was good." Fuckin' A right it was good, I rock. :D

Before I get flamed, that's a joke.

Haha, that is very true. And while some instructors harp on you for everything, and give you decent/good grades, I've had instructors tell me "GREAT JOB" and "I have no comments for you" other than "keep it up". Then I look at the grade sheet: 1.0. No shit. That happened on one flight. Dude said the above quotes and gave me a flat 1.0. WTF?

He was a "santa clause" too. Then I had him for a night con O/I, said the same thing and he gave me a 1.25 or something. HUH??

Even better was the Aussie instructing at the RAG who liked to debrief studs after sims with a pink sheet peeking out from the junk jacket. Totally straight-up debrief, "this good, that not so good, try this, say that, technique only, blah blah," all the while the stud's eyeing that sliver of pink and waiting for the shotgun to the face. Instructor gives the "keep it up, press," and departs, so the stud can hurriedly pull out the pink sheet and see the "GOTCHA, SUCKER".

On the ragged line between funny and dick move. Funny if it's not you.

I had the same thing happen to me. Last two flights were a NVNAV out and in. No feedback on either hop, and the only debrief I received was "good flight congrats on being done." After checking the grade sheet later that evening I found that the grades were mostly mif and the comments said "Average flight." A few other things on the sheet were also described as average. The next day I asked for a proper debrief being that it was my last two flights in primary and I give a crap about my performance. The the instructer gave me a debrief saying, "brief sucked everything else was average." Then proceeded to do a little CYA had the wing unlock my completed grade record and wrote more bad comments to justify the numbers he gave. I was so pissed because being my last two flights I had no way to bounce back and make up for it. Luckily I was still able to get tailhook so it didn't have a huge impact, but it could have easily screwed me on a different week.

The brief I admit was not my best effort; however, the flight was pretty good. The only thing the instructor did was take a CTAF call at an unfamiliar field. I handled all other ATC communication.

For students still in primary: Rock the brief as there are some instructors that will hold the entire flight against you for it even if they decide to take you flying.

Maybe changing the comments (notice he didn't change your grades, according to you) was the wrong thing to do after the fact, but I don't see what's wrong with what he originally told you. Maybe it warranted a better debrief, but he said it was a good flight. An "average" N410x is a "good" flight. Most of the required items are a 4 except the landings (which aren't required), and if you made a 3 on them, that's "average" for a night flight. If you made MIF on "General Knowledge and Procedures," that's a 4, which is usually where briefing items get hit, so in that sense, he helped you.

We weren't there, so we can only read your side of things, but I wouldn't be so quick to discount an IP's comment just because you thought you were better than what he thought. And for what it's worth, I always found I had a hard time keeping a students attention during a debrief after their last flight, so that might have been part of his mindset. Good on you for wanting to continue to improve, I'm just sayin'.

Harrier and Gator,

I totally agree with the replies you both gave. I guess because it was not the marks and comments I had been receiving previously I discounted it as more of a stan issue. Who knows I could have needed the kick in the nuts, but after talking to some students who flew the same flight that night it seemed as if I was being nailed on things that weren't even considered in their flights or their IP backed them up on some things without question and didn't dock them for it. This was just meant to reinforce Otto's point about stan problems.
