Certainly, as Webmaster, you must realize that 80% (a made-up stat) of the posts on this site are done by high-school sophomores that have a twinkle in the eye that is Naval/Marine Aviation.

Does that mean you (or one of the prospective future naval aviators) should pay more credence to them rather than the winged guys, especially when it comes to how selection really works? Me thinks not.

It seems to me like the folks who sit back and say "ahhh, well I don't want jets cause it's too much work" just don't really get it.

Students who say that are usually the ones who haven't done well so far in the syllabus. After all, if you don't put in the effort to do well (whether it's full bore or half assed) and get the good results, then the kid next to you may "steal" that desired slot (be it helo, P-3, E-6, etc.).

Ok, let me spell out 2 basic concepts a lot of you don't understand:

(1) Your best may not be as good as somebody else's half-assed effort. Harsh, but true.

(2) The Navy doesn't care if you did your absolute, soul-consuming best or dropped 17 strokes of your handicap in flight school: as long as big Navy fills the slots then they are happy (and no, they don't care which, if any, you occupy).

Seriously, stop sweating this. You will get what you get and it will all be o.k.

(1) Yup that's basically what I thought. I saw guys working three times as hard as me and just hanging on. Not that I didn't work hard because put forth my best effort but it just all came easier to me and have yet to be "stressed out" by flight school.

(2) That's the truth. Selected with a NSS in the low 60's and didn't get my #1 choice. It's all about timing and needs of the Navy. Just figure out what else you would really be happy with so if you don't get your #1 choice you are not too bummed out in the end. :D

Worried about selection? Gosh... that is SO 1 month ago! Ahh... advanced is going to nice without the constant "WHAT is your GPA" and "WHAT are you going to put down for selection??" questions from other studs in the squadron. :)

Yeah, you'll have bigger things to worry about.

Geez man, it's been so long you forgot its call "NSS" ... you salty dog you. ;)

Hey, he's Primary complete, but he's about to get a serious education in Advanced.

You don't know what you don't know. I love playing that game, back to studying....

Not all helos are created/percieved equal....so that's still there.

HC no longer exists, and I don't really get the rest of your comment, for that matter.

HC still lives in our hearts.

You don't have an NSS until you are syllabus complete. Until then, people try to find out what someone's GPA was in the various blocks of training. ;)

I was making a comment on how even in advanced, there are still things outside of your control that you worry about... like where you'll go for the RAG if you're in a community with more than one.

And I stand corrected, sorry. My apologies to any HSC as well as old scool HC bubbas.

I was being ticky tack about it. Grades will still factor in when it comes to platform on the helo side. There are still PLENTY of things out of your control.

First of all im about 10 weeks from selecting.

Going back to the original question...this is what i have learned in my months from being at primary...

Good grades while they are great and all really don't have that much to do with your selection. Its more along the lines of who is selecting with you.

1) I saw a guy get jets with a 56 a couple weeks back.
2) I saw a guy get denied jets with a 68 a couple months back and got his second choice because he was selecting during a week when there was only 1 jet slot and a guy in TX had a 70+ NSS. SNA requested mass to the skipper and made it known that he didn't think he deserved to get helos. SNA's reputation followed him to south field and now he is known as that guy who doesn't want to be there.
3) Two guys had 61 NSS's and where flipping out because they both wanted jets. It just so happened that the only 2 jets slots for that week went to our squadron and both of these guys got what they wanted.
4) Lately, everyone that has been selecting out of primary from whiting has been getting there first choice, but this has absolute no bearing on what will happen in the future.

Like i said i select in 10 weeks and hopefully i don't select against the 70+ NSS rock stars. Study hard and do your best and the cards will fall where they will.
