Interesting facets to the 2021 downfall of Afghanistan. Needs more corroboration.

I have a feeling that the Taliban is reaching for legitimacy and have, in fact, taken. Panjshir city like Rokhah, but they haven’t secured anything.

CIA and DIA directors both mention Afghanistan in the same breath as talking about al Qaeda pursuing new attacks on the US homeland.

I kind of find it ironic that the general population associates Dems with 'doves.' However, Obama's liberal use of drone strikes largely went under the radar. I wonder how many people know that the vast majority of civilian casualties from drone strikes occured on his watch.

I don't recall any targeted high value individual being killed without knowing the names and their CV within a couple days. I haven't seen a public announcement of who these guys were. Very suspicious.

Obama's increased use of UAV strikes was in large part not wanting to take prisoners'. Prisoners complicated his intention to empty Gitmo or worry about an "ally" having them escape from their prison. It increased collateral damage, and decreased humint from interrogations.

Civilian Voters: "We won't tolerate another 9/11! You have to stop the terrorists by any means necessary! And by any means, we mean any means that don't involve Boots On the Ground™. Because the news reporter and my college professor told me that Boots On the Ground™ are evil and bad. Because that means we have a Quagmire Forever War™."

Politicians and DoD leadership: "OK, got it. Hmm, how do we bust up terror plots WITHOUT putting an assault team in to kill or capture them? I know, airstrikes. But we need persistent ISR to have any hope of finding the terrorists in the first place, because good HUMINT involves Boots On the Ground™ and that won't get half of us re-elected. Hmm. Oh, I know . . ."

(Politicians and DoD leadership step up drone strikes because they basically have to to accomplish the first paragraph)

Trump escalated the drone strikes, while "unleashing" the commands with broader permissions on when to take the shot. They were very tight under Obama, as far as guaranteeing who the target was and getting permission. And they work.

Civilians: "We won't tolerate another 9/11!
What I find fascinating was the 1993 WTC bombing was actually worse than the 9/11 bombing in terms of goals and potential outcomes. I doubt Al Qaeda thought they could bring down the whole tower on 9/11, but in 1993 they were going for it all. If it had worked in 1993, the entire tower would have come down with zero escapes by anyone. Orders of magnitude higher death toll in the tower itself and in the surrounding buildings.

But the 1993 bombing didn't bring down the tower. So...no harm/no foul?

Why didn't that merit the response that 9/11 did? If the goal was just to prevent another attack? Obviously it wasn't just that.

Any lawyers here (sea or actual) able to comment on what would happen if he keeps having scheduling conflicts? The Senate has subpoena power but I wouldn’t think the Administrstion would like it go that route.

I’m also surprised no one has started a thread about the upcoming Woodward book which contains new information about the CJCS...

Because why would we have gone to war over a hypothetical? The tower didn't come down, so it ended up not being any different than any of the other relatively low-level car bombings or other terrorist randomness that went on throughout the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.
