I didn't turn my computer on the entire time there. Too bad, as I saw the P-3 in the break, and came by your aircraft later.

Huggy, that break was not intentional. I waved off because there was a stunt plane on the runway and on the way up to pattern altitude I ended up in formation. I'm looking for some pictures of that if you see any.

I apologize for the quality of the photos; I was in the west side of Aeroshell Square (or whatever they called it this year) and all I had with me was my point & shoot when you came in. Better photos might be hard to come by; most eyes were on the other 4 engined prop aircraft that you shared the pattern with ;)

Out of curiosity, what are you doing for lodging?
Not going this year, but one year when we hosted a booth there and were on official mil travel, we had done the math and figured out we could rent a houseboat for one of the local lakes and jet skis for ship-to-shore connection and still come in way under what per diem would be for hotel rooms.

The year prior we rented a house. The year before that we rented an RV and camped at airfield. A blast, but got exhausting.

I unfortunetly was unable to go this year - I have a number of colleagues there - and a number of our unit Reservists are there on TDY earning points. CAP is in charge of all the marshalling at Air Venture - under the designation "Blue Beret". The AF funded a brand new 60' tall RF antennae to support the CAP RF voice network for teh marshalling force (mostly manned by cadets). These cadets train for months learning how to properly marshall aircraft and direct planes to appropriate parking spots - think "yellow shirts".

While the AF has a very decent presence at Air Venture this year, AFSOC is deliberately making a marquis appearance - with 9 airframes coming to Air Venture from various AFSOC units - including the brand new C-145 Combat Coyote which will be both flight and static displayed for the public. The CC of AFSOC, Lt Gen Jim Slife will be there on TDY as well with his staff (apparently a great helo dude).

Very cool. Good gouge. I’m currently on leave so no per diem for me, and my uniform of the day is t-shirt and shorts. I’ll be sure to check out the AFSOC stuff. Any other ideas of what to look for while I’m there with my oldest kid, fire away.

Wait…they are sending a Sky Truck? Basically a Polish COD aircraft…there better be some cool AFSOC stuff like a plopter there!

I have a few friends up there now. I will try to make it next year via rotor travel.

Looks like there was a Piper that went for a skid down the runway yesterday. These controllers are damn good, never missing a beat.

They are a well oiled machine down there - they have seen it all! Look how quickly they deploy the flatbed trailer and crne and lift that sucker carefully using nylon strapping and away it goes and the runway is open again. Impressive.
