Its just a process to verify if your qualified to meet that clearance level.

You will update your SF-86 and then have a phone interview or two where they basically just run down your SF-86 with you line by line to confirm that everything is correct. This is when they will also ask for references to follow up with. After that, they will proceed with your investigation which will take a few months. They may or may not notify you if you've been successfully cleared so assume no news is good news, especially if you're still moving through the pipeline.
