Do or do not... there is no try-Master Yoda
Good evening from Hawaii. I am new to the site so I will start with some stats/info:

36 years old
active duty 7 years/ AT2
OAR: taking test next Tuesday
B.S. Aeronautics / 3.89
M.S. Information Management / 4.0

Awards: Sailor of the Year, 3 NAM's, 1 FLOC, Arizona State University Outstanding Graduate student/leadership
award, magna cum laude

Evaluations: EP, EP, EP

LORs: O-6, O-4, E-9

Extra curricular: Habitat for Humanity, USO, elementary school tutor/mentor, 2 honor societies, MWR Treasurer

I will be applying for the IW and Intel board in July. My question comes from the fact that my GPA from over 12 years ago is not so great, but since all college credit is calculated, my cumulative undergrad GPA dips to 2.7. Will a board take under consideration that these grades were attained many years before I enlisted in the Navy? Secondly, can earning my masters make up for this deficiency?

I would appreciate anyone's help and guidance. Since I am active duty I don't have an OR for advice and guidance. Thanks.

The Navy looks at all the college course you have attempted, so you will need transcripts from all the colleges you have attended. The GPA points from your Masters Degree, Bachelors Degree, and Associates Degree/Community College (if you have one) will be added up and the average of the three will be the GPA you report. For example, I had a 3.96 GPA for my AA degree and a 3.9 GPA for my BA; as a result, the GPA that is reported to the IDC board is a 3.93.

I am definitely aware of the cumulative aspect of GPA calculation. I am really looking for the impact of grades received over 10 years ago. My masters GPA is 4.0 and I graduated with a 3.89 for my B.S. When I include the college courses from 10 years ago, I have a 2.7 cumulative (my grades were not impressive to say the least out of high school.

Based on my understanding, every single course taken for credit after high school, whether counting towards a degree you earned later or not, must be accounted for and included. I had to submit transcripts from a total of five colleges, some where I had taken only one course, when I applied to OCS.

If anyone has better gouge on that, though, please correct if wrong.

On the APSR, the only GPA that will be there is the highest education done. So if your overall GPA in undergrad is a 3.2 and Master's is a 3.6, it will show Master's Degree with a 3.6 GPA on the APSR.

As for GPA calculations, we do separate sheets for different levels of education. So if you went to 3 schools for undergrad, that will all be compiled into one GPA calc sheet. If you then moved on to complete a Master's or beyond, that will be added to another GPA calc sheet. So if you had a masters or beyond essentially you'll have 2 GPAs being sent to the board.

Is this a recent change? I can't tell you have many kits we had kicked back because the GPA on the GPA calculation worksheet didn't match the GPA on the APSR, so much so that we had an email sent out from NRC specifying that the GPA on the APSR (box whatever) had to match the GPA on the calculation worksheet.

No recent change on my end.

No recent change on my end.

The reason that we were told that back then was for the following 2 scenarios, both of which I have seen but I will give examples that make the math easy.

applicant 1 attends CC "A" gets AA has 2.0 GPA, attends 4 yr college "X" gets BA/BS has 4.0 at this college, this college doesn't include CC GPA so his BA/BS final GPA shows 4.0

applicant 2 attends CC "A" gets AA has 2.0 GPA attends 4 yr college "Y" gets BA/BS has 4.0 at this college, this college does include CC GPA so his BA/BS final GPA shows 3.0

upon first look who is the better candidate? one has 4.0 on the front of the APSR, the other has 3.0

Thank you to all for the clarification. Hopefully the board will view my application favorably as I have taken the Navy and school very seriously.

I just took the OAR and scored a 56 which I am not particularily thrilled about. For IW and Intel, will I be competitive with this score, or should I look at retaking in 91 days? Again, here are the stats I am going in with. Thanks.

I was PROREC'd for Intel with a 53 and I was thrilled with that score. Unless you're a math god, I think 56 is a heck of a score - well done. Not to mention your background looks pretty impressive. I wouldn't sweat it.

I received an email stating the IDC board will meet on May 5. Hopefully it is true and everyone received the same information.
