    Squadron Vehicles

There's a whole market for those horns out there. Look up "train horn car" on YouTube sometime for some amusement. I seriously considered buying one to encourage the snowbirds to not drive 38 mph side by side in a 55 mph zone around here. My wife was concerned that I might cause a heart...

The Great, Constantly Changing Video Thread...

First of all, it's TRA.... And the only things ever said as a result are: 1) No. Or, 2) SAFETY VIOLATOR!!!!
  5. Harrier Dude

    Which watch?

I think that's a bit of an overstatement. I've loved mine, and when we bought them (for about 70% off), it wasn't nearly that much of a redass. When you get something directly from the factory at such a huge discount, it's hard to bitch too much about the wait.

Seeking info on VAW-120 C-2 #631 with black flames nose art.

It's a chopper thing. Phases are a huge deal in their world, even requiring an FCF on completion. They try very hard to stagger their phases amongst aircraft so that all of them (or a bunch of them) don't go into phase at once, crippling the squadron. For TACAIR, we generally just knock the...

Since no one else will ask "Where are the carriers?"

Concur, but as a UFL participant, I think it's safe to say that it would be an all hands event and quite ugly regardless.
  9. Harrier Dude

Since no one else will ask "Where are the carriers?"

This is not an either/or scenario. We'll need both. Lots of both. Plus USAF and Army......and then some. 6 Harriers and a BLT aren't going to roll back the NK hordes by themselves and a CV can't hold any land.

Retirement and last flight in the Navy after 20 years....

In the Marine Corps, reservist or not, you will be charged with hazing. This is not an exaggeration, or a misinterpretation from higher. This comes straight from the top.

A-7 Corsair - Cockpit entrance and Canopy Strap

If you can't get into a Harrier without stepping on the seat (or in the intake!!) then you suck. It isn't difficult. I've ridden in the front of a Prowler, too and didn't step on the seat either, but that was markedly more difficult.

Retirement and last flight in the Navy after 20 years....

Amen on the Shiner, but I can't condone the blatant and hideously dangerous acts of hazing accompanying it. SAFETY VIOLATOR!!!!!!!! Congrats, though.

It sounds like AUX 2 or Bouge Field. Another gray area not directly covered under 3710. Are the X's painted on the runway? Or are they the flashing light carts?
  15. Harrier Dude

    Whidbey Island

I only ask because I have recently been drawn into a lengthy discussion on "closed field operations". The latest 3710 attempts to distinguish between "closed field=no tower/crash crew manned" and "closed field=big painted X's on the runway with weeds growing in the cracks". There's a huge...

USN may add conformal fuel tanks to F/A-18E/F fleet

They should probably concentrate on their assigned mission, as painful and tedious as it may be (not having done it). Especially if getting way outside of their swim lane is damaging their equipment.

Australia requests authority to purchase 24 more Super Hornets

We would rather have another one. That's not really debatable. What is debatable is whether or not the mission can be safely accomplished over thousands of sorties with just one and whether the total cost of adding another engine is worth it. Will there be engine failures? Yes. When they fail...

Unless its hauling pax/cargo for hire to exotic locales, it sure as hell won't be me. I don't really have a dog in this fight. I have my own concerns with the future of naval aviation, but single engine ops are pretty far down the list. I find it comical what certain people and communities...

Australia requests authority to purchase 24 more Super Hornets

Very well put! You certainly make excellent points about the viability of single engine aircraft off carriers. Thanks for sharing your vast experience with those of us that can only dream (nightmare?) about such a risky venture. How can the government do this to us?!?! There hasn't been a...

    Yuma Airshow

Yeah, I doubt it. I've learned more about airshows in the last six months, and really in the last week, than I previously knew in 20+ years of flying. Mainly, that our system works pretty well, and that there are still those who don't understand the system that are determined to pussify it. I...

    Yuma Airshow

Yeah, we did all that. I've spent all day with the FAA reps (actually, great people). The "certification" thing is made up. Good fitrep bullet, though.
  37. Harrier Dude

    Yuma Airshow

You have to brief that stuff in detail every day at every airshow anyway, so what's the point of being "certified?
  38. Harrier Dude

    Yuma Airshow

Remember, certification is MUCH more important than functionality or proficiency. That should be the shared motto of NAVAIR and the FAA.
  39. Harrier Dude

    Yuma Airshow

Ah, got it. Yeah, they're no big deal for our guys that have them. Missed the sarcasm. They were supposed to be getting "their FAA certification" this week, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. So yes, all we were getting (and got) was a static display. I think it had more to do with...

They're on our secure flightline right outside my office, so I doubt it. There's a T-34B parked between them now. Why would somebody need to stay with them all night? There's IRCM on almost every prop/chopper in the Marine Corps, including our newer OSA aircraft. Never been a problem.

    Yuma Airshow

Well, supposedly these are Bravos, and one of the pilots is married to the FA-18F pilot coming out for the airshow. I am assured that we will have a Rhino here, so go figure.
