That won't ever happen. The data by Consumer Reports shows battery degradation is mostly relatively insignificant. There was a lot of FUD around EV battery degradation that has turned out never to materialize.
The death of internal combustion engines for consumer and commercial ground transportation (save for recreational and enthusiast use) cannot come soon enough in my opinion. The planet is burning. We are dying. The house is indeed on fire. Thousands of people in Nepal just died because of human generated climate change. Electrification of society through solar, wind, nuclear and battery storage at scale is a moral imperative.
I do think I drive the finest automobile in the world.

My son and girlfriend came by in her Tesla with the latest self driving software update. I have to admit it was pretty cool. Just sit down, and tell it where you want to go. Nothing to start. No buttons to push, it just heads down the road, goes to the destination and parks. I never once felt like I needed to take over. Still, I'm not ready for an EV.
We have over ten years now of mass produced Teslas on the road now, and over 20 for hybrids, and the much talked about battery degradation has not been anywhere near the issue some scaremongers claimed they are. Tesla Model S/Model X cars only suffered 12% degradation after reaching 200,000 miles, not anywhere needing a replacement. And if you do actually need one there are a lot more options than the original manufacturer options, and those will likely get better as more and more EV's are sold.
Is it worth it even with a battery replacement? Every person is different but for many who opt for an EV or PHEV it can mean significant savings over an ICE-only vehicle.
