Since some of you like to throw the word liberal around like it is an insult, you might remember what it means:

Definition: [n] a person who favors a political philosophy of progress and reform and the protection of civil liberties
[n] a person who favors an economic theory of laissez-faire and self-regulating markets
[adj] tolerant of change; not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or tradition
[adj] showing or characterized by broad-mindedness; "a broad political stance"; "generous and broad sympathies"; "a liberal newspaper"; "tolerant of his opponent's opinions"
[adj] not literal; "a loose interpretation of what she had been told"; "a free translation of the poem"
[adj] given or giving freely; "was a big tipper"; "the bounteous goodness of God"; "bountiful compliments"; "a freehanded host"; "a handsome allowance"; "Saturday's child is loving and giving"; "a liberal backer of the arts"; "a munificent gift"; "her fond and openhanded grandfather"
[adj] having political or social views favoring reform and progress

That doesn't sound so bad to me.

So wait let me get this... because I'm conservative:
1. I dont like civil liberties?
2. I'm bound by authoritarianism?
3. I'm narrow minded?
4. I'm non-tolerant?
5. I'm literal?
6. I am a bad tipper?
7. I don't favor progress?

That is crap

Well, how about... if the machine aint broke, don't fix it! How about.... I make money for me? Go get a job hippie.

This is called Classical Liberal. A modern Liberal is more aligned with Socialism. A Classical Liberal is more aligned with a Libertarian.

For you righties,
are there any specific problems you have had (recently or otherwise) with the way news has been reported on CNN and the others in that category? It seems that your arguments for FOX are emotional and tautological (XXX is liberal trash, YYY is left so it's garbage)...

Which network was making the fuss about American Idol and Friends? (I don't have a TV but I've heard it all over the radio..)
The only stories you ever hear on CNN are gloom and doom about the United States being in a quagmire, etc etc. It's utter crap. Talk to soldiers over in Iraq, who are doing the deeds. Yes, there is resistence, but there is also a LOT of good coming out of that country that you NEVER hear about. To be fair, Foxnews is guilty of this to some degree, but they at least show SOME of the good stuff coming out of that country.

ABC News also admitted calculated bias a couple months ago (can we say Peter Jennings), CNN is guilty of leftist reporting (what's the famous reporter's name that got kicked out of Iraq, crap I can't think of it.) The list goes on.

Read "Slander" by Ann Coulter. Yes, she's a right-wing pundit. But she also backs up everything she says with hard facts. Almost everything in that book is foot or end noted. It's worth reading.

Isn't that an oxymoron?

conservative democrat...maybe

That’s probably true. It would be better to say conservative democrat.

I don’t care what any one says there really is no news source that isn’t bias. They all have their on slant on the story, and in reality it would be hard to tell the news with out it. If I find a story I want to know about (besides what is happening on the last episode of Survivor that is) I look at if from many sources, Fox, CNN, MSNBC, internet ect. Only if you look at it from all sides can you really come to a conclusion as to what is really going on.

That's very true. This is why the internet is so valuable for news. You can get viewpoints and stories that would NEVER be shown on television. Always be critical of the source, good and bad.

people who can blanketly (is that a word?) label themselves a 'righty' or a 'leftie' without weighing their thoughts on individual issues are morons. If this description fits you, then you're a moron. I'm liberal on some issues and conservative on others.

Just about every news channel out there is trash. FoxNew's only redeeming quality is the comedic value they hold. When clowns like O'Reilly or Hannity aren't busy fellating the right (if you ever think for a minute they might lean left, read excerpts from their books), their news anchors like that one guy who wears lipstick (stewart or something) are busy presenting some blown out of proportion right wing slanted report. CNN is almost as bad on the left side of things, while MSNBC, CBS, and ABC couldn't break a story if their lives depended on it. NPR is usually pretty good on the news side of things, but many things they say do have a liberal slant. If you only get your news from one source, you a bit sheltered and shouldn't be blathering on about your uneducated opinion.

Time to get out the Venn diagrams..

A implies B does not mean Not-A implies Not-B.

In other words, just because you're not a liberal (e.g. you're a conservative) does not mean you aren't all the nice things that come under the definition of liberal.

The definition was given not to say that you're bad because you're conservative, just to say it's a little silly to be throwing the word "liberal" out as an insult.

Go get some logic, fascist.

I would tend to agree on this statement. I go to a school where the majority of the people are Republicans and don’t even know why they are Republicans. All they know is that their parents are and they say democrats are bad. It can be very annoying talking to them because they know nothing about the issues all they know is what their parents tell them. I am like you where I am Liberal on some issues and conservative on others. It is highly important the people learn what they believe, any why they believe it, and not just parrot their parents. But I believe the reason people used “righty” or “lefty” is so they can give people a rough idea of where they stand on the issues without going into them.

I'm gonna throw up now. And this chick wants to join the military? And YES... in your case I say chick in the chauvanistic, male pig sense of the word. You gotta long road in front of you...

That's what I like about you aviators. You put all the resent right out on the table and don't slime it up with saccharine formalities.

I thought it was a little silly to define the word in the first place since the words usage most of the time now is as a stereotype and not literal. (ie: fly navy's earlier post) I do agree that most news from any channel usually sucks...but like everyone is saying that is entertainment. What a shame that the "gloom and doom" reporting is what pays their bills. I do think that some channels reporting on the war is so negative it seems almost like they are out to take the morale out of the troops.

Another thing...I just don't see why anybody who is in the military or going into the military would want a democrat in office. Gorpwarp have your read or heard peoples experiences going from Clinton to Bush while they were in the military? I don't want my pay cut but maybe you want to give yours away and thats your business. I'm really just curious why someone would be in your position, especially since the military ( I think) is probably largely republican.

Easy. O'Reilly's stance on guns. For the most part he's right leaning though, yes.

I like when the lefties use the term "fascist". Why that's associated with right-wing, I don't know. I also like when they use Nazi as an insult. Considering Nazi was the National Socialist Party... Oh well.
