I would be less offended by a USS William J Clinton than I am by a USS Murtha.

While having a few beers with a Marine Corps retired 3 star (and an Aviator of some note) in Old Town Alexandra a couple of years ago, the subject of Murtha came up. He said that Murtha had been stand up guy and a good Marine. He thought that the only explanation for his then current condition is that the DC in Murtha had defeated the Marine in Murtha.

Mod squad recommend closing

Just curious why there seems to always be a rush to close threads around here. I am all for it when it pertains to mishaps or other serious type event, but lately it seems like threads close faster than you can say locked especially when people are getting pissy.

Perhaps it seems that way form outside, but Mods exercise that option for a variety of reasons; one of which is accelerating Flame War. Once closed, the Mods talk about it in our private forum. Sometimes it gets reopened, sometimes not. Think of it like a control rod in a nuclear reactor.

Rep Murtha was a Marine and did a lot for the Marine Corps throughout his tenure in Congress and was considered a true ally/supporter until his public remarks on the infamous incident before Military justice had even started running its course. That caused a breach of faith. That should be no news to anyone. Had a ship been named after him while he was still alive as has been a continuing trend since naming of USS Reagan, it would have been a slap in the face of Marines. Since he has passed away, not sure that's the case. Is it politics. certainly. SECNAV is a political appointee and serves the President and deals in politics daily. Should be no surprise then.
