My dad had an old school post-WWII Lionel set. Hours of fun and many fond memories with that as a kid.

Train sets are meant for the very young, even if it's Dad who gets the most enjoyment out of them. Kinda like boobs.

When my little brother and I got our first train for Christmas in 76', my dad quickly took over and proceeded to build it into a basement consuming layout. It's a hobby for kids at heart with a bank account and a ability to keep their wives at bay. I have successfully talked myself out of it during many flirtations with it..........it just looks so fun.
